He would never bash Portland they are the only team that could offer him 5 years instead of 4 in a contract.  If he gets an offer that he says he will sign then there is a limit to what Portland could do in matching.  I  wonder how much of what we are hearing is fodder.  Maybe we are already negotiating a sign and trade with Min.  It would seem things would add up if this were the case.

Yeah... Beasley is a bit of a risk, and I think draft day proved that Portland's not big on risks right now.

What are the options? The only other youthful free agent small forwards I like are maybe Jeff Green and Chase Budinger. But neither one of them is any better than Nic, and everyone else (aside from a few older guys) would be a step backward.

I think it might be a situation where you match no matter what and if he really doesn't want to play here (I don't buy it either), work out some kind of trade for a player with equal value and similar upside.

you know, I don't listen to beat writers at all.  I unsubscribed from the oregonian b/c of canzano, i hate jaynes, and i don't listen to quick or nobody.  sad that I even know their names, but for awhile it was hard to ignore.  now it's much easier... if ya'll would stop indulging them by mentioning them here, I could get complete closure from them losers.

Yeah, I heard nash is a laker.

I haven't heard for sure if batum's gone, but sounds that way.  His agent's been a dick.  I never treated batum bad, so he's not leaving cuz of me.

The biggest problem with Batum (and many players for that matter) is that fans have to hear what they're "worth"... and honestly it's not our business what they make.  It should not be disclosed to anyone.  Telling us what people make is the biggest mistake the nba and media could have done because now they all have to live up to a paycheck and we can put a dollar amount on them, which is BS.  I like Batum.  I think his ceiling is high and he hasn't come close to reaching it and I don't give a fuck if he's paid 10 dollars, 1 million, or 10 million... I want him to stay.... and if he ever reaches that ceiling, well, we're going to be sorry portland didn't pony up some extra money to keep him around.

I heard thabeet took an offer from somebody... else.

and I don't know what's up with hibbert... when do we know if our offer's matched or when he's a blazer?

Looks like Beasley has a verbal agreement with Phoenix anyway. Free agents (reportedly) are dropping like flies, and if Indiana matches the Hibbert offer Blazers walk away from this free agency period SOL. I'm starting to think Blazers will match Batum no matter what. He's the only SF of the future candidate on the market, except maybe Jeff Green, but his upside is way more questionable than Batum's. He was supposed to get his big chance in Boston, and that didn't pan out well.

Spencer Hawes and Omer Asik have reportedly agreed to deals, and that means all our eggs are in Indiana's basket. Maybe Meyers Leonard will get that starting center role quicker than expected. It also looks like several PGs are off the market. I don't think we'll be seeing huge changes to our roster happening via free agency.

Sounds like Denver miscalculated with McGee.... 10 mil plus might get him... good back up plan if we strike out on Hibbert or bad?  Might take 12 mil to get him but Nuggets are in tight spot it sounds.

twitter is not a solid source or Nash would be playing for the Knicks not the Lakers...

Batum is letting FA play out and most likely unless its crazy big we will match

    this twitter quote is bs
Nic Batum does not want to return to the Portland Trail Blazers “under any circumstances for a variety of reasons,” according to an NBA source close to the situation.

    because:
To which Batum himself answered on twitter:
    trust me I didn’t…

let it play out before you start kicking out our 3 for goodness sakes

We will learn a lot more about Hibbert-to-PDX possibilities in 6 days, when he will hopefully sign our offer sheet right away.  Watch to see if Indiana signs any other significant contracts (B-Roy? J. Crawford?) between now and then.  If they start buying up players, it means they are letting Hibbert go.  They're tight on money.

Also, we'll know a lot about where Nic's head is at in 6 days, when he either signs Minnesota's offer sheet on the 11th (meaning he wants to go to Minn) or he waits until the 12th (gives us a chance to sign Hibbert first, then re-sign him with his Bird rights, likely means he wants to stay).  I all but guarantee that if he waits until the 12th that we will resign him.

If he does want to go to Minn though, we need to try to orchestrate a sign-and-trade for Ridnour AND Budinger.  That's one of the only ways to get fair value and make salaries match, and fulfills our needs for a vet PG and a SF replacement.

