Trail Blazers and Cow Creek make it better at the Umpqua Valley Boys & Girls Club

By make it better

The Portland Trail Blazers make it better team was far from home on Tuesday night when we arrived in Canyonville. We were warmly welcomed at the Seven Feathers Casino, a Trail Blazers sponsor and longtime partner in our make it better community endeavors. We woke the next morning and continued on to Roseburg to have breakfast at the headquarters of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, whom we partner with to run one of our favorite clinics each year.

Today's clinic was held at the Umpqua Valley Boys & Girls Club in Roseburg and numbered in more than 75 youngsters in attendance. The facility and courts were the perfect size for this camp, with the weather cool enough in the morning to hold half of the drills on the outdoor courts. If you've never been to this part of the state, it's visually incredible, especially in the summer.

The campers were energized by Bobby Medina and crew, going through a number of drills, exercises and competitions throughout the two-hour session. Blaze the Trail Cat made an appearance, and the crew was joined by ambassador Dale Schlueter.

It's never surprising when you meet so many Trail Blazers fans outside of Portland, but there are always interactions that make you stop and think about what the team means to its youngest followers. A parent came up to us and thanked us for coming down, but went on to explain that this camp was the highlight of his son's summer. Makes you stop and think about the power sports can have to affect a young person's life, and we're really lucky to be a part of a team that fosters that connection.
