LMA doesnt have to be a great defender?  he has to guard love/griffin/garnett/duncan/lopez/dirk/gasol/zbo need i continue?

the rookie C i doubt will be guarding  that far out some of those can take their defender. So yes LMA needs to be a great defender to be a complete player.

Kobe is a great defender, and hes their #1 #2 #3 option on offence. LMA is at least this year our #1 and #2 option. LMA better play defence at a high level.

Kobe used to be a great defender. He is now just average with a few bursts of greatness.

LMA game is not defense. You gonna tell me thats what he is great at?? He is a great player and an offensive beast, but his defensive game can use some work. He averages less than 1 steal and 1 block per game, and he isn't asked, or hasn't been, so far to play phenomenal defense. But I would like to see Aldridge become more of a defensive presence this year for sure. I think Leonard will be a great defender, he has good natural timing on his blocks , and he is quick and powerful. I ac't wait to see them all play together. I would like to see Hickson play at the 4 position with Aldridge at the 5 position in some sets. Get them in there together as much as possible this year.

It was mentioned by Olshey when  Freeland and Hickson were signed they may be asked to play some at the 4 and the 5 postions as well. Who knows how they will mix up these players together.

LA is not a bad defender but he could use some additional strength to help deny position on the block. He does need to become more aggressive with his defensive rebounding.

Actually Jeffries has played time at SG, SF and Center, and a few years ago, was consider one of the best defenders in the league. He has bad knees now,  but should still be a good leader/asset is locker room and put in some quality minutes here and there.

That's awesome news. We will be paying him for what he can become now that McMillian isn't coaching our lame slow it down offense. I still think there is more to Batum's game once the offense gives him plays and not just standing in the corner for threes. I hope we get a coach who likes to run and play good defense.

yeah when you play phenomenal defense, you get out on fast breaks. Imagine Lillard on the fast break, or Smith , or Barton, or should I go on. And did you see some of the drives and dunks at the end of the season after Batum was given more of a green light. Batum can tear it up.

Batum's offense is fine but he needs to improve his defense significantly. He plays too far off his man and surrenders easy jumpers and gets destroyed on pick and roll. That needs to change more than any offensive changes in his game.

Yes!!!! I have been saying all along, really Aldridge is are top scorer and will never be asked to be a great defender, good yeah, but great no. So who is consistently holding it down on the D?

Batum, and Mathews are the players we have who keep the defense together. If Batum goes teams would be putting 100-110 on us every night. Plus I think myself that  Batum's offensive numbers will be better every year. I actually think he will be an ALL-Star this year.

you said here. he will never be asked to play great defence.

i simply stated he is asked to be a great defender because he matches up against x players.

then i said he better become a great defender. did i not?

Camby had LMA playing solid D for a span.. so its in him... but a happy BIG plays D just a little more.... so last year without Miller setting him up in his sweet spots, life was not so happy for LMA

Lillard dictates and cannot be pushed to the weak side...  He plays an old school pace similar to Roy and Miller... and I think LMA will get his with Lillard dictating the spots. and LMAs appreciation of running a show around him will show up on the defensive end... especially on defensive boards.

We do need to strike a fire on LMA and I think drafting a qualified quarterback was a step in the right move.

Still have not heard one suggestion on who would guard 3's if we lost Batum to future picks.. pointing out negatives without a solution is pointless

What you get in Jeffries and Price is a veteran presence at the 2 positions where we will have rookie starters, at the center and PG positions, and they are both good defenders, and can teach defensive fundamentals to all the players I would imagine, actually not a bad move, for cheap.

I'm glad Batum is back too, his only complaint with the Blazers was Mcmillans lack of plays that involved Batum showcasing his skills and driving with the ball, e wanted a team who had him more involved. Now that he is back and is going to be an every day starter, we will see a lot more from him.

Nail on the head, pball. Price and Jeffries are great pickups because neither of them demands many minutes, but they are both VERY technically sound basketball players. Jeffries has excellent post footwork and physicality (might even be able to teach LaMarcus something) that he can teach to someone with more size/athleticism/natural talent than him. Price is the same way. He has a lot of floor vision and has a great handle on the PG role, but doesn't have the diva attitude to complain about a bench role. It's just like what OKC did with Derek Fisher or Utah did with Earl Watson. They're guys that know the game better than most NBA players, but they don't have the basketball talent to put up big numbers and be all-stars. Leadership and glue, man. Love it.

He better earn his pay. We did not steal him from anyone we are going to pay him for his potential. So I guess what I am saying is, he wants to get paid like an all-star he better play like an all-star and not just when everyone is fired up. Right now he has got Carte Blanche with everyone and this is what he wanted so let him sink or swim. I do want him to succeed for the Teams sake but he will have to prove it in my eyes. Nic dont bring it every game and we all know this and the games he does bring it sometimes he disappears for half a game so that has got to stop. I suppose he was the best choice for the position the ball is in your court dont disappoint.