Plan C--None of this goes as planned, Blazers lose Hibbert and Batum.  Here are the interesting guys left for signing (in my opinion):

PG: Baron Davis, Mike Bibby, John Lucas, Nate Robinson
SG: (already stocked here, no need)
SF: Steve Novak, Danny Green, Gerald Green, Josh Howard
PF: J.J. Hickson (also a Bird rights situation), Lou Amundson, Troy Murphy
C: Hibbert (PLEASE), Brook Lopez (unlikely), JaVale McGee, Joel Przybilla

I've listed these in order of (my) preference.  I think Davis would be a great mentor for our young guys and would help provide some vet savvy off the bench.  Steve Novak would be an excellent (and cheap) back-up for Nic (if we keep him).  If we don't keep him, we should go after more of a scorer in one of the Greens.  Hickson would still be our best option, but he might want to be a starter.  Amundson would be a great back-up to LMA, and LMA has said he would like to play with him.  If Hibbert falls through, we max-offer Brook Lopez, probably can't get him (because Nets have more money than God), but JaVale could be a steal.  Still want Przy back as 3rd string center/mentor for the bigs.

    Thoughts?

I hear a lot about other teams doing this and that but there is nothing on the Blazers.  When we signed FA Hibbert did we put all of our eggs in one basket so we can't do anything until the 14th.  I wonder if portland and Batum have an agreement that if Batum waits until the 12th to sign then Portland will match the offer plus add another year to the package so Batum will get a 5 year contract with Portland.  If we sign Hibbert and Batum I think we will have done a decent job but if both Hibbert and Batum fall apart I think we are in for a tough season.  Right now I would bet Hibbert will go to Indiana and Batum is 50-=50 to stay with Portland.  How good is Toney Douglas?  What position does he play?

Toney Douglas is a decent PG who plays tough d and is young but his shooting has been very poor. Portland would be essentially getting back another Nolan Smith.

Good point. And as was mentioned by Alan Hahn of the MSG Network about the reports of Felton being signed and traded to NY-
Expect the Knicks to work with Felton's agent, Tony Dutt, and Felton's previous team, Portland, on a sign-and-trade deal for the free agent. Knicks could involve same foundation pieces from Nash deal (Toney Douglas, Dan Gadzuric and Jerome Jordan plus cash) and offer Felton anywhere from $4M to $6M in the first year. Deal should be amenable to Portland because Gadzuric and Jordan are non-guaranteeds and cash considerations essentially pays for Douglas' salary.

Clippers get Jamal Crawford, Chauncey Billups to agree to deals, cancels visit with Ray Allen

Crawford, an unrestricted free agent who opted out of his $5.2 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, has been offered a spot by the Clippers. He is expected to sign a three-year, $15.7 million contract, according to the executives.

Billups, who played in just 20 games last season with the Clippers before suffering a season-ending left Achilles tendon surgery, will sign a one-year deal that could be worth up to $4.3 million if he reaches bonuses, the executives said.

Toney Douglas hit nine threes in a game. Im not mad about that at all. I wouldnt mind having him around to harass Lillard in practice. Pick him up full court, half court traps, just in his face, up close and personal to see what Damian can do under pressure.

    Jason Kidd to NYK
    Via Marc Stein of ESPN
"Mavs were confident they'd close three-year, $9M deal with Kidd but after all-day deliberations w/both teams Kidd has committed to Knicks. After all-day deliberations with both teams, Jason Kidd has opted to leave Dallas and join Knicks. ESPN online link: "
So if J-Kidd really does sign with Carmelo "Wax" Anthony and Amare "Glass" Stoudemire, what does that do to the rumored Sign-and-trade with Ray Felton? Does he return to Denver behind Andre Miller? Does he sign with New York behind Kidd and Lin (assuming Knicks match Rox offer)? Maybe the Rockets?

From a Blazers perspective, I would've loved to have Kidd here to mentor Damian and Nolan. The perfect man for the job.

Not sure what it does Knicks might not match on Lin since he would destroy them on the luxury tax. I could see Felton and Kidd being the two PG's for the Knicks in ISO Melo. Plus if Dustin was correct then the deal really didn't do anything for us. Douglas and cash is far less appealing than Douglas and a draft pick.

Thabeet's definitely good for about 5-7 minutes off the bench, especially in a system that has their stuff together like OKC.

Lin is meeting with Houston, but I'm guessing NY will match. If this sign-and-trade thing goes through, Lin and Felton for the Knicks; Lillard and Douglas for the Blazers? I like Douglas, but I don't know if he's a good long-term acquisition. He's too young to give up on a starting role, and Lillard is probably the better prospect as of right now. However, if he's happy coming off the bench, Lillard/Douglas/(combo-guard)Nolan will be our set up at PG for a long time.

