Meet BlazerDancer Rea

By sarahhecht Posted in: blazerdancers, Rea

Veteran BlazerDancer Rea is back to rock the Rose Garden for another season!

Bitten by the dancing bug at the young age of five, it was only four short years later when she joined her first company specializing in jazz. She added two more companies to her resume in her formative years and was training and performing locally in ballet, tap, jazz and modern styles.

An Oregon native and Hillsboro High School alum, Rea’s teenage years consisted of school and dance—a rigorous schedule that would payoff in the long-run and afford her the opportunity to turn her passion for dance into a career as a dancer and teacher.

Following graduation Rea auditioned for a job performing in the happiest place on Earth, Disneyland, and spent two years in Los Angeles perfecting her skills as a pro. “I mean it was Disneyland,” she said. “So it was pretty cool. We got into the park for free and we got to play around whenever we wanted to.”

Rea’s dancing career has been littered with highlight reel moments. In addition to dancing at Disneyland she traveled with a performing group of 20 dancers to the Sydney Olympics to entertain those attending the games.

“I traveled to the 2000 Sydney Olympics with them [one of her companies,] it was awesome!” Rea said. “It was really fun and just a very cool experience. We were performing not within the Olympics, but they had different entertainment groups going on at different venues surrounding the Olympic area. We were down there for almost two weeks and did five or six different performances all over the place.”

As a veteran, BlazerDancer Rea has added to her dance portfolio representing the Trail Blazers for six seasons and now, heading into her seventh year, says she still gets nervous and anxious while standing in the tunnel waiting to head onto the floor to put on a show for the Rose Garden crowd.

With six seasons worth of memories to choose from Rea’s favorite moment as a BlazerDancer doesn’t come from the court, but instead when she acted as an ambassador for the BlazerDancers and the team at a Habitat For Humanity build last year.

“That’s a really standout experience for me because I love to do volunteer work and I love even more that I can do it with the BlazerDancer name attached to it. I get such a sense of fulfillment from it and then on the flip side people are like ‘Oh, this is so cool, a BlazerDancer helped build my house,’” Rea said. “I think people really appreciate seeing and hearing about us in the community and I love helping to build that reputation for the organization and the dance team specifically. It was so much fun, I know nothing about framing in the slightest, but I know a smidge about it now and I know how sore I was the next day from raising a hammer for hours on end, but that was an amazing experience for me and I was working side by side with the people that were going to be living in the house and that made it even more special.”
