Rookie Ladder: Lillard Gets It Going | Drew Packham

    July 16, 2012
Lillard scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half Sunday night (on his 22nd birthday), and looked good doing it. Lillard ran the pick-and-roll well with fellow first-rounder Meyers Leonard (who had a double-double and could be on the Ladder soon) and got to the rim well, going to both his left and right. Lillard's nice debut lands him a high rung, but we'll see if he'll be able to hold onto it.
Just missed cut: Denzel Bowles, Tony Wroten, Meyers Leonard, Tyler Zeller

In a couple games Leonard will emerge as the top center in the summer league, This does not mean he has the most future potential. I think his play last night showed his MOTOR, HEART, and SKILL. I would have liked to get Drummond in the draft as well as Leonard and Lillard but I think we got 2 great picks and it is hard to say we could have done better.

And who sit on the top of this list? Is he really our 41th pick, who we sent to Brooklyn for 3m$?

Did we do the right thing?

it's a joke that leonard isn't on this list after a double double and 4 blocked shots.

i'd like to see lillard dunk on somebody. i am still curious to know the degree of explosivness he has. does he get up like rose and westbrook?

If you watched last night's game, it's really hard to not be impressed by Lillard and Leonard. Chris Webber broke down all the small things Leonard was doing in the game such as setting good screens every time, constantly running the floor to open lane for others and knocking down FTs. I believe we struck gold with both our lottery picks.

These are just based on summer league games so Leonard and Lillard have time to rise or fall from the list

I was really impress with Leonard. What a motor! He'll earn playing time doing that. The screens were great, and we'll need that without Joel.

Lillard looked good in the second half. He's a real solid drive and kick player. We just have to have Babbitt continue to knock down threes. Wes too, since, apparently, Batum doesn't like knocking down threes anymore. I was less impressed with Lillard's ability to run the pick and roll than I was with Leonard. He sets a great pick, puts the dude on his back, then darts to the rim. It's what's supposed to happen, but he does it remarkably well. Although, maybe I'm just so used to seeing our big guys set a lazy screen and not seal the guy. Whatever the case, I'm feeling really good about Leonard. I feel good about Lillard's ability to score. I'm not yet sold on his ability to create, except for driving and kicking, which he does well.

Babbitt has really developed his handle, don't you think? He was dribbling through a lot of traffic with ease, it seemed.

Bynum,Howard and Perkins are really going to put muscle on Leonard it will be interesting to see how he reacts. That being said it will also be interesting on how they handle his speed because he has a good quick and go. I only saw the first half so I got to see alot of clangers but DAM Lillard can move. Nolan has improved and he has a sweet little shot. Dammit Babbit BOX OUT he would have had 4 more rebounds and way to go with 10.

Rookie Ladder: Lillard Making Push | Drew Packham

    July 18, 2012
For now, Houston guard Jeremy Lamb keeps the top spot, but Portland point guard Damian Lillard is making a strong case.

Tuesday night, the two teams squared off, with Houston's crop of rookies getting the win over Lillard and the Blazers, despite Lillard's 27-point outburst.

Blur your vision when he drives the lane, and you'll think Brandon is back in a Blazers uniform. This kid is not the next D. Rose or Russell Westbrook, he's a whole other guy. In a few years, people might be scouting college players and saying they're the next Damian Lillard. He's gonna be that kind of name; you can tell already.

I agree. He has that same "it" factor that Roy had. I can't think of one player to compare him to. He's not as athletic as Rose but he gets to the cup in a similar manner, yet he's also a much better shooter than Derrick. When he shoots from the perimeter he reminds me of Steph Curry. So, I guess my best comparison for him would be a hybrid Rose/Curry.

Yes, but I think he will, cmeese. He'll calm down and learn when not to try to go behind the back or through the legs, etc. Also his teammates will learn where he likes to pass-off, and will be in the right spots. I expect his assist numbers to go up when playing with our starting 5, and I expect he'll reign in the turnover numbers by the all-star break.

I am not going to worry about the turnover ratio until next year. He will have the ball 70% of the time and he is a rookie by the end of the season he should have that toned down. Plus if he creates 7 turnovers and has the ball 70% of the tim and the rest of the team has 3 turnovers 30% of the time that would be 10 turnovers for the game not the best stat but I will take that anyday over the 20 + we usually get as long as the assist ratio is 2 to 1 or better.

Rookie Ladder: Lillard Making Push | Drew Packham

    July 20, 2012
After three games it is absolutely crystal clear -- Damian Lillard has been the most dominant, game-changing rookie of Summer League.

Lillard's 31-point, seven-assist showing Thursday not only helped the Blazers beat the Hawks, but it helped Lillard leapfrog Jeremy Lamb (who wrapped up his five games Wednesday) for the top rung of the Ladder.

And the way Lillard's playing, I'll be shocked if he relinquishes his spot. Lillard is in control (just three turnovers Thursday in 31 minutes of action) and showed he can finish around the rim, as seen by this monster dunk over Keith Benson.