Hibbert and Nic are big question marks as well. We could have

    Lillard/Douglas/N. Smith
    Matthews/E. Williams/Barton
    Batum/Babbitt
    Aldridge/(still need to sign someone)
    Hibbert/Leonard

That's still a roster in progress, but it's certainly the right direction.

By the way, I think our backup PF options should be 1) JJ Hickson 2) Ilyasova or 3) Anthony Randolph. Each one can provide quality minutes. I put Randolph last because he doesn't rebound like Ilyasova and Hickson, but he might be our most viable option based on money and demand on the market.

It has potential but still looks a long way from a title contender.

Lillard has yet to prove himself so I would hard pressed to suggest he is better than Chalmers and he is no where near Westbrook right now.
I like Matthews but both DWade and Harden are miles above him.
Batum is a potential all-star but against Lebron or Durant he is meat.
LA is better than Ibaka and probably a little better than Bosh but that is not enough.
Hibbert is better than Haslem and Perkins but the combo of Hibbert and LA is not even close to enough to offset the distance between the other three positions.

The only problem is with that is you are now over the cap and do not have the ability to make significant upgrades. I do not see us able to win a title playing 39 million to LA, Hibbert and Batum and 45 if you add in Matthews. Plus those numbers will go up with the raises so potentially 50 million for 4 players in 3 seasons.

I like how you compare us to the Heat, then talk about the salary cap. lol

It takes big money to make a championship contender. I don't think the roster I posted is anywhere near a contender. It may not even be a playoff team. My point was that it's a great first step in a rebuild. It would only take a few pieces to make it a great team, and with the talent there more players would want to join the team via free agency and trades in coming years.

I would advise EVERY Blazers fan to step away from the championship idea for at least a couple more seasons. Don't set yourself up for disappointment, get excited for the future.

Portland does not have the luxury of three superstars no income tax south beach women and a recent title to lure quality veterans like Miami does so we certainly need to consider the salary cap especially considering we are still paying Roy a ton of money for the next few seasons.

So yes good foundation but I would rather be a lottery team than someone who barely makes the playoffs.

I mean no offense, but to compare each of our starters to the league's *best players* at their respective positions seems unfair to me.  Example:

"LA is better than Ibaka and....Bosh but that is not enough."

What, in your opinion, is "enough?"  The Heat won a championship with 3 superstars and a bunch of *decent* role players.  Other teams have won championships with fewer (see Dallas).  We don't need 5 top shelf players to win a title.  We need a few stars and a solid foundation of support players around them with *good chemistry, balance, and motivation* (see our 2012 draft picks).

If we have Lillard, Matthews, Batum, LMA, and Hibbert as our starting 5, we are a playoff team *now*.  Develop that mix for a couple years, groom some of the young guys (E-will, Leonard), and add a couple of role players as we start to become a more attractive/competitive place to play, and we could be championship caliber in 3 years.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that, barring significant injury problems (knocking on some wood furiously as I type this) that if we sign Hibbert and Batum to long term contracts and keep LMA around, Blazers bring home a W. Conf Championship trophy by 2016.

Plus comparing LA to Dirk is foolish. Dirk was unstoppable for Dallas because he could take the ball from the three point line and score with it. If a smaller player guarded him he could easily shoot over the top. If a big guarded him he would drive on them and draw a foul. If they doubled him he could easily kick it to Terry for three. LA is great but he needs help to get the ball in scoring position Dirk did not which is why he was able to win a title. Not to mention Dallas was the deepest team in the NBA that year playing a worse version of the Heat.

Hickson want more than what we care to spend, and would prevent the Blazers from being able to sign Hibbert with only 3-4 mil in cap space.  We had to let him go without a qualifying offer, because his cap hold was something like $5.9 mil.

Ilyasova will command starter money.  It's too much to pay for a back up to LA.  Although he can play SF, he's a PF, and it doesn't make sense unless we get rid of Batum AND fail to secure RFA Hibbert.  We can't have Hibbert and Ilyasova, because unlike Batum, we cannot exceed the cap to sign him if we secure Hibbert.  He will not be an option.

And lets not forget, we have Freeland that we can sign at the back up PF, and will come at a lower cost than all they guys you suggested.