Ronnie Price looks like a decent pick up actually. He has played back PG for 7 seasons. All behind All-star caliber Point Guards though. He played 2 seasons in Sacramento behind Mike Bibby in his prime, and then went on to play 4 seasons with the Utah Jazz behind Deron Williams when he was tearing it up there, then went on to play last season behind Steve Nash for the Suns. so no wonder his minutes were limited. He has only averages 11.5 minutes/game for his career, though it looks like he also has played through foot and calf injuries while in Utah . He has 4 seasons with Playoff experience and played in 28 playoff games, though he only averaged 6.5 minutes/game in his playoff career, once again he was playing behind Bibby in his prime for one of those playoff appearances and the other 3 behind D will. He actually has some great Block Highlights from previous playoff games and on way taller players. Check out his block highlights on you tube when he blocked on Gasol, Luke Walton, and Pietrus. All impressive blocks for a PG especially, and he has very high basketball IQ, also good to mentor a rookie PG.

Plus from sources its sounds like Price is signing for the league vet minimum, so cheap pick up. Maybe we will still pick up Joel Pryz for the last roster spot , what you guys think, or do we have enough cap to go after Javale Mcgee still?

I'm guessing Prz will be our last guy signed, yes.

@barnettfan, I agree that we're going to need more production out of Nic if he's commanding that kind of money, but if you think of a guy's salary the entire time he's on the floor, every little mistake seems huge. Think about it this way: the team's capped out with salaries like Nic, LaMarcus and Wesley's. If those 3 guys start for us and help us be a winning team, they've basically earned their money. No team is going to play through an entire season below the salary cap. So you use all the money you're allowed to build a team that you think will win.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that despite how much I love having Przybilla on the squad, I kinda hope we don't resign him. Why? Because if we're looking for a guy to 'mentor' the younger guys and 'teach' them the NBA, then we should be looking for someone who embodies sort of what we want our guys to be aiming for.  Leonard for one is already a solid defender, needs some work on his offensive finesse and not drawing fouls, and is super athletic.  Joel P is more sedentary, also very strong defensively but picks up his share of fouls.  Maybe he's not the right guy to be teaching Meyers? I would hope for someone who can develop his offensive game more. Not sure about Freeland, but he seems to be getting plenty of experience at high levels (Spanish league, Olympics). Why bother getting another copy of the players we already have? Not sure what the plan is here or if Olshey will even decide to go after another center...but despite Joel being a fan favorite, I would have to say he's not the best final piece to the team right now.

That is not true Indiana played the entire year last year well below the cap and they were quite successful. So it can work but it is not easy to pull off as teams especially bad teams love to overpay people which eats up cap space. I fully expect Portland to play all season under the cap. We should have a few million in cap space after filling our last spot.

i wouldn't be so sure about that. pryz does some things well that are usually over looked such as setting good hard picks in the right spots. have you ever seen a bad pick? it can really hurt an offense. another thing that would be good for leonard to pick up from joel is toughness and challenging shots. from what i've seen from leonard in the summer league he looked a little slow on getting to his man before it was too late. sometimes it's better to bother a shot than to have a bad block attempt because it often leads to foul trouble.
but if you're wanting myers to be a little more offensive minded then i agree joel isn't the best candidate but pryz could still give leonard hell in practice.
i guess what i'm saying is another body in there at center couldn't hurt and if nobody is available joel is better than some scrub. it's not like he'll demand alot of minutes or anything. what's there to lose?

it's absolutely possible batum earns his money. in fact, i would even go as far as to say it's probable. i never realized how much a coach truly affected the type of play until nate was sacked. for the first few games i saw a rise in intensity. with the right coach and offensive sets batum could potentially play a much bigger role this year. i'm glad nico was sick and tired of sitting in the corner last season. maybe this will light a fire under him and you'll see a more competitive batum.

I hope we  don't keep saying that Batum better earn his money.  Since we are not saying that regarding any of our other players.  Since this is a team sport and if Batum plays with the team and the team plays well with him involved then let's all root for the team and change the focus to the team.  Personally I like the way Batum plays when he is focused and let's bring in a coach that will mobilize the talents of all our players and work on a winning attitude and result.  I think Prz could contribute to the team and would be a good addition for the next year.  He has some shortcomings but his presence would mean a lot to our young players.

When you got a rooks salary you are allowed a little slack. When you send your agent out to speak for you and he says that the coach would never let you play the way you wanted to play and you would rather sleep with the "Wolves" and that you deserve max contract. Then I say that you had better not EVER ghost in a game you have now officially made yourself thee man no more excuses,no more passive aggressiveness. You wanted it you got it, now prove it. I will dog the living crap out of him on the boards from here on out if he dont give 120 % every game. Like I said before I want him to succeed but he no longer can pout in the corner when it does not go his way.

Teams pay to play get over it he is a key piece at 23... we should be thrilled

I though our fan base had a better iq... the only think i hear is how cheap they are

James Johnson was had for a second round pick. Ak-47 still available the combination of those two would have been more than enough to handle the SF spot.

i understand batum is a player who has upside. but if he doesnt show that. "upside" under new coaching. is it still going to be nate's fault that he wasn't "utalized properly?"

personally batum is a typical euro player. soft. there are euro players out there that dont play soft. or soft ones that have flashes of "i'm going to take you and there is nothing you can do about it"

but the euro mentality isn't made to embarrass people.

look at when yao ming came into the league. reports came out that they had to tell him to dunk the ball instead of lay it in and miss. his reply. "i dont want to embarrass my opposition."

i had confidence in LMA a few years ago that he would work out his "soft-ness" when everyone wanted to get bosh or amare for LMA. now you can argue that LMA is better than both of them.

i dont have that same confidence in batum because he seems to have the mentality. "i dont want to embarrass people"
I am a fan of defence.

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
