What Withey and Robinson will mean in Portland

By CamCripps3

Just hours after the NBA Free Agency period opened, the Portland Trail Blazers had already pulled the trigger with a deal involving the Houston Rockets.

The agreement saw Portland acquire Thomas Robinson in exchange for two future second-round draft picks and the right to Kostas Papanikalou and Marko Todorovic.

Portland will receive a 6'10" F who has struggled since entering the league at pick #5 in the 2012 draft. Beginning his career in a Sacramento organisation with immense on and off court problems, and a roster with many Power Forward's. The situation was not ideal for the former Kansas Jayhawk star.

After ending up in Houston mid-season as part of a multi-player deal, court time remained hard to get for Robinson who was generally left to watch from the bench. The decision to trade Robinson was part of the plan to clear cap space in Houston to ultimately chase the signature of Dwight Howard.

When Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported the deal, it meant that Robinson would be reunited with his former Jayhawk teammate Jeff Withey who was selected at pick #39 by the Blazers in last weeks draft.

The duo spent three seasons together in Kansas including the 2011-12 season where the Jayhawks reached the NCAA championship game, but eventually fell to Kentucky.

In Portland, Jeff Withey and Thomas Robinson will bring a relationship like never before. Knowing each others game inside-and-out, the chemistry between the pair could make the move work for the Blazers.

One thing you can guarantee with Thomas Robinson is his hunger out on the court. A high energy, athletic guy who works hard at both ends of the floor.

Portland could be the organisation and city where Robinson will shine and essentially put the past season behind him.

  1. What a duel this two young talent were at K-State , Obviously they came so close to winning the NCAA championship a couple years back. But hopefully they can reunite here in the Rose City and have that magic run again as team mates in a Blazer uniform. Of course Thomas Robinson has about a year experience in the league but I personally think Jeff Withey will have a sudden impact on helping the blazers right off the bat . Not taking anything away from Myers Leonard but if I'm not mistaken Myers came out of Illinois his sophmore year and Jeff was a fifth year senior at K-State so I believe Jeff should have a edge on Myers. I know Myers has had a year under his belt in the league but totally had problems figuring out the defensive schemes . Jeff led the nation in block shots this season and is a relentless rebounder not afraid to mix it up and bang in the paint just what we lacked off when JJ and La Marcus goes to the bench. So yeah I'm crossing my fingers and wishing all the luck to Jeff Withey , Thomas Robinson and the rest of The Trail Blazers . Go Blazers !!!!!

  3. @katasmarcus: They came from Kansas not K-State! I think Withey will be a solid defensive minded big.

@commontongue: Kansas have a strong roster for the upcoming season so there may be more Jayhawks in PDX in a few years
