Trail Blazers, Kia Tip Off Summer Fun with Police Activities League
By make it better
The Trail Blazers tipped off the 2011 Statewide Summer Tour, presented by Kia Motors, on the first Thursday in July at the Police Activities League Gym in northeast Portland. More than 50 eager young hoopers learned Blazers basketball from the make it better hoops coaches, led by Todd Bosma. Todd and the crew got the campers ready with a series of loosening exercises before bringing out the basketballs. Starting with drills designed to teach proper dribbling fundamentals, the kids then learned the fundamentals of shooting, passing, and lay-ups.
Just before the dribbling stopped, though, Trail Blazers Ambassador Chris Dudley stopped by the camp to teach the kids some of what he learned during his 16 year NBA career. After a quick water break, Chris shared some stories from his playing days. He also let them in on the secret to success on the basketball floor and off: Hard work. After answering about a million questions (yes, he can still dunk), the kids got back to work. Blaze visited the gym, too, and did what he does best—spreading smiles and fun to all around him.
The clinic ended with some very competitive games of Knock Out. It was clear that the kids had listened and learned at the clinic because there were a lot more made shots than missed ones. Before the campers left, they each picked up some goodies provided by Burgerville. It was a great start to the 4th Summer Tour. Although we are sure that even better times are ahead.
