Man you guys really need to calm down about some things..

1.batum's contract will not kill next years cap.  all we have next year is LA, Batum, WM and rookie contracts. that's why you see olshey only signing vets to 1 yr deals.

2.everything you guys are saying batum isn't worth it probably were the same saying LA wasn't worth it when he signed his max deal. the guy is 23 yrs old not 33.

3.people saying we trade for budinger and/or any other player involved in trades should look at the trade rules..you have to wait a certain amount of time before trading assests(players) that they just aquired..

Depending on if we keep our pick or not Portland will have between 3-8 million in cap space next year not exactly enough to make a huge impact but hopefully it will be enough to offer a max sign and trade for Harden.

Dan Gazudric? Jared Jeffries? Poulankandkdjtrtsdrapaloustovic? A 2016 2nd round pick? We might get a bench player after half a CENTURY.. whoopdee doo! I thought Neil said he wouldn't spend money just because he had it. So far, we have not improved our team since the draft, unless Claver and Freeland have some kind of impact. I want SOMETHING to happen!

I don't care if Batum plays for the Blazers or the Harlem frickin' Globetrotters next year, as long as this drama-fest ends soon.

I was doing backflips when I saw the Blazers were involved in a sign-and-trade. Then I read the players involved.... What are we doing if we're trading away assets for nothing? How about some pieces to go along with our new acquisitions. How about a coach? Can I get a Diet Coke for god's sake?! Something PLEASE HAPPEN!

Perspective.  3-8 million isn't enough to pickup Batum in this league....

Cap space is everything for this team right now.  We don't have the big market, we don't have a winning tradition, we don't have a great coaching staff or a great owner.  All we have to offer next season is a likely a lottery pick and awesome fans.  It's not enough to keep Batum here, and he stinks.

If we want a good player in FA next year, it's really simple.  We need money.

Don't sign this toxic offer Blazers.

Batum is not going anywhere, he will be an All-star next season I am sure, and there is no SF that we can get, that would adequately replace him. It's a waste of time to even discuss that any more.

The FA this season for us has been disappointing to say the least, though I still think Olshey is not done, and I am very happy Hickson is back.
These two spanish league players Freeland and Claver did well in the leagues they played for, if they stay healthy they may show promise, as they are both young (23,25) and have had a few productive years in the spanish league, but this in the NBA, so that we will have to wait and see.

This sign-and-trade with Felton, I'm not sure what to think of that. As horrible as Felton was last season before the all-star break, he was pretty good after the all-star break with us, and he is a vet PG. What do we get for him two career bench warmers in Gadzuric and Jeffries. One or both may be waived before the season starts. The only thing with this sign-and-trade that I see being a plus, is the 2012 2nd round pick from the knicks that we supposedly get, 22 yo Foward Kostas Papannikolaou from Greece, and the future 2nd round pick and cash considerations we supposedly get, though I haven't seen these announced.
We need a vet coach, I like Canales just not as the head coach, I am hoping he is not the answer. I had heard Olshey already offered contracts to Jerry Sloan , who declined, and Phil Jackson who I haven't heard an update on that one. So I have a feeling Olshey is  going to get a vet coach.
My vote is Shaw or Van-Gundy, at this point since Sloan already said no.

Either way Batum will be resigned because we won't just let him walk. But for those who aren't convinced he will be the answer long term, this can still be a good thing. Because as he plays this next season, he is also building himself up as a better asset that other teams will want. If we don't feel he is doing a good job, or that he doesn't want to be there, then we can trade him later this season, for way more value then we will get for him right at this moment in time. As the season moves on people will have injuries ( example already, Ginger boy Blake Griffin for the clips), or other things that will increase their need for a player of Batum's caliber.

