PORTLAND, Ore.
- The Trail Blazers will honor the men and women of the armed services when the team hosts its eighth annual Military Appreciation Night on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 12, when the Trail Blazers host the Atlanta Hawks.
Fans will be welcomed by a group of Marines from the 6th Engineer Support Battalion as they enter the arena. The Marines, who will be joined by volunteers from Les Schwab Tire Centers, will be collecting toys for
Toys For Tots
, a program spearheaded by U.S. Marine Corps Reserves that collects and distributes toys to disadvantaged children.
Throughout the game, various branches of the military will be recognized. Oregon National Guard Sergeant Duane Reno will tip things off as he honors America with the singing of the national anthem. Halftime will feature a special flag ceremony.
The Trail Blazers'
make it better
honoree for the game will be
Bailey Leonard
, the older brother of Trail Blazers rookie center
Meyers Leonard
. Bailey recently served two terms in Afghanistan as a U.S. Marine and will be watching his younger brother play professionally for the first time Monday. Additionally, Meyers purchased a group of seats and donated them to military families.
Military personnel are encouraged to wear their uniforms to the game, and will be welcomed to enter the arena with their families to watch player warm-ups at 5:30 p.m., before the doors open to the general public.
For every ticket purchased through the Military Night offer, the Trail Blazers will donate a ticket to a local military family. Fans interested in supporting the cause by purchasing tickets can call (503) 963-3963.
