We need to start thinking of what team we could get two quality Bench Players for 1 Batum?

Yea JJ and Jerome playe the same game.  I would love to see JJ at the three and then back up for LMA at the 4.  That would give us a great front line.  We just need to get a good strong Defensive Center that can train Leonard.  We could pick up Jermaine O'Neal cheap.  Use the salary cap and trading Batum to fill in the Gaps.

Kobe was a 3 time all-star and had 2 rings at Batums age.  He had established a repuation for playing hurt (which he's a legend for to this day).  Enough with the excuses.  Age, playing time, injuries, all a smoke screen.  Batum is a bust.

If you were LMA or LIllard, how would you feel about Batum?  Our two legit stars have a limited period of time to get a ring in the case of LMA, and make a name in the case of Lillard.  They would never say it, but they want somebody who can play on the court TODAY.  We are just a few pieces away from being a playoff team, and Batum is in no way a necessary part of that equation.  In fact, his absurd and untradeable salary is a problem.  He needs to go at the earliest opportunity.

Kobe also joined the league out of high school at 18 years of age and got those rings with Shaq in his prime. Not a real fair comparison. If you don't like Batum, fine, but these are different paths. Kobe was also the go to guy from day one and Nic wasn't. Compare their minutes early in their respective careers and it's a big difference. I agree, Kobe is and has been a better player than Batum but still think it's an unfair comparison.

I think we can get quality assets without trading Nico and be better off for it. I'd trade Barton, Freeland, Claver, Leonard ,sign and trade JJ, trade the 10th pick and spend 13mil in cap room to improve without losing a special talent like Nic. I believe Olshey will add without subtraction when it comes to the best 4 players on the team. If Batum's game degenerates after 2 more seasons, I'd reconsider but today he's a better player than he was last season.

There are a lot of teams who would take Barton. The way he played in the last month was legit. And he is a rookie. I also want to keep Batum, but a lot of people made good points. He is young, but he is a 5 year vet. I will give him a year before deciding.

There is NOT a clear leader on this team to call guys on their {insert expletive here } . A guy like Jarrett Jack or maybe even Tony Allen would be vociferous enough to get in guys grills and let them know where they should be as far as position. riverman said it best, Batum is a better player this year in Stotts' system than he was at anytime under McMillans watch. He has more freedom. Stotts is a players coach. He gives these guys room. If they ask for more responsibilities, he gives it to them, but he also holds them accountable without verbal assault. When you're dealing with children, you have to do more teaching than scolding. Some players don't respond well to the in your face approach. * See DeMarcus Cousins *  Chiefs start off as Indians. Keep in mind that the Lone Ranger did his best work with Tonto, Batman with Robin, Peanut Butter with Jelly. When it comes to fans, we want instant results. Pump your brakes, its not going to happen overnight.

Ok in your scenario, we get rid of  4 players, trade one and get one in return, keep Nico.  Who the hell else do we have on the team except starters?  Where is our bench?

We had no bench this year with palyers.  Now we have no bench with zero players.

    Nice move.

You misread my post Maniac, I meant I'd trade any of the players mentioned, or the pick, or spend the cap money to get assets before I'd trade Nic, Wes, Dame or LA for assets. It goes without saying when you do that you get players back. There are a lot of players I'd like here. We have 8 guys under contract. Of the guys I mentioned, I'd trade any bench player we have under contract for a defensive 2, 20 pt 6 man or rebounding center that protects the rim. Hell I'd be happy to pick up a young great center, 6 man and defensive combo guard and keep Claver, Leonard and Barton and resign Maynor. I like Reddick, Jack, Vucevic, Asik, Noah, Varejao, Allen, Barnes, Gibson, and a lot of players but hope we stay away from restricted free agents pretty much. I'm not informed enough about draft picks to make a choice this season because I didn't follow college ball at all. I also want a new assistant defensive coordinator on the bench next year but doubt that will happen.

It'll get some teams cap relief and give us roster spots. Basically we're talking Freeland, Claver, and I doubt they do it but Leonard are signed to a contract on the bench. JJ is a guy we could sign and trade in a deal to get a center that would start. Sure no team is going to trade straight across, it would have to include draft pick(s) and we have 13 mil to spend as well.

These are the strides I watched Batum make. A clearly different player from the previous season. I think Nic knows whats expected of him. I think as soon as we have some semblance of a bench, starters are going to get a much needed rest next season. Fatigue is responsible for a lot of injuries. But.. I digress.....

It boggles the mind at times when all i here is how bad a player is. I wonder if most critics are aware that less than one percent of basketball players even make it to the NBA. Fatigue is huge. Dont believe me, fight one 3 minute round in boxing...mess around and need an EKG STAT. Until we have a bench that can spell our starters competently,we're going to be in a world of hurt this season too. 14 minutes for each rotation player is what its going to take.

Durant plays 40 minutes so does Lebron, Kobe, Harden and you do not hear tales of two seasons from them. They do not turn wildly inconsistent. A bench would help so would hitting the gym and bulking up some.