Hawks have put Jordan Farmer on waivers. While not my first option as a back-up PG, he would be more than handy and better than a lot of the available PG's. He went alright last season playing behind Williams, and wouldn't cost a lot to bring in. Wouldn't mind them making him an offer.

think of it like this guys, if we traded and lets say we got williams, or even the three future first round picks. Batum has at least proven he is a very good player, worth a lot in this league that doesn't have a whole lot of great/young SF's. His trade value in 3 yrs, even if he plays the same and just scores 4 ppg more, will be so high. Williams hasn't proven his worth will be that high at all yet. Assetts, in Olshey's mind, are what we need to aqcuire, AKA trade bait, look at our depth right now, depth like that is actually very good. So take it easy before we slam Olshey or this years free agency, I think it's spectacular for a great plan and future.

I Like the moves made by Olshey, I think we've done a good job so far with FA. Sure we didn't get our "Plan A", but rarely do anyway. Seems like we're just going to let our young guys play this season and I am okay with that. I am loving the chemistry I see within this team so far, and am excited just to watch a good hard-working team again.

    Excited about our current line-up:

    PG- Lillard/Nolan
    G- Wes/E-Will
    SF- Batum/Claver
    PF- LA/JJ
    C- Freeland/Meyers

    Bench: SF/G-Barton, SF/PF-Babbit, SF/PF-Jeffries
    Reserves: C-Gadzuric, G-Diebler?

I would have loved for the Blazers to have gone after Patty Mills in FA, would have filled that final PG spot, as-well as been a great locker room addition, fan favorite, and potential starter if Lillard isn't ready in time of season start, etc.

Not sure if we're keeping Gadzuric, but might as well if he's cheap and can be a healthy body for 3rd string and practice for Meyers.

What do you guys think we should do with the 15th spot? So far Diebler has made some nice shots in SL, shall we give it to him, or do ya'll think we should try and bring over either Kostas or Georgios from Greece? Maybe chase another FA even? D-League? Other Options?

Was there any indication what years those picks could be taken?

That deal sounds excellent on the surface, but we just acquired a 2016 second rounder, and those two first-rounders could've been similar. The problem with trading for picks is that you delay improving your team at least one more year. If the first rounders were for (for imagination's sake) 2014 and 2016, that means we wouldn't even see the benefit of this trade until LaMarcus was 31. I think that's why Olshey didn't want to make a deal. He doesn't want to keep a mediocre team and end up with potential good players when all our stars are past their prime. He's building a group of guys that can play together for several years.

I'm still learning the intricacies of basketball off the court. Does lottery protected mean top-3 or top-14? And if we did trade Batum to Minnesota and they made the playoffs in 2013 would they even get a first round pick, and if they did would it be high enough to be worth anything? $11.6 million a year is a tough pill to swallow, but Minnesota clearly thinks he's worth it and the Blazers must agree. That or Paul Allen is just too stubborn to give Minnesota what they want no matter what it costs him.

@Austin  Carnes- I think its a little bit of both as far as Paul Allen, stubborn and he likes Batum too. But with the lottery-protected it means the best pick the Blazers could get is a 6 overall or higher. Because the first 5 picks  are "Lottery-protected picks". The 5 worst teams in each conference get a lottery pick, and the NBA have a lottery to decide the order of the first 5 picks. Thats is why they are called lottery picks.

Aren't the top 3 picks the only ones decided by the lottery? But the top 14 picks are the lottery so I'm pretty sure that if it was lottery protected it would be through the 14th pick. This means we would be getting Williams and 2 mediocre players from the draft. Picks are nice but i don't think we need more mid draft rookies on this team. I think we are looking at chasing a big free agent in the coming years.

The Blazers I think have already said they will waive Gadzuric, so we will likely have 2 roster spot, I think Diebler could get one of them. But who else?
I think if we could convince either of those greek players that we just got draft rights to, to come over and play for the Blazers, that would be great. They both look promising.
Gergios "Air" Printezis, I guess they call him in Greece. He is 27 yo and is a 6' 9" 235 lbs PF, he was drafted in 2007 by the Spurs 58th overall in 2nd round. He can't come over until like 2014-2015 season.but he looks promising.
And Kostas Papinikolaou is 21 yo and was drafted 48 overall in the 2nd round of 2012 draft by the knicks, he looks very promising too. He is 6'8" 225 lbs and plays SF, but he can't come over until 2013-2014 season earliest I guess, and that would be with a  buy out. But promising prospects for the future, and a future 2nd round pick, as well as a utility bench vet in Jared Jeffries, is pretty good for old Thomas, and Felton who never played well here.

