The Roy Effect..

Hello,

This is my first blog, and am sorry to start on such a 'Realistic' (negative) note.

I LOVE the Blazers.. and am a huge fan of ALL of our players.. even our newest lease, Chris Johnson!!

That being said, I watched tonights game against Denver, and was frustrated by a decision to play an injured player.  Wesley started the game amazingly with 17 points.  He gets a nasty roll on his already injured ankle.  He starts the second half, honestly bringing me HUGE relief, after fearing his injured departure from the next few games.  In 19 seconds, he gets his Knee slammed into by Carmelo (a sign from the Gods?).. That's it.. I can't take anymore of one of my favorite players laying on the hardwood.

The game goes on.. We're still in it.. DC scores a couple shots, and blocks another.. Right when we were asking for energy!  All was well until the next set of substitutions..

DC out, CJ in... Really?!  LMA played awesome yesterday.. hmm.. was it because he was rested?  Wouldn't want him getting too much of that!!  Lets just leave him in..  On the other hand...  DC?... Maybe his energy was a clear sign he needed some bench time..

So... on that note.. lets bring in our injured player.. Like LA, we don't seem to care about that investment enough to rest him...  This is the justification for the Blog Title..

We have seen SOOOOOOOO many times, that when our biggest scorer gets injured, we play him.  In the past the person was Roy.. In the future, I imagine it will be LA... but tonight, it was Wesley Mathews.  I LOVE that our players have so much heart.. They can't STAAAAAAAND to sit by and watch the game go on without them. I LOVE it.. but REALLY?!?! Have we not learned our lesson?  Of all teams in the NBA, WE decide to push it?  

As much heart as they may have... The ultimate decision comes down to somebody in a suite.. I'm not sure who.. is it our medical staff?  Our coaches?  

Roy blows his knees.. We play him.. Roy gets surgery.. We play him.. Roy comes in and can't produce (The way we/he know he can..)WE PLAY HIM....  Is this just our way?.. What's our justification?  " He was playing good earlier".. "He did it before!".. um, coach.. he just missed 17 shots(<

Tonight.. Wesley has a great start.. then gets injured.. then gets injured again.. lets bring him in. In over 7 minutes.. Wesley has 1 rebound, 1 asst., gives up 2 fouls.. at what point i wonder, did they think he was back to his normal self?  Maybe they just didn't think anybody else sitting on the bench could do that much in 7 minutes?  We HAD to play him?  

I'm sorry I'm soo sarcastic/negative.. I'm just frustrated, and thought I'd take advantage of this awesome Blogosphere created for us to see if I was alone?!  I'm sure when all is said and done, Blazers fans ARE the best.. and I probably stand at the lower end of the spectrum in the eyes of most (after this..).. but I may end up alone.. just me, and my blog..

Thank you for reading!  Again.. I can't apologize enough for the negative feel of this blog.... and for all the gramatical <<< errors!  I just love the players we have, and cant stand to see them either overplayed.. or overplayed w/injury..

    I know for a fact you're not the only frustrated Blazers fan. I also know that you're not the only one that's sick of dealing with injuries and rehabbing players.

    That said, I don't think all the blame can be laid on the coaches or trainers. NBA players are professionals. They know, or think they know/feel, what their bodies can handle. According to Jason Quick's Twitter account, Wesley looked like he was BEGGING trainer Jay Jensen to let him back into the game.

    In my opinion the decision to play is made by the coaches trainers and the player. Because its a group decision it's hard to place blame anywhere.

  2. @sarahhecht, I agree. I LOVE Nate.. And I know the decision isn't as simple as one persons desires. I only worry about pushing our guys too hard =-/

  3. I myself was shocked when they kept Wes on the floor. I would have been happy to let Patty and Rudy to finish the game. Also, I don't think you are being negative you are just calling it how you see it.

  4. I completely agree, I only wonder why didn't we trade Roy just after signing him to a huge contract knowing about his knee problems. You can't tell me the Blazer ownership did not know of this problem, as far as that goes they knew about Oden's problems before drafting him, why did they still draft him #1.
