You really can’t talk long about the breadth of sports in the state of Oregon without mentioning the Portland Trail Blazers. And at the state’s foremost award show honoring athletic achievement, the Oregon Sports Awards, Trail Blazers nation was out in full force.
Mr. Rip City himself Bill Schonely led out to the show’s first break with mascot Blaze holding the mic.
Segment Two saw Terry Porter introduce a new award, aptly named the Terry Porter make it better Award. Porter’s passion for service and dedication to helping his community is rivaled by few, and this award was designed to celebrate those whose selfless commitment enriches the lives of others in our community.
“It was very humbling to have an award named after me,” said Porter. “I was really touched by it. It’s always great to hear what young people do in this community.”
The Schonz was back at work in Segment Four when he and longtime Trail Blazers beat writer Dwight Jaynes presented another new award, The Game Changer Award, recognizing a lifetime of dedication to high school sports.
But the Trail Blazers really provided the entertainment in Segment Five. Rudy Fernandez and Patty Mills were honored with presenting the Harry Glickman Award for outstanding male and female professional athletes. Rudy needed to break out his Three Goggles to read the award winners’ unique names, Mariel Zagunis and Ndamukong Suh, but the crowd loved every minute of the banter between two of the Rose Garden’s favorite sons.
The night even concluded with our very own Trail Blazers Television Analyst Michael Holton conducting interviews with some of the event’s winners and presenters.
Porter, Holton’s co-host on Trail Blazers Television, summed up the show this way: “There are a lot of unbelievable achievements in Oregon every year, and it’s great to see the players and teams honored for what they do.”
I would pay to see Rudy try to pronounce "Ndamuknog Suh." Is there video of this anywhere?
The show is scheduled to air tonight at 8 pm on CSN.
I enjoy seeing pro athletes give back to the kids in the community ! Great job GO BLAZERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonder how blaze sounds?
