So far he is doing a good Job!

And still, he as money left to get a backup PG and SF...

The best thing is that we got good players (i think) for a good price, and most of them are young, and can still become better....

@ Nuno, don't give up so soon on Freeland; I think his play this season will surprise u in a GOOD way ;)  IF Joel doesn't play MUCH better by the All-Star break (which I think is doubtful)... THEN we cut ties w/ him.

It looks very much like the Blazers are getting New Orleans' former-center Robin Lopez... to start of I don't like Robin Lopez at all... he plays terrible defense and has no low-post game which is what we need to compliment Lamarcus... BUT I think there is hope when reading through some of the articles about both the Asik or Gortat trade that would have the Blazers attaining one of these players for the rights to JJ Hickson and Sasha Pavlovic it was mentioned several times that both teams, the Rockets and the Suns, wanted a little bit more... this is where I see Robin Lopez fitting in as the third piece in exchange for one of these two, much better, centers.

OMG I AM PISSED YO!!!! We traded Jeff Withey in the deal.

League source with knowledge of trade for Robin Lopez confirms they will trade Jeff Withey, a future 2nd-rd pick and cash in deal.

Portland will send Jeff Withey to Pelicans as part of 3-team deal, league source tells Y!

EXACTLY! I AM SO PISSED! I did not want Lopez to begin with, and then they traded Withey. WHYYYY! WHYY!!!!!

WHYYYYYYYYYYty. This is just bad. Withey was a rebounding shot blocking backup. Now we are back to the same position with as last year, with a horrible defender at centre. This time he can't even rebound, doesn't have a semblance of a mid range game (My boy shot 46% from 10-16, and 49% from 16-3pt), and can't dunk like JJ.

I am a fan of Raymond Felton. Haha, seriously though I'm a fan of Batum's Lobs and JJ's Slams.

Well that leaves 2 spots needed to fill now... right? or is it 3?

    PG/SF/C? ok 3.

Keep Nolan around for next to nothing, keep babbitt around for next to nothing, and look for a center with what we have left? or trade up at center and sign someone like prizbilla again? There are plenty of options for low salary amounts available. And if I read about this right, we still have an exception of 2.6M, so we could chase someone with that also.

Correct me if I missed something.

If I understand the comments made on my post up front then if we signed Wright we would have 13 players after signing our draft picks McCollum and Crabbe plus Lopez, T-rob plus our 8 under contract including Freeland.

Again, provided that we keep Bro-pez (w/ things still in flux, we don't know yet if Neil is gonna pkg him & turn him into some1 new!  hahaha! ;) & r going the route of center by committee (which I actually believe to b the best bang for the buck)... picking up B. Wright makes the most sense (for a solid bench sf we should ALSO pick up D. Wright ;)

@ Victor Solorio, agreed; that's EXACTLY why I've been pushing for ur Zazas, Bro-pezs, Wrights, McGees etc.  All the guys I've named & wanted, weren't gonna stop Meyers from ascending when he's ready & IF Meyers doesn't make it to where we want him to, we can replace him w/ another 1 of "these kinds of guys" to rejuvenate our center by committee pool ;)

I found this little nugget on ESPN.  I remember the Spurs wanting to move his expiring contract @ the trade deadline now they wanna keep him.  His performance in the Finals helped with that.

     http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/5-on-5-130704/good-deals-bad-deals-free-agency

"Kevin Pelton, ESPN Insider: Good deal. "Fair" is probably a more accurate descriptor, but Splitter was likely to get a similar offer from Portland or another team and San Antonio would have had a tough time replacing his versatility. Judging Splitter based on the Finals and not the 96 games that preceded them is a mistake."

Lopez for Withey, and 2 future seconds is not a bad deal.

Not a big fan of having to pay Lopez's trade kicker, which puts his salary up to 6.9 million. However, he should be able to split time with Leonard and give us solid minutes as a backup or starter.

I really like this trade. Robin Lopez is a great fit for Portland. I think seeing Lopez, Leonard, Aldridge, Lillard, and Batum on the court would produce some intense results. I had hoped for a veteran Center to help Leonard along but this is just as well.

Lopez is very good in the pick and roll which most likely made him a target for Portland. He can get offensive boards but he can contribute more on the defensive end for boards. He has potential on the defensive end and already has the shot blocking part down. He can learn from Aldridge on the O end of the floor in the post game. This will help Aldridge as well in becoming more of a leader. With Lopez now and a complete starting five and 4 of 5 positions filled for back ups Neil can make it easier on them trying to sign a small forward and don't think Portland won't do a sign and trade with hickson for one for the remaining cap. That's if Portland does not get d wright. I'm sure dorrel will consider that he will get more playing time through us then he will from the thunder who offered him a contract most likely for less since they don't have cap space to work with unlike us.

