Trail Blazers Employees Support Playworks, Take Home the Gold at 2nd Annual Corporate Kickball Tournament
By make it better
Last Friday, a team of Trail Blazers employees entered the second annual Playworks Corporate Kickball Tournament at PCC Rock Creek. Spending the second half of a Friday in 75 degree weather wasn’t the only thing to get excited about. Taking home the title in a field of 10 Portland-metro companies wasn’t either. Knowing that your participation supports nearly 6,000 kids in Portland Public schools was what made it all worth it.
Playworks’ mission is to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play. Their fundraising kickball tournament helped over 100 adults have their own safe, meaningful play for one afternoon.
Corporate teams from Nike, Columbia Sportswear, Kaiser Permanente, Legacy Children’s Hospital, Symantec, Portland Public Schools, Kohl’s, Interworks LLC, the University of Portland and the Trail Blazers competed for four hours on four makeshift fields on the beautiful campus of PCC Rock Creek.
After going 2-0 in round robin play, the Trail Blazers found themselves as the #3 seed as they entered the single elimination tournament. The team squeaked out a 6-2 win over Columbia Sportswear in the semi-finals before cruising past the Portland Public Schools principals 16-2 in the finals.
Throughout the day, teams were given pseudo “spirit points” for encouraging teammates or opponents, coinciding with Playworks’ commitment to teach kids about inclusion, respect, healthy play and community; social foundations that Playworks believes will create positive citizens and leaders.
While it gives an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction and warmth to know that your participation supports such an important and valuable cause, it didn’t hurt to leave with the championship trophy, either.
