TRAIL BLAZERS, WINDERMERE CAP OFF RESTORATION OF BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB WITH COMMUNITY CELEBRATION

By make it better

On a sunny day in mid-June, make it better employee volunteers teamed up with Windermere staff to spend the morning at the Trail Blazers Boys & Girls Club getting the facility ready for a flurry of activity as the club staff prepares to host nearly 1,500 club members over the summer months.   The volunteer efforts were a part of a day-long community celebration hosted by Windermere Real Estate, the make it better foundation, and the Trail Blazers celebrating the completion of facility upgrades which included a “Blazerized” facelift to the lobby and soundproofing in the gymnasium.

Trail Blazers, Windermere and Boys & Girls Clubs executives and volunteers were joined by alumni Jerome Kersey and Terry Porter, along with president emeritus Harry Glickman, in celebrating the completion of the project. The celebration included carnival games, cotton candy and a brief program recognizing the importance of the Boys & Girls Clubs in our community.

“If you take into account every Boys and Girls Club site in the metro area, over 25,000 youth were served by this fantastic organization last year,” said Sarah Mensah, Trail Blazers chief operating officer. “What a wonderful impact we would have on the youth of Portland if the leaders in our community joined the Trail Blazers and Windermere in rallying around organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs that provide these opportunities for our youth.”

The club is one of several clubs in the Greater Portland Metro Area that contributes to the more than 25,000 youth served annually. Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland offer programs that focus on promoting Healthy Life Styles, Good Character and Citizenship and Academic Success.  Through these programs, kids and teens have the opportunity to take part in everything from homework assistance, intensive literacy intervention, fine arts and photography programs, healthy life style programs focusing on both nutrition and good decision making and sports programs to name just a few.  Clubs also provide late night activities for teens, a crucial service at a time when violence is on the rise in our community.

The revamping of the Trail Blazers Boys and Girls Club is part of a concentrated effort by the Trail Blazers, the make it better foundation and Windermere to support an organization that provides local youth with a safe location to engage in positive and productive activities when they are not in school. Windermere partners Denali Oregon, Christenson Electric, En Pointe Technologies and Integra also participated in restoring the Boys & Girls Club facilities.