LOL last season Batum wasn't getting enough minutes.  Now it's too much?  Lillard who hasn't had 4 seasons of NBA schedule and trainers to harden him up played how many minutes?  MORE THAN BATUM.  He's also more active, more consistent, more polished, gets way more respect from opposing players and coaches, 2 years younger than Batum, and a ROOKIE.  This is what a young star looks like.

yeah well, Damian was great, we all know that. he was also healthy all season as were the other players you mentioned and they didn't play the minutes Damian or Nic played. They were top 3 in the league. Batum bashing is getting to be played out. Damian is not nearly the defender Nico is either.

LOL you guys crack me up.

Here is the truth about Batum, he is good, sometimes even very good, but he is not built to carry a team. Therefore,  he will never ever be a star. Furthermore, everyone who thinks it is so wrong to trade him needs to realize that he is replaceable.

    He is not better than:

    Lebron James

    Kevin Durant

    Carmelo Anthony

    Paul George

    Josh Smith

    Those 5 are not debatable.

    AK-47

    Rudy Gay

    Luol Deng

    Paul Pierce

    Andre Iguodala

    Danilo Gallinari

All pretty much match or exceed Batum's production

    Jimmy Butler

    Kwahi Leonard

    Tobias Harris

    Tyreke Evans

    Chandler Parsons

    Ersan Ilyasova

Are not significant drop offs in production some might even have better numbers but are not as good of two way players.

That is at least 17 players in the NBA at this moment who could easily replace Batum matching his production or offering a small decline or offer even more production.

Plus you still rookies like still improving

    Harrison Barnes

    Michael Kidd Gilchrist

    Moe Harkless

    AND new Rookies like

    Otto Porter

    Anthony Bennett

    Shabazz Muhammad

This is why I am always so willing to trade Batum and why I demand more out of him. He is a good player, making 11 plus million at arguably the deepest position in the NBA.

J-Smoove too expensive and he's not worth it. Stotts offence is Jumpers, and we know how J-Smoove is with those. AK-47 great defence, but not enough offence and we can't afford to lose a scorer with our bench. Iggy would be amazing, but we would be in a bidding war with a lot of teams, and if we sign him, we can't get a defensive centre, our only choice would be to draft one and there aren't any good ones at 10. Denver won't trade their leading scorer. Bulls won't trade Butler for Batum. Tyreke, maybe, but he's not a SF, not a PG, not a SG either. Who can we get?

CMMEESE47 your post is dead on accurate about the SF's in the NBA.  Batum's no trade is up in July 18, 2013.

I am hoping Olshey trades him and gets ride of David Kahn's stupid contract that he dumped on us with that offer sheet.

Think about it. right know he have about $10m or so in cap room, just a thought trade Batum for future first round picks, dump is $11M to another team, sign jj for say $5m to $6m, sign maynor for $3m and that gives us another $3m to $4m of cap room, now we are talking $14m to $15m in Cap room, plus our exception, that gives us more room.

Currently, the new CBA stipulates a minimum salary cap of $58.044 million. If this holds true, Portland will have $12,908,926 in available cap room. The cap can increase based on revenue, and as Larry Coons reported via twitter, the most current projection for the 2013-2014 cap is $60 million. In this instance, the Blazers will have $14,908,926 in cap space.

So if the Salary Cap is at $60M, we will have $15M in cap, and if trade Batum we add another probably $4m after signing JJ & Maynor and trading Batum.  Pretty good spending money, to get a good defensive center, and some good quality bench strength.

We needs a small forward like Kersey, Bobby Gross, Clyde Drexler, Kiki Vandeweghe, and JJ would be a good alternative at the SF position.  What do all these SF's have in common.  They are not afraid to go to the paint and they were consistent in their play.

Have a front line with LMA, JJ at SF, and then get a good strong Defensive minded Center in Free Agency, bring in Jermaine O'Neal to teach Leonard, bring on Lambier as a Center's coach.  Our backcourt is Wes and Damian, then we have Maynor, Jermaine Oneal, Leonard off the bench, that is a pretty good starting point for the Blazers.

I do not know, maybe I am dreaming, but I reallt thing Batum is more valuable to us as trade bait.

JJ is projected to get 7.2 mil next season, Maynor 4+. Nic is scheduled to come in in June to work with the coaching staff on creating his shot which he wants to improve. I guarantee Nic will be here next season, the coaching staff and front office love the guy and so do I. I predict he'll have a break out season next year. JJ is gone next season. His agent as much as said so. He would agree to a sign and trade to the right team which is where his value will be. Maynor is a question mark depending on how much a center will cost us in cap room.

um, guy batum was going to be a all-star this season before his injuries. he was carring our team. you guy are looking after the post injuries. this offseason will only make him healthier, and hopefully we get some kind of a defense center. we can go after parson in the FA, maybe sign o'neal to 3 year and 2 million per year. draft dieng and trade 2 2nd round pick for thunder 12th pick and draft mccollum. there would be 9 million left. so sign parson to 5 year and 8 million per year to pull him from rockets. this way batum can play way better at SG since he doesn't have to play one of the deepest position in nba. wesley can go off the bench. bang we wins 50+ games next year. any way, batum will be a all-star next year, i promise

I agree with riverman and DamianLillard, I still believe Nic can be better than this season. I like Parsons, but he is in the future for the Rockets that deal would not get him here, and he is too good for that deal, expect the Rockets to give him a pretty hefty deal, which will not matter to them considering they have the lowest payroll in the league.
