Rondo, Felton and Nelson Oh My!
By sarahhecht Posted in: draft2011
Winning the Powerball jackpot. We’ve all had that dream. Entertaining ourselves with grandiose plans of how to spend the oodles of dough that’ll overflow our bank accounts after we hit the $300 million big one. It’s fun to dream, right? Of course it is.
The NBA equivalent of jackpot dreams are the amped up trade talks leading up to the draft. In our minds the player wish-lists grow and we start to really consider how we can make a long-shot trade a reality.
Then, draft day arrives and all the nervous what-ifs really start to hum and buzz. We scour the web for any hint at confirmation of speculated trades and any leaks of pick selections. Then David Stern walks up to the podium. Your stomach gets twisted... In an instant you’re hit with a wave of emotion and reaction over the pick. And with barely a moment to take it all in your mind is back to the trade rumors and thinking about the next selections. The energy filled night rolls on and the rumors seem to gain more legitimacy until finally a trade is confirmed.
With the 2011 emotional roller coaster behind us, it might be fun to mull over all the rumors we heard last night. Here’s a few of the possibilities I heard flying around:
Andre Miller for Raymond Felton:
Of course this swap eventually occurred and included Rudy Fernandez, Jordan Hamilton and Tanguy Ngombo, but as the rumors flew I heard multiple permutations. We were swapping picks with Denver. We were keeping Jordan Hamilton. The 57th pick was going to Minnesota... all sorts. This rumor was all over the place but I really started to take notice when Marc Spears, @SpearsNBAYahoo
, of Yahoo! Sports tweeted that it was close to a done deal.
Andre Miller for Jameer Nelson:
This one was earlier in the day and all the rumors I saw indicated a straight swap of the two. I saw this one on the Draft Express Twitter account, @draftexpress
Rondo for ?:
Oh Rondo... The rumors I heard surrounding this one we’re more on the pipe-dream side if anything. From a swap of Nicolas Batum and Greg Oden to a three-team deal with other unknown players, this idea had countless variations. This one hit me out of the blue when Mike Barrett and company brought it up on Courtside, but I have to say, Rondo is a nice dream.
Those were the big three I saw as the night progressed. What did you hear? Any variations on these, or something new all together? What about wish-lists?
