Defending Dirk

By Roland
Dirk is the straw that stirs the drink for the Dallas Mavericks, and as he goes so does Dallas. The Mavericks whole success is predicated on his play (the Jet in the 4th quarter). If we can stop Dirk, we stop Dallas. The Blazers should employ a Thibodeau defensive strategy in the upcoming games - stop Dirk and make everyone else beat you. Easier said then done so here's how we do it.

1. Double team Dirk and leave Kidd, Stevenson and Marion open. These players are not high % shooters from deep.

2. When Matthews, Batum or GW (smaller players) guard Dirk, they should first deny him the ball, and we should front him and make Dallas beat us with a high-low offense. We need to pressure their perimeter passers from a clean entry pass and make Chandler or Haywood beat us with their passing or the high post jumper.

3. On the Dirk and Terry/Kidd/Barerra pick and roll we should continue to switch then have the man picking Dirk up pressure him forcing him to put the ball on the floor and have the rest of the team play a box 1 defense.

4. In crunch time put LA on Dirk and have GW or Batum pick up Chandler or Haywood.

What do you think we should do?

  1. Play man to man on Dirk and cover the three point line. have our centers foul Dirk hard 15 times a game.

  2. That's 30 points a game and puts us in the penalty early. Please come up with a plausible plan.
