Meet The BlazerDancers: JennaLea

By sarahhecht Posted in: blazerdancers, Jennalea

Bringing joy to the lives of others through dance has been a priority for rookie BlazerDancer JennaLea for as long as she can remember. As she puts it, “the body says what words cannot.”

Dancing with the Body And Soul Creative Dance studio in Gresham was the beginning for JennaLea. When she was eight years old she trained in jazz, tap and hip-hop and got her first taste of sharing her passion for movement and the way it evokes responses in her audiences—and it keeps her going now.

“Being able to see the people I’ve reached out to during dances that’ll come up if the dance affected them or touched them in some way,” JennaLea said. “Seeing the effect it has on others and how much they appreciate what you do. I do it for others as well as a release for myself.”

JennaLea had her first experience with the Trail Blazers organization in 2001 as a member of the Junior Blazer Dancers. She performed at ten games a year for three seasons. Just enough time to get a true taste of the excitement being a BlazerDancer brings.

With JBD experience under her belt JennaLea set out on new adventures with Empurean Movement—a dance company created by former Junior Blazer Dancer directors. She performed from Nike to Times Square and everywhere in between, all the while assisting the directors in workshops and classes.

After a brief stint teaching at a studio, JennaLea took some time off to start pursuing her degree in child and family studies. But it wasn’t long before she felt the pull to return to dance.

To fulfill herself and bring the power of dance to those around her she began dancing for the Vancouver Volcanoes. A season later she auditioned for the BlazerDancers and following a long week of auditions her face was displayed on the jumbotron as a member of the 2011-2012 squad.

“I’m looking forward to cherishing every moment,” JennaLea said of her future as a BlazerDancer. “Being able to not only be with a group of girls that share the same love and talent and passion for something, but being able to see the affect it has on those around.”