That's what I was wondering.  Just cause Withey was stolen doesn't mean they have to actually catch a guilty conscience that requires he be given away.

I think I reread the draft results 5 times & checked a couple other sport websites before I believed Withey was really drafted.   Being from western Kansas made it that much better.  Pritchard, T-Rob & now Withey...right on!?  At least 80% of the starting line up hasn't been traded off & is still on the roster vs. the Trader Bob daze.

Front office is consistent in drafting from Kansas & trading him off before he was able to put a hat on, lol.

Would like to say I'm looking forward to the cat fights at the elbow, either side, between Lopez and LMA but don't think Olshey is done.  To get a center, you have to give up one.  Olshey now has a starting caliber center (by todays standards) to offer, and picked him up for nothing.  Portland is a buyer this off-season.  There are sellers, teams looking to shed some payroll.  Lopez is a CHEAP 5...

Can't think of another starting center that makes for a worse compliment to LMA.  There's smoke here...

I don't know, with lopez it is going to be really hard to double team LA or Lillard. He will be able to open up a crack to the hoop even Wes can get through. I did not see the Withey portion of the deal I just saw 2 second round picks.

I don't think Gortat is much better than Lopez. Funny beacause many were willing to give up the 10th for Gortat.

    Per 36 Lopez 16pts 8 rebs 2 blks

    Gortat 14pts 10 rebs 2blks

Gortat is a better rebounder, but RoLo is a better shot blocker (higher BLK%)

Withey is not some great savior he went 39 overall for a reason. Yes he can block shots, and grab some board, he also is terribly slow, which will lead to him getting murdered in pick and roll. Not a good fit in the open floor needs to be on a half court based team to thrive. He is also 23 and only has a 7'1.5" wingspan.

I was not a fan of this draft or Withey so I have no problem seeing us use him to add a piece.

Not the best players in college make the best NBA players. Jeff Withey has the potential to be a solid pro, but you take the sure thing over the unknown. Lopez will be a solid pick and roll/ defensive player and with Meyers off the bench. Besides, it would've been hard to find him minutes with 2 true centers ahead of him on the depth chart, especially if you want Robin and Meyers with 20+ minutes a game each

Have you people ever watched Robin Lopez play!? Good lord!! The dude opens up an entirely new offense just by being on the court. You HAVE to cover him on the Pick n Roll, you HAVE to stop him from offensive boards, you CANNOT double team him, You HAVE to play tight. When defenses play like that on Lopez, imagine how Lillard is going to play on the 1 on 1, with the lane wide open. Imagine the pass inside to Aldridge when the miss-match off the pick n roll is in Blazer favor. My lord people, I have seen games where Lopez takes over the entire game because the defense is TOO concerned about him.

Well for one thing, we absorb Robin Lopez's contract worth 5 million a year which ate up about half of our available cap space, its three 2nd rounders from what I'm reading and we traded center for center..There is no improvement.

With the cap we have left there is no player we could sign outright and get improvement. The only positive about Lopez is that he is a smart mature player...Still lacking skills though.

This move is more about depth and room for improvement. this isn't about trading a center for a center. We traded potential for the real deal. Half the available cap space of about 8 mil is nothing for a legit center, quite ya bitchin

    Amen

    Pryzbilla

    08-09  82 games played: 23.8 mpg  5.5 ppg  8.7 rpg (2.5 offensive) 1.18 bpg   salary  $6.3 mil

    Lopez

    12-13  82 games played:  26 mpg  11.3 ppg 5.6 rpg (2.8 offensive)  1.6 bpg  salary $5 mil

Lopez will only be making $6.7 mil this season because of a $1.6 mil trade kicker.

Best bang for a Blazer buck.  I'm just keepin it real(istic).  Have no idea what fans expected, but this was a solid move by Olshey.

"bang for your buck" Are we trying to win or are we shopping for Peanut butter?

I agree that Robin Lopez is a good value at 6.7 Million per yr. in fact per dollar spent Robin Lopez is better than Howard, Horford and Hibbert. But from a fans perspective, that is no way to run an NBA franchise, and really what is the team without the fans? The fact is that we have been rebuilding this team for 12 years and we had a chance to drastically improve this team this off season, but decided to spend mediocre money for mediocre players.

Result: going to have a mediocre season. I hope I am wrong and will be a die hard Blazer fan till the end!
