Haynes: Damian Lillard 'I Think I Can Be An MVP'

Damian Lillard is having quite the rookie year to remember. Not only is Lillard leading all rookies in points (19), assists (6.5), field-goals made (6.7), 3-PT field goals made (2.3), free-throw percentage (85.2%), and minutes (38.5) on a per-game basis, but it feels like the sixth pick out of Weber State is reeling off achievements left and right, becoming the first to do this or that on a nightly basis. And Monday's game against Utah was no different. In the first quarter against the Jazz, Dame spotted up from downtown and cashed in on his 167th made 3-pointer of the season to break Steph Curry's rookie 3-point record. Yet with all of these accomplishments and accolades pouring in, the level-headed rook still isn't satisfied.

“I think I can be a first team All-NBA, I think I can be an All-Star, I think I can be an MVP,” Lillard told CSNNW.com. “That's just my opinion. I don't know when, but how I plan to work and how much better I want to be, I feel like anything is possible.”

“I'm not saying I deserve those things right now. That's not what I'm saying. What I am saying is that I set high standards for myself,” he said. “I'm not going to come out and try to force myself to be an MVP next season, I'm going to be myself and hopefully all the hard work that I put in will get me to that point. I can get a lot better.”

While postseason play might not be in the cards for the young Trail Blazers this spring, optimism is in the air. The elusive "Point Guard of the Future" the Rose City was so desperately seeking has arrived, he's exceeding all expectations, and he's willing to put in the hard work that it takes to become great. When your floor general exudes that mentality, it's hard not to get excited about the next decade of Trail Blazers basketball with Damian Lillard leading the charge.

"They say the truth shall come to the light, so everybody grab ya shades cuz ya boy that bright." That Jay-Z lyric is posted in the bio of both Lillard's Instagram and Twitter profiles.

  1. By the time Damien reaches the end of his contract year he will be 1 of the top 5 PG's in the league, if not sooner. If Mr Allen opens up his wallet to keep Damien in Portland the team will win a championship(s)with Damien Lillard running the show. As long as his body holds up. Mr. Lillard and Mr Leonard will anchor this team for years to come.
