Training Camp Weekend Roundup

By sarahhecht Posted in: WesleyMatthews, WesleyMatthews
The Trail Blazers practice facility was a busy place over the weekend. Days two and three of training camp saw the squad hustling to get in shape. On Saturday, four new faces— Marshall Brown, Jeff Foote, Ben McCauley and Seth Tarver— joined the training camp squad in hopes of landing a more permanent position on the roster.

As practice came to an end on Saturday, Casey Holdahl got a solid 15 minutes of 5-on-5 scrimmaging on video. In the rotation you can see the black team, composed of starters, is Raymond Felton, Wesley Matthews, Nicolas Batum, Gerald Wallace and Marcus Camby. Though this rotation will most certainly change a bit when LaMarcus Aldridge returns. Even with the eventual change you don’t want to miss this video, we don’t often get the chance to see live scrimmaging during practice.

That same day a drenched in sweat Wesley Matthews addressed the media on a variety of topics: Rookie Nolan Smith is learning quickly, the team is maintaining focus after a tumultuous first day of camp and Felton is ready to go now. As for his own game, Matthews said he’s adjusting to being ready for new point guard Felton’s passing style, he’s ready to increase his role and he worked all summer to improve and earn as many minutes on the floor as possible.

On Sunday, head coach Nate McMillan and the team divided the practice section into two parts. Half of the three-hour session was spent working on the offensive system and half on the defensive scheme. Though we didn’t catch any live scrimmaging we did see the team split into focus groups. Camby, Felton, Batum, Matthews and Wallace used the last 15 minutes of the practice session to put up some shots from behind the arc while the rest of the guys dissected video of practice.

The last bit of big news on Sunday came with the signing of center Kurt Thomas to a two-year contract.

  1. Hey Miss Sarah;
    first glad to hear from you so early in the morning.
    second, I would imagine you have read many Blazer blogs and have read that I put in a word for BRoy being a side-line reporter, I want to let you know that I am not being fickle, You would make a great side-line reporter, but I was being selfish. I would gets to keep you keeping me informed and get to see BRoy at the same time. In reality, I don't know if BRoy would make a good reporter or not. I do hope he becomes a part of the Blazer management or media.

    Now, on to the week end training.

    It was great to see the scrimmages, It is hard for me to pick out the players as individuals, but I look for the passing and teamwork any way. Otherwise, I don't care who takes the final shot as I do about the team work that gets it there.

    Thank you for the blog, I am most definitely interest in what Thomas brings and future help.
