Batum - Olshey "we will match, no sign&trade"

By Blazer Fanatic Posted in: NicolasBatum
Blazers GM Olshey, Chad Buchanan and salary cap specialist Joe Cronin finished a meeting with Batum and his agent in downtown Portland.  Olshey called the meeting, "constructive". "We told Nic it is in his best interests to sign with us." Olshey told both Nic and his agent that they will match any offer, and will not engage in a sign-and-trade. This information coming from @jwquick via twitter.

I had a very good feeling that this would be the case given:

- Minn has not offered a verbal agreement

- Nic's agent has been extremely vocal and disparaging toward any notion of Nic being a Blazer next year

- Despite Nic's agent saying he would meet every team in the NBA first, jump on the first offer, and not meet with Portland or allow the Blazers to speak to Nick, he only met with Minn, and met with Portland face-to-face second.

- Dwight Jaynes artical saying that Nic said, "(he) never wants to play in Portland again" and Nic's reply "Trust me - I didn't."

Nic's agent is Busch League, (to say nothing of Jaynes reporting on heresay drama). I expect agents to get their players as much money as possible. I do not expect them to burn bridges with a loyal fan base, and an organization that is intent on retaining the agent's asset.

Nic will be a Blazer next year, and I only hope we can get Hibbert.

  1. I'd like to know the "source" that said Batum was unhappy in Portland.

  2. Wouldn't we all. Some argue, that without attributing information to "source", that we wouldn't get much of the information out there. I disagree. I will take accuracy and fact over speculation and rumor any day. What's worse, the "source" information provided by Jaynes regarding Batum is irrelivant, which makes reporting on it even more rediculous. In an ironic twist, it was a named source which refuted the non-sense of Nic never wanting to play for Portland again.

  3. Great news I am PRO BATUM!!

Dwight Jaynes once again proves what an amateur he is... never makes an assessment from solid sources, he thinks he is the source haah the show is unwatchable and im a basketball junkie

  4. @jwquick confirmed that Jaynes source is credible. The question is, what's the point? I dove back into my childhood for answers. I once told my parents that I hated them. We were fighting over how late I could stay out. Long story short, I love my parents. Is this news?

  5. Is it possible that Jaynes source is Donnie Walsh? :D

  6. Also like to add that I'm glad Nico is a Blazer and feel we're a better team going forward with him than without him...now let's get Patty Mills and reunite these two friends while propping up our pt guard rotation. Patty has grown substantially since he was last a Blazer. Olshey's mantra is mine, people who want to be here long term....gotta love it!

  7. Did Batum say he never wants to play in Portland again? History check (Feb 2011):
"We know that Derrick Rose is a good offensive player," Batum said, according to the paper. "But you have to play defense, too. He can't guard Dre. You gotta play defense. He can't play defense, so that's why we put Dre inside and try to attack him. He did a great job. Had [27 points] and 11 [assists] tonight."
By Tuesday afternoon, Batum took to Twitter to refute the criticism: "I'm sorry for the D.Rose fans and bulls fans, but I never said that he can't play defense, NEVER...trust me," he tweeted.
Rose smiled when asked about Batum's comments before Tuesday's practice in Salt Lake City.
"Oh man, he threw me under the bus, didn't he?" Rose said. "But no, man. Everybody's got their opinion, but I know I can play defense, man. So it is what it is.

He's a 23 year old kid. They say stuff. Next.

  8. Here's a crazy thought, could just b PURE fantasy but... I know Olshey "says" matchin' anything & no sign & trades; Olshey ALSO said we're doin' things to "move the needle;" IF he REALLY wants to do this, howz 'bout trying for Dork Nit-wit-ski? Things got dark in Dallas FAST! Does Dirk wanna hang around for that? I don't think so. Dirk's still got some good ball left in him. In 2010, he signed on for 4yrs @ $80mill; this means, present day, he's got 2yrs $40mill left; well... isn't this ~ the $ of what Nico is askin' for ($45-50 for 4yrs)? Dunno if Cuban would wanna make a deal w/ us but... Nico could spread his wings in Dal. & Cuban would have a good building block in Nico. For the deal to get done, to make up the remainder, most likely we'd need a 3rd team (can give up some players to make Cuban wanna deal bc he's in rebuilding now & all NBA teams wanna do it as fast as possible) & get back a trade exception (bc again he's in rebuilding so he wants to try to get/keep draft picks) or something. I'm not to sure about all this, what do u guys think? Is this possible? ps I know Dirk's a F BUT he plays like a 3 so we can go HUGE w/ having him, LMA, & whatever 5 we pick up! IMAGINE! :)

  9. Correct me if I'm wrong but... w/ Tor. trading for Lowry... doesn't that mean that Tor. is going to amnesty Calderon? Even if we didn't get him & somebody else did... of the pg's that ARE left, we can get them more easily bc of the teams that needed a major pg, there's now 1 less team (not that many already ;) to fight w/. :) Like some of us have been saying, the options r looking gggggoood for our Blazers ;)

  10. Dirk's remaining 2 years are between 43-44 million. Dirk would be as difficult if not more so to get than any team trying to get LA as a Restricted Free Agent. And why are we selling the farm for a PF when our one untouchable, All-Star, franchize player is a PF? Dirk is not fast enough to defend SFs. Dirk is not an option for the Blazers... ever.

IF the Raptors amnesty Calderon, he will go to waivers. It's like a silent auction. Whoever bids the most, get him. Not the most exciting or Blazer relivant news, but news more so than D. Jaynes posting that Batum "never wants to play in Portland again."

  11. @ Blazer Fanatic, thx 4 the clarity :)

Dunno if what Batum said is really true or not but I say if Nico's gonna get $ anywhere near ~$12.5/yr., we gotta do a sign & trade (simply to pay him to just stay for that is too much); if we don't like the offers now, then we wait till L8r in the season when the offers get better (hopefully phi/min/ind flinch & give us a 2-3 team offer we can't refuse! ;)
