Meyers Leonard Injury Update

As Trail Blazers fans, it’s tough to see one of our players fall to the floor and writhe in pain. We saw it earlier this season with Wesley Matthews—who is still recovering from a strained hip flexor—and unfortunately we saw it again tonight during Portland’s 89-85 defeat of the Philadelphia 76ers.

With 9:01 left in the fourth quarter, rookie center Meyers Leonard launched into the air to fight for a rebound. When he came down he landed on his right leg, which looked to  buckle at both the ankle and knee, causing him to immediately hit the deck grimacing in pain.

He was helped off the court by teammates and limped straight back to the locker room with team trainer Jay Jensen. He didn’t return to the game, but instead was examined by medical staff.

Leonard underwent X-Rays, which were negative, and he’s listed as having a right ankle sprain. He won’t travel with the team when they leave for New York tomorrow and it’s unknown when he will rejoin them. Keep in mind, it’s completely normal not to travel when you sustain an injury that causes any kind of substantial swelling.

His availability is TBD.

  1. Hey Miss Sarah: Thank you for the update on Leonard. But as I said in MB's blog a bad ankle sprain can be a serious injury. LaMarcus ankle only caused him to miss a game or two, but IMO, it effected his playing ability the first game back. Plus the fact it looked absolutely horrible on instant replay. Nevertheless, I hope he heals fast and gets back to the rotation. He is improving nicely and I hate to see injuries hinder growth. Although, again IMO, we will see more of Joel while Leonard is healing, and Joel needs the playing time also.

  2. Glad to hear it's just a sprain. Fortunately he's young and seems to take care of himself rest wise and diet wise which is unusual for a 20 year old! I hope he heals quickly and comes back stronger.

  3. Oh man... not another center injured!

    anyone else feel the same about jay jensen? like the guy, but hate hearing his name! I mean the lat couple of years we heard about him all the time and it didnt bode well for us with all the injuries. Let's hope this is just a little blip on Myers' screen.

    What the heck does Leonard turning his ankle with his full weight on it has to do with Jensen? was it because Jensen wasn't out on the floor instructing Leonard to be more careful how he jumps?
    Would you like to try to count all the players in the NBA that has turned their ankles; This problem is not related to centers or training staffs, that is just the NBA where turned ankles happen.

  5. I had the exact same thing happen to me playing ball. I felt my legbone hit the pavement. Let me tell you, it hurt. I've torn my achilles and the sprain was equally painful if not worse. I had a lisfranc injury in my midfoot and the recovery was very long. Is Leonard in a cast?

  7. @Hg - no no no total misunderstanding here! This has absolutely nothing to do with Jensen! All I meant was that whenever there's an injury, the article talks about Jensen. He didnt do anything wrong at all, just when you see his name, it means there was an injury, and that bums me out!

  8. @Hg and you're definitely right about turned ankles. I remember when we had rubberankles (andre miller) that was very cool to see those turned ankles not affect him at all, but anyone else, you can expect some time off.
