Offseason Trades, Are They Likely?

I'm a big fan of Dave over at blazersedge.com. Someone once told me that he meditates over the Trail Blazers while staring out over a lake in Idaho. Now, I'm not sure if that's 100 percent fact, or embellished, but some of the work he puts out makes me believe there's at least a slice of truth there.

A few days ago Dave went into zen mode to analyze the likelihood of trading for each member of the team. In his piece, Portland Trail Blazers Roster: Who's Staying, Who's Going? his meditations resulted in this ranking:

So...ranking the team from most to least likely to be moved you get (roughly)

1. Rudy Fernandez
2. The lowest-tier players if included for salary reasons
3. The expiring contract veterans Marcus Camby and Andre Miller
4. A guy both sides could be interested in moving: Nicolas Batum
5. Greg Oden
6. The nice-priced performers: Wesley Matthews and Gerald Wallace (One would assume Coach McMillan would be adamantly against these deals.)
7. The guy nobody will take: Brandon Roy. And the guy the Blazers won't lose: LaMarcus Aldridge

Though I may not agree with all of the individual evaluations I think he's got a good overall picture of offseason movement, or the potential lack there of.

What do you think? Do you agree with Dave's assessments or is too much up in the air with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement to make trade predictions?

I am a study reader of Dave at BE. I agree mostly with what he says. I have been having quite a discussion about BRoy, and Rudy, BRoy with the opinions of amnesty and Rudy on what happened to him.

I think we have to wait to see what BRoy can become, what Greg can do, and what draft pick we get.

I don't think we should trade Dre or Camby because they are too valuable.

Of course the new Rumor that Canzano put out about the Brass wanting to retire BRoy is top billing over there now.

Do you suppose Rudy needs glasses or contact while he is playing. I just don't know what to think about his continues slump.

@Hg: Yeah, I've seen those rumors. I think it's WAY too soon to start the amnesty conversation. I'll cross that bridge if it's included in the new CBA. Until then, I'm not going there.

@Herr: Man oh man. I don't understand your Nate hate. I know you're not his biggest fan, but do you honestly think he's the most likely to be moved? Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not,) but didn't he just sign a contract extension? He's one of the most highly respected coaches in the league. I don't think he's going anywhere.

Some how need to get a young athletic point guard. Would take Batum to get into the top 5 in the draft to get Brandon Knight possibly. Trading Dre and others to Denver for probably Felton would be acceptable to me too.

Hg: Cazano is even dumber than Quick over there. i personally don't put much merit in what either say. i think ultimately, it will be Brandon's decision, and i think it's obvious he would return.

Sarah: i think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head with your list. i think we will make a couple of deals, but whatever trades we make, i just hope that we don't trade simply for the sake of trading. i'd add a couple of points to expand on yours: 1. last season, Nicolas was considered a "keeper" but, with the addition of Crash, Nico might be someone who would be considered moveable. prior to the trade deadline, Marcus indicated he would rather retire than be traded; i don't think he'd be attractive to another team were that to happen. Dre probably has about three more effective years in him; just look at Jason Kidd right now (who is three years older).

Herr: like Sarah, i fail to understand your hatred for Nate. the truth of the matter is that he's not going anywhere. as Sarah mentioned, Nate just signed a two-year contract extension about a month before the regular season ended. that fact alone should be a loud indication he will be returning as coach next season. sure you may not want him back, but it seems futile too keep calling for his head on a platter when it just plain isn't going to happen.

theworm23: i have the sneaking suspicion we will be looking for a guard in the draft. however, much more importance should be emphasized on quality depth on the front line. that's the real thing we've been lacking the past two seasons.

Rudy, Marcus, Andre, Batum and Roy......... all gone by next season.... Batum after signing a big contract.

I think there will be movement this offseason just like there is every other one. Just like Nate said, we need to balance the roster out. Too many wings, not enough bigs. We still need that one, reliable backup point guard. A guy to give LA some rest is on the priority list of to-dos as well. And we must find a scorer off the bench. I think the draft will be a good indicator of how active we'll be in the summer, so keep an eye on for June 23rd and see what goes down.
