Dog Park Reopens with Community Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 7

PORTLAND, Ore. (September 5, 2013) — The Portland Trail Blazers are teaming up with Banfield Pet Hospital® and Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) to provide and celebrate important renovations to one of Portland’s most popular dog parks, PP&R’s Sacajawea Park, on Saturday, Sept. 7.

A total of 30 volunteers, consisting of associates from the Trail Blazers and Banfield, as well as local community members, will gather at 10 a.m. to make improvements to the park. Volunteers will plant wildflower and grass seed, and spread new paw-friendly cedar chips. Additional amenities to the renovated PP&R park include a new water drainage system, water spigots and a picnic table.

Trail Blazers radio broadcaster Antonio Harvey will lead a ribbon-cutting ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. commemorating the renovation of the park. The new-and-improved dog park will reopen following the ceremony when community members are invited to come out and join the celebration with their pets!

During the celebration, Banfield associates will provide information regarding their veterinary services and hand out pet-related giveaways. Dr. Andrea Sanchez, medical director for Banfield, will also be on-hand to provide dog park etiquette and tips on how to properly exercise pets. Other Trail Blazers personalities, including team mascot Blaze the Trail Cat and the BlazerDancers, will join Banfield and Portland Parks Commissioner Amanda Fritz for the celebration. There will also be cupcakes, raffle prizes, dog treats and a professional pet photo booth to celebrate the reopening until noon.

“I applaud the partnership the City has with Banfield Pet Hospital, the Portland Trail Blazers and community volunteers,” said Commissioner Fritz. “It is wonderful to see these partners come together to renovate Sacajawea Dog Park.”

As part of a partnership with the team, Banfield created an annual dog park renovation program. Now in its third year, Trail Blazers fans voted again for one of three PP&R dog parks to receive a makeover courtesy of Banfield and the Trail Blazers. Sacajawea won with a resounding 71 percent of the votes (of 11,105 votes).

Located in Northeast Portland at NE 75th Avenue and Roselawn Street, the 4.9-acre Sacajawea Park was named after Shoshone Indian Sacajawea, who famously guided Lewis and Clark across the west. A popular off-leash dog park, PP&R believes both two and four-legged visitors will greatly benefit from the renovations.
