A Dancer's Draft Day Workout

By Veronica
No spot on The Blazers Dancers roster is guaranteed. They audition to fill 16 spots each year so returning veterans don't just skate back on to the team. I'm working to earn my spot along with all the other hopeful auditioners come the weekend of July 9th. Even though veterans get a "pass" into the final round of auditions, come the day of finals we all start at square one. As returners we will be judged not only on our audition day performance but also on our past year with the team.

I like to consider the audition process to be like a draft day workout for a prospective team. All the years of dance training and performance have prepared me for this task both mentally and physically. All the summer workouts, technique classes, and hours of Bikram yoga are all in preparation for this one day to shine in front of the coach and a panel of judges. I remember my rookie year audition and it was tough! Close to 16 hours of dancing that weekend had me limping out of the gym on Day2. Mentally I was spent having learned 7 routines in such a short period of time (4 on Day1, and 3 on Day2). That lead into a week of practicing, interviews and then the final audition day which was our last opportunity to leave it all on the dance floor. That night I could barely sleep for wanting to make this team and it was a blessing I was selected as one of the Sweet Sixteen in July of 2009.

This will hopefully be my 3rd season as a Blazers Dancer and now two years later I am even more passionate about making this team knowing what amazing experiences the season holds.

Wish me luck!!

  1. thanks Veronica. i had always wondered how and why veterans don't get first shot at returning, and you answered that question. glad you get a pass into the finals. it's got to be rough, like you said, to go through a draft workout annually. i'm definitely pulling for you!
