I actually think Nic is being very smart about this whole thing. It's not like he can do anything about the damage his agent is causing. He put out the only 4 words straight from the horse's mouth, "trust me I didn't," and now he seems to be aware that he can only make the situation worse by going public with anything.

It takes maturity to keep ones mouth shut during a disaster like this, and I applaud him for sticking it out for a few more days.

I hear what you're saying Pickett, it's usually the best thing when drama pops up to just stay out of it... but I think this situation is different, because like you said, Ndaiye is directly sabotaging Nico. Batum COULD do something about the damage the agent is causing, by coming out and specifically stating that what has been said came from the agent, and it's not how he feels. Yes, the consequences of this would be a rift between he and the agent, which if it happened now would probably result in Batum not having direct representation and therefore he wouldn't be as likely to get top dollar for his next deal... but on the other hand, he'd have his morality intact. Because honestly, the longer that you knowingly let someone else slander your reputation, the more likely that they say something that has no respect or appreciation for your position.

Nip it in the bud Nico, send Ndaiye packing and swallow the consequences. It's better than letting this get any worse.

    Via Canzano-
Blazers offer to Hibbert is "so front loaded with money" that all are taking this seriously, source said. Pacers can still match.
Free agent C Roy Hibbert is in Portland today, per source. He's taking physicals and doing medical.
     And from Mike Wells-
Restricted free agent Roy Hibbert is already in Portland where he'll sign his offer sheet (4 yrs $58 mill) w them at 9 pm PST tomorrow.

I fully expected Indiana to match... they have no other option of staying relevant.  I'm upset it took them this long to state it, as most free agents already have agreed with teams.

Now I believe a sign and trade with Batum is the best option rather than to pay him as a marquee player.  Get Derrick Williams and Webster (to waive).  After this I believe the Blazers should go hard after O.J. Mayo and try to get Pryz to resign.  Mayo and Williams are young assets that are oozing with potential, that the Grizzlies and Timberwolves are squandering.  This would be a good reload while retooling option.

Indy is not matching our offer. They are offering an identical contract. Meaning they can still trade him. If they intended on keeping him they could have just matched our offer, but that would keep them from trading him. I'm now convinced that he will NOT be in Indy at the end of the season.

I am confused what is the difference between matching an offer and offering an identical contract.  These seem to be identical but the rules must be different.  Where did FoulWeatherFan get the information that describes the different conditions?  Do we know what they are looking to get in a trade?

Damn, we need a center!!! Oh we drafted one in the first round. If we can turn the team over to a small college unproven point, why can't we do the same with our center, lets see how far that will get us into the playoff hunt. Not looking good Blazers.

According to David Aldridge Indiana is offering a contract with the same provisions as Portland but they are not matching then what happens if Hibbert signs our contract instead of Indiana's on 7/11.  Since Indiana did not technically match do they have to resubmit their offer and match the offer?  What is gained by the way Indiana's offer is structured?  It seems this is a way to circumvent the rules under FA.

    From yahoo Sports:

Indianapolis Star Pacers beat writer Mike Wells has broken the news. The Indiana Pacers have decided to match the four-year, $58 million offer sheet All-Star center Roy Hibbert signed with the Portland Trail Blazers, an expected but still significant move. Significant because it denies the Blazers a chance at a terrific big man who is still developing. Significant because the Indiana Pacers are hardly a big-market team rolling in the dough. Significant because, as of Monday, Hibbert hasn't even officially signed the offer sheet Indiana is due to match.

I am a fan of our new roster playing with and for eachother.

that stinks, it's one of those 'told ya so' moments that suck. But what's next. I feel like Kaman is getting looked at to be signed by 4-5 other teams. Where does anyone see us in that running? And I feel like McGee just doesn't fit well here, he doesn't have great big man I.Q. Often is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Though I did like his plyoff performance, but just a raw guy which doesn't seem to be changing. Other than those two though, what options do we have? Freeland as our C? Idk, I don't see it. I'm not sure what our options are though.

so if they match they can't sign and trade?  portland was planning on matching batum and I thought they could still trade him if they want. I thought the whole point was to match so then you can trade and get something instead of nothing.   Is there any compensation if Portland doesn't match and batum signs with minnesota?