Player of Summer League: Hands down, no question about this one: Damian Lillard. From start to finish Lillard looked polished with his handling of the pick and roll. The Weber State product will likely start from Day 1 and will give us a fun, young point guard to watch this season. Now, can he do it on a nightly basis against Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook? With his "something to prove" attitude, something tells me he'll do just fine. NBA.COM

Portland Trail Blazers forward Joel Freeland didn't log many minutes in Great Britain's 90-58 win over China on Monday, but he still found a way to make his presence felt. In just 10 minutes of play, Freeland scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting and pulled down 6 rebounds. His playing time was limited due to foul trouble; he quickly racked up 4 fouls trying to guard Jianlian Yi.

Speaking of rookies... I remember when we first got Jermaine O'Neal.
The Phoenix Suns have signed 16-year NBA veteran Jermaine O'Neal.

Length of the contract wasn't disclosed.

The 6-foot-11 O'Neal is expected to back up center Marcin Gortat, a role previously held by Robin Lopez, who has been traded.

The 33-year-old center has career averages of 13.7 points and 7.4 rebounds. O'Neal was drafted 17th overall directly out of high school. Later, with the Indiana Pacers, he played in six consecutive All-Star games. He also played for Toronto, Miami and Boston.

Eddie Jordan has pick D.Lill to be ROY

     Damian Lillard, Portland

I must admit that I have a hard time giving a player any juice before he actually shows me something, but there's something about Lillard that tells me he's going to explode. I love the fact that a top-quality player stayed at a school (Weber State) that was out of the spotlight and low on the totem pole, but still was found by NBA scouts. That tells me Lillard can ball. In the summer league, he showed glimpses of what could come next. Portland is the perfect situation for him, a place where he'll receive a green light to go. I love his tenacity, scoring ability and physical presence. I am picking him right now as favorite to win Rookie of the Year in 2013.

Rookie Ladder: Big Things In Store | Drew Packham

    October 9, 2012
Is Damian Lillard the real deal? From what I saw in Las Vegas, the answer is a clear YES. But that was Summer League and plenty of rookies have blown up in Vegas only to fall by the wayside once the season starts. Lillard looked polished, though, and should establish himself as the point guard of the future in Portland. If he plays like he did in Vegas, he'll be a serious contender for top rookie.

Just a thought. I checked out Anthony Davis's stats for the preaseason. They're impressive; he's definitely rivaling Damian right now... and since he's the given favorite as the #1 pick (which I think is a flawed way to look at it; everyone should have a clean slate) it's going to be a battle.

One number stood out to me more than any other, though: 1.5 fouls per game. You expect me to believe that a defensive rookie big is somehow avoiding the foul plague that affects all his counterparts? You can't tell me that he hasn't done more than half the stuff that Meyers Leonard has. Why isn't he getting the calls? Do NBA refs suck that much? I'm starting to think NBA referees are the worst officials in all professional sports. No joke.

Maybe its because he was picked first. And, he's going to be playing the pf spot, while Leonard is at the pivot spot. Dame gets ROY because he'll have the rock in his hands.

I'll admit I wasn't giving AD enough credit. The kid can ball and he's a smart defender, but here's the REAL issue I have.

Leading up to the draft (and emphasized by Team USA this summer) there was a lot of talk about AD having "superstar potential". All Stars are selected by coaching staff (except the dumb fan voting), and so based on stats, production, leadership, and the W column, All Stars are basically all skilled players. You always hear "those are all star type numbers."

It's impossible to say "those are superstar type numbers." A superstar is an all star with national popularity, but that's the key word: POPULARITY. So basically, by calling AD a potential superstar, you essentially make him one automatically. Nobody should walk into this league with a borderline superstar status. That's ridiculous.

    Rookie Ladder: Pre-Season Wrap-Up | Drew Packham

    October 30, 2012
Damian Lillard didn't come out of Weber State a household name, but he will be soon enough. Lillard's play in Las Vegas caught a lot of attention (and the top rung on the Ladder) and he continued his solid play in the preseason, averaging 16.2 points (first among rookies) on 45.8 percent shooting. The Blazers' point guard also led all rookies in assists (5.8 per game) and has a real good chance of finishing he season first in both categories.

Although I'm never a fan of handing out awards like ROY until a majority of the season is in the bag, Lillard should be in the conversation all year. He reminds me most of Isiah Thomas but is built more like Chauncey Billups. I love his maturity, loyalty and team first personality. We struck gold with this kid and his upside is just crazy! He may just be the next BRoy but something I like better about him than Roy is that he will get teammates involved and doesn't need to play iso ball. I hope him and LA become the next Stockton/Malone.

Whoa riverman, way to name-drop right into seriously high expectations. I'm not sure Lillard and Aldridge will ever rival the greatest 1-4 tandem of all time, but they looked good tonight.

Depending on the weight put on those turnovers, I think he just did enough to be a rung above AD when it comes to debut games. Both of them looked excellent, though.

when your in the same sentence as the Big O & Isiah Thomas your on the right track.

"Lillard joined Oscar Robertson (21 points, 10 assists for the Cincinnati Royals in 1960) and Isiah Thomas (31 points, 11 assists for the Pistons in 1981) as the only players in NBA history with 20 or more points and at least 10 assists in their NBA debuts."

I can't wait till Friday because that where we see where he stands against one of the elite guards go get em!
