Oregonian Begins ‘You Be The GM’ Series With Jamal Crawford And Luke Babbitt

I always find it interesting to see what decisions fans would make for the Trail Blazers franchise if they held the role of general manager. Luckily, we have an educated and vocal fan base in Portland and I don’t have to search very far. Opinions and ideas about the roster abound on Twitter, the team Facebook and the live chats. But even with all those outlets I still adore the “You Be The GM” series run by The Oregonian during the summers.

They break down stats and contributions of each player, allow readers to vote for the guy to stay or go and leave comments defending their selections.

Also included is a panel of local writers who join the mix and give their opinions. This year Joe Freeman and Jason Quick of The Oregonian, Matt Calkins of The Columbian, Ben Golliver of Blazersedge and Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus form the panel.

The series began yesterday with shooting guard Jamal Crawford on the block.

Freeman: “Crawford had some big scoring nights, but was mostly inconsistent during his lone season in Portland and even he would acknowledge he had a disappointing season. Crawford will be a sought-after free agent, but the Blazers will not be among his suitors.”

Today small forward Luke Babbitt is on the line.

Pelton: “What Luke Babbitt proved over the last two months of the season is that he has an NBA skill in terms of his ability to shoot the three-pointer, which was up for debate during his limited action over his first year and a half in the league.”

 What do you think of the voting results for Crawford and Babbitt? What about the opinions of the panelists?? Are the assessments fair?

    I already voted for Jamal Crawford to go, because of political reasons LOL. He is more of a politician then a BB player, he says one thing and does another. Just his, IMO, selfish hypocritical ways undermines the rest of the team.

    I voted to keep Babbitt, because he showed great promise and we don't know for sure what is ceiling is because of the lack of play. I don't know if he will always be a bench player a sixth man or a starter, but I think what he brings as a role player could be very important to the Blazers

  2. Babbit is way more than a mere 3 point specialist. He has great offensive game in him. He didn't become the MWC player of the year just by shooting threes. He loves to penetrate, and has a decent post game as well. The team must look to find the best use for him and unveil his potential. Turning a 1st rounder into a bench warmer without even playing him was a huge mistake and an insult to Babbit

  3. Definitely could have been a little more said about Babbitt than his 3 point shooting. We only got a hint of what Babbitt can do. I'd vote to keep Babbitt no matter what they had said. He deserves a real chance.

  4. LOVE this series they do as well Sarah. It is fascinating to see how fans feel. It is even more interesting to see how often the fans and management make the same decisions. Kinda dreading when Wesley comes up though, I know the fanbase is unhappy with his play this last season :( Lol

  5. Hey Miss Sarah: I don't know if you are planning on updating You Be The GM or not, but today it was Craig Smith. I love Craig's game, but I think the addition of JJ will take most of Craig's value away, so I voted to let him go for future play, because he is too good to sit on the bench with DNP Cd's

  8. Miss Sarah, I have voted to keep Jonny Flynn because we need depth and he is serviceable
    I just voted to keep Joel Przybilla for all the reason's you and I could think of.

  9. Get rid of Jamal. Nothing against him as a person but on the court he is a selfish player. He just has an attitude about him that the blazers locker room doesn't need. We should for sure keep Luke. He is by far one of the most talent enrich players we have. If they give him some more minutes and let him go to work with ball like they did with Roy we could be in for a big surprise. He is a star waiting to bust out.