There's way too many rumors, but I've also heard portland talking about mcgee and lopez, but both are also restricted... and I've heard lopez possibly being traded in a deal to get what's his face from orlando.  dwight.  and then orlando would sign lopez to a big deal or he'd be signed before the trade, I dunno, but NBA network has been spifballing every rumor you can imagine and last I heard was a possible 3 team deal.  anyway, seems slim chances of getting brook.  maybe we can go after his brother robin... i think he's a FA or RFA with phoenix?  i forget.

You cannot trade a player you have matched an offer for in the first year. When teams agree to a sign and trade they tell the player what they are doing so he doesn't sign an offer sheet. That exact thing happened with Ryan Anderson in Orlando. They decided that the proposed offer was to high so they negotiated the sign and trade. The same will need to be done with Batum. If he truly never wants to play here again then signing an offer sheet would be very foolish. He either needs to negotiate a sign and trade or he can just walk next season. If he signs an offer sheet then we have two choices, loose him for nothing or match it. That's not the position he want's to put us in.

If Batum officially signs an offer sheet we either keep him or lose him simple as that no sign and trades can occur if he signs the sheet.

AS points out, Wolves have movable pieces to get under. If no Batum match, need to move ~$4mil for Roy and more for Shved. ... and that would be *after* amnestying Darko, cutting Miller and Webster and renouncing Tolliver. -Hollinger

so as far as i understand this means the timberwolves can't even offer him this offer sheet unless they make major moves before that which would be stupid for them since the blazers said they were going to match which makes me think batum won't sign any offer sheet by the timberwolves worth 45 million

Not sure if it's posted on here somewhere but since it's relative to this topic, the Blazers facebook page just posted, David Aldridge: Batum's First Choice Is Minnesota | http://bit.ly/NnVl4x

"I’m a restricted free agent,” Batum said. “I know the situation. Anywhere I sign, the Blazers are going to match. But my first choice was, and is, Minnesota. That’s where I want to play and that’s where I want to put my family. I’ve got nothing against the fans (in Portland) and nothing against the city."

All he says is he likes Minnesota because they have a young point guard, a coach he likes, and they impressed people last year...

What the heck does he think Portland is getting geared for?!?!? We have a first-round, young pointguard, we're getting to pick a coach that we want for the team, and we've got a roster full of young, blooming talent. We're in the same spot or better than where Minnesota was last year... plus we can give him more money, and we have WAY better weather than Minnesota (he says he wants Minnesota for his family? Does he realize they don't get to live in the gym with him? It's not like Minnesota has more parks or better schools or something, they just have more snow and ice lol).

Still doesn't make sense to me. Something's not being said.

Sign and trade Batum for Williams and picks. He is going to be really overpaid for someone who floats through half of the games. I was leery of matching knowing that, but would have been okay with it, feeling like he wanted to be here, and liked it here. Now, I want him gone quick. I know Batum is getting overpaid because of his potential, but I've started feeling like he's never going to be consistent, and that's something we can do without. Get Williams and picks.

He still said he wouldn't be upset staying in Portland. I just think he is a young guy who wants immediate satisfaction, something he sees more in Minnesota than here at the moment. I believe that if and when we match, he will still stay happy.

Do we have Kurt Thomas? I thought he was on a one-year contract. With Hibbert staying in Indiana, does that mean we give an offer sheet to JJ?

My understanding on Nic is that, if he signs the offer sheet from Minny, either we match and keep him or don't match and the Wolves get him. I'm pretty sure teams can't perform a sign and trade when they match an offer. That means, if Nic signs that offer sheet, we either get him or nothing. I'm guessing that's why Olshey is adamant about matching. You can't let talent like Batum just walk away, no matter what the price.

December 12, 2011 the Blazers signed Kurt Thomas to a 2 year contract with the second year partially guaranteed. Not sure what that means but maybe somebody else on here can enlighten me. All I know is that it seems that we do still have Thomas. http://www.blazersedge.com/2011/12/12/2631417/blazers-f-c-kurt-thomas-contract-details

After some research, here is a definition of a partially guaranteed contract.

"Some salaries are only partially guaranteed, and the guaranteed amount can change on specified dates. For example, $2.4 million of Lamar Odom's $8.2 million salary for 2012-13 was protected for lack of skill. If Odom's team does not put him on waivers on or before June 29, 2012, then Odom's compensation protection increases to full, meaning his entire $8.2 million salary becomes guaranteed"

So since the Blazers aren't making the offer anymore to keep the cap space, who should they go after?  McGee? Kaman? JJ?  They could also just hold out until next year to sign another FA like Josh Smith, David West, Andrew Bynum or the extreme outside chance we could land Dwight Howard (I can dream right?).

