Brandon Roy's new Contract.

It is my understanding that under the amnesty rules if an amnestied player signs with a new team then the contract is deducted from the amount owed by the players previous team as just happened with Elton Brand going to the Mavs from the 76ers and his new 2.1 million contract being deducted from his 18.1 million owed by the 76ers. If this is true then we should look to use this financial windfall to sign a player amnestied by another team over the next several days. I also wonder that since Roy is back in the NBA do we still have to wait on our amnesty rights till his old contract expires? Do you have any ideas on possible players to be amnestied in the near future?

  1. Not quite. If a player is amnestied and then picked up off waivers there is a high amount of contract relief. Because Brandon fully cleared the waiver process we wouldn't get that large relief if he signs with Minny. We would however get partial relief depending on the amount of the contract he signs, but definitely not a "windfall" by any means.
