Playoff Picture: March 29th

Last night was interesting.

In what should have been a blow-out on paper, the Trail Blazers narrowly escaped from San Antonio with a win. The Spurs chose to sit two of their main players, Parker and McDyess, with “injuries” that popped up at the last second.

There was some speculation their main contributors were sitting because the Spurs didn’t mind a Portland win. They simply don’t want us in the 8th seed to face them in the first round of the playoffs.

That’s flattering.

The victory last night made Portland the only team in the NBA to win a season series over San Antonio. Not a bad stat, not a bad stat at all.

Last night's scores and effects:

The  Portland Trail Blazers won the season series with a win over the  San Antonio Spurs 100-92 in San Antonio. The Trail Blazers became the first team to win a series over the Spurs this season with their victory. The win widened the gap between Portland in 6th and New Orleans in 7th to one full game. San Antonio remains in 1st place in the Western Conference.

The  Washington Wizards stunned the  Utah Jazz 100-95 in Utah. The Jazz haven’t officially been eliminated from playoff contention yet, but they’re pretty close. Their loss leaves them five and a half games behind Memphis in 8th. They remain in 11th in the West.

Tonight’s games with Western Conference potential playoff teams:

Houston Rockets (38-35) vs.  New Jersey Nets (23-49)
The Rockets need a win to continue their push to the post season. They currently sit two and a half games behind Memphis in 8th. A win would narrow that gap to just two full games.

Golden State Warriors (32-42) vs.  Oklahoma City Thunder (48-24)
Oklahoma City has already clinched a playoff berth and currently sit in 4th in the Western Conference. A win or a loss will keep them in the same seed. Golden State had been eliminated from playoff contention.

Phoenix Suns (36-36-) vs.  Sacramento Kings (20-52)
The Suns desperately need a win to keep themselves in the race for a playoff spot. They currently sit in 10th in the West and are four full games out of the post-season. A win tonight would narrow the gap between them and Memphis in the 8th seed.

Here are the playoff match-ups as of today:

  1. So we need a win over the hornets on Wednesday to push them back another game and keep up in 6th :) I was very happy to have squeaked out that win last night - Andre point leader! Great team work in the 4th to get us the W :)
and as always.... It's a great day to be a Blazer!

  2. No one wants to face the Blazers in the first round because one and done is a disappointing way to end a great season. ROLL ON BLAZERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Popovich may be very annoying as an opposing coach but he is not stupid! He knows the Blazers are rolling and his team does not match up well with them with their big fella on the bench. Roll Blazers!

  4. Morning Miss Sarah:

There is also no guarantee that SAS won't drop to second place with the injury to Duncan and Ginobili. So beating us would also put us closer to seventh with the same implications.

For what-ever the reason's, as Mike and Nate said, it set up a trap game and regardless of the players it was still the same system that we had to beat and they are a good team from top to bottom, much like Portland. We have played many good games with key players out or injured so why wouldn't SAS.

I am just glad we got the win. Although that really sets up tomorrow nights game against NOH. I think we will win the game, only because NOH lost West, but realizing they are still a team to beat next on our schedule, we have to play our A game. So this becomes a very important game. A win would give us the tie breaker and 2 games ahead of the Hornets. a loss would give them a tie breaker and put us tied with them, plus the magic number is now 4, combination of losses for us and wins by Houston.

Anyway will catch you on the Play-off picture for 3/30/1011.

    Have a good day.