Also Paul Millsap will be a FA next year who was discussed as a Draft Day trade option for the Blazers this year. On another subject I really like the trade for Iggy, even though those talks may have fallen through.  Batum may be younger but Iggy is a great leader and a guy who can be the setup man on offense when Lillard needs a break.

I have always been a very big fan a Batum. I was hoping he stays, but after this free agency debacle I'm not so sure any more. It sucks that he said he wouldn't mind playing for the Blazers next year, and then he turns around and says something like this to another source when he is away in Madrid.  I am feeling a little spurned by this report myself! Just shows how unhappy he was here with Mcmillan. He has a phenomenal efficiency rating and is a great defender. And his offense will only get better from here every year. Especially when he is better coached. I  feel like he will be one of the best SF in the league in a few more years. I never felt like coach Mcmillan used Batum well for his abilities. That or he just didn't like Batum. I for one, was a Portland fan last year who was ecstatic that Mcmillan got fired. I feel like once the " BIg 3" (Aldridge, Roy, and Oden) didn't work out because of injuries, Mcmillan didn't know what to do with the talent available and squandered it. I think if Mcmillan had been let go a year earlier, we wouldn't even be talking about this right now with Batum. But that being said, we have a new GM, and will be adding a new coach. As well as improving are team substantially through FA I'm sure. Not to mention all the high potential draft picks we got. So my questions is then. why Batum now. WE ARE TRYING TO BUILD A TEAM AROUND YOU, and LMA. Portland deserves better then this from a player we have supported and been patient with for 4 seasons. But if you really want out that bad, then I say good riddance. If there is any truth to this three way Iggy trade, and Batum really hates being here, regardless of the improvements we are obviously making, then let him go and Hello Iggy.

I love the way Olshey has been handling business for us since he signed on, but he's talked himself into a corner here.

He has made two big, confident statements that don't add up:
    1) "We want players who want to be here"
    2) "We will match any offer for Nic and will not engage in sign-and-trade talks"

Nic has made it clear he doesn't really want to be here.  Yeah, he'd be okay if we kept him around, but he doesn't *want* to be here.  He wants a change of scenery--well, apparently a lack of scenery.  Neige neige neige.

At this point, Olshey has to eat his words, he just has to pick which words.  Either you stick to the core philosophy of getting players who WANT to compete as Blazers and you try to sign-and-trade for some solid building pieces, or you hang on to your bluff about matching and go against your principles.

Nic will either play great basketball for Minnesota next year, or mediocre basketball for us.  Even if things turn around and we get a coach he likes and allow him to play more of the game he wants, he's still going to be daydreaming about playing alongside Rubio and Love and kickin' it with B-Roy.

I'd rather get a young guy like Derrick Williams, tell him "this city believes in you and needs you to step up your game" and watch him rise to his potential/own his role in Rip City than watch Nic's talent fizzle out because of disappointment.  Additionally, I think the Wolves might let either a pick, a vet PG like Ridnour, or a back-up big come along with Williams in the trade, which fills another need without taking up a ton of cap space.  This means we could still snag a solid FA this season to fill out the roster, or instead use this season to develop the youth then snag a superstar next season.  A bunch of young, rising talent players paired with an All-star or two...sound like anyone you know?  (OKC).

We're probably going to have a tough year either way, but I'd rather set us up to have a great season in 2 years than have Nic limit our potential for the next 4.  He's good, but he won't be worth it if he's not excited to play in Portland (see: Rudy Fernandez).

all this crap with batum is a war of words

nothing you've heard has come out of his mouth

it's mostly his agent playing contract games

why do fans only want likeable players?  and why do fans believe all the crap they hear in the media?

There's a reason Portland hasn't won a title since 77... fans are spoiled babies who want the best talent for the cheapest price and they have to be likeable players.  When a guy with a chip on his shoulder like rasheed wallace comes to town, he's banished.

bottom line is whether or not batum can help us win

In a weak year of free agency, if batum goes,
we may end up with a player with minimal experience
and he may be a nice guy
    who doesn't cost much

but he'll also be about as developed as batum was 4 years ago

which to me is not a setback Olshey's going to want to endure... he wants this team going forward best he can.

and ya know what?  after all this bullshit, batum's going to get in front of the camera's and he'll say some scripted bullshit kinda like this:

    "I really love Portland,
I couldn't envision myself playing anywhere else.
I hope I am here until I retire.
Portland fans are the best in the NBA"

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
