Veteran BlazerDancer Greta
is returning to the court for a second season!
Portland born and raised, Greta started her dancing career learning ballet at three years old. Though ballet was her first class, she doesn’t credit her early years with developing her love of dance or her technique, “I wore a tutu and that’s about as ballet as it got,” she said. Instead she insists her true start was in 7th grade when she took tap and jazz classes.
Greta continued dancing through high school as a member of the Lincoln High School Dance Team—it was there she met the dancer who would influence her the most, her coach. “When I was in high school my coach was actually a current BlazerDancer and she really inspired me. She was working like three jobs then, she was my coach, she was working at another job and she was a BlazerDancer,” Greta said. “She definitely inspired me to keep dancing and the prospect that I might make it. So I think she was the one, and having her in my life, that really did that for me. I’m thankful for that.”
From there she moved to Eugene and spent a year on the University of Oregon Dance Team before moving on to the world of professional dancing. Greta spent three seasons performing with the Vancouver Volcanoes and during two of those years she also danced with the Winterhawks Rosebuds before joining the BlazerDancers last season.
Greta spent her whirlwind rookie season learning the ropes and soaking up every moment. “My favorite experience by far was FanFest. I just couldn’t get enough of the crowd, I couldn’t get enough of the energy and the whole environment,” she said. “I had the most fun that night, even though it was just us scrimmaging against each other.”
This year, as a veteran on a team with six rookies, she’s in a position to pass on her knowledge to the new girls just as she does in her classroom as an 8th grade Earth and space science teacher.
“What people told me when I joined the team is to take advantage of everything, because it goes by so quickly and it’s so much fun,” she said. “It’s a job, but you have to remember to enjoy it all. Live for the moment.”