If a team doesn't make the playoffs they are a lottery team. The first 14 picks are lottery picks. All 14 teams have a chance at 1st, however after the 3rd to last place team, the chances are very slim.

I still think Olshey is crazy for not making that deal, even if the picks were protected we would still get them, at some point and to get D Williams, come on.

Portland is now stuck for 3-4 years with what they have right now if they resign Batum. In 2 years when this new CBA takes affect we would have had tons of manuverability to sign FA's while nearly all other teams caps were full or over. Now we will be right with everyone else.

Keep in mind that big name or game changing free agents dont find out Liquid Sunshine State appealing. So it really doesnt matter about cap flexibility. the only way to ever change that is to put a recognizable name in a decision making position. Someone like... lets say..... Phil " 11 Rings " Jackson. Just a thought. This morning i read an article or a tweet, i forget, but something about maneuvering to get Wilson Chandler. That cat is someone i would swap Batum for immediately. Nothing less than a guy like that will do.

I think they do not find our 11% state income tax appealing.

But the point is if you can't get free agents to sign here then you have to build through the draft. You can't build through the draft without picks.

True you can't build without picks. But if you really plan to build through the draft, you need lottery picks. Lottery and Top-20 protected picks land you a bunch of Nolan Smiths and Luke Babbitts. Role players. You don't build a championship team by loading your roster with mid/late first round talent.

    Guarding 2-3 players

You know guys like Lebron, Kobe, Melo, Durant, you get the point.... who do we sign to guard these players....  Batum is sought after because he can stroke the 3 and guard....  We would get torched at the 3 if we lost Batum on D

So we trade for picks.... who is going to guard Lebron?  anybody?

Batum can't guard Lebron, the only way to slow Lebron is to get physical without fouling forcing him to take jumpers instead of layups Batum is not physical in the least.

The way to guard LeBron is to force him into our shot blockers. Like Walton was so fond of saying, you cant stop a good player, you can only hope to contain him.

The point wasn't stopping Lebron, that would be silly... but someone still needs to guard him... that is usually #88's assignment, the point was if not Batum who?

If we loose him who guards Harden let alone Durant??...  I still haven't heard any suggestions.... would you sign someone?  then who? or who on the current roster you would use to defend power 3's like Melo or the power 2's like Kobe or use him on point guards similiar to how Grant Hill was used on Miller.  Batum at 23 is a very versatile defender

so who we going to sign to guard threes??  Claver? Babbitt? haah no fricken way Batum is key piece I'm surprised to see how many people get this

nba value:  hit the three and defend.. great teams need this ingredient in their formulas don't underestimate his value we scored in getting him back

so who is going to guard the 3's?

@Licious: You bring up a point that I hadn't have even thought about...we def need him and Wes to keep up our defense for sure. Meyers and Freeland are bound to get endless "rookie" foul calls, so what other defenders do we have? Other than potential in Barton or E-Will, I don't see much else. Surely Lillard will have some effect, however, with size, etc. he won't be able to guard the 3 position.

And ya'll need to stop hatin' so much on the Batum "trade", among others. We got rid of Raymond, who didn't want to play and brought nothing in trade talk last season and Thomas who barely even played, let alone would have been a role player this year. Sure his locker room presence will be missed, and at best could have put up a few points a night. We def got a huge deal in the 2 Greek stars in Kostas and Georgious, as-well as a future 2nd rounder and cash, that will help us pay for Jeffries to ride pine and give us a few Vet minutes that we woulda got from Thomas. So...really, ya'll are upset that we didn't get 3 draft picks, when realistically we just did, but not for Batum, we got them for a busted ass Thomas, and a waste of space in Felton.

For once just understand overseas talent, and don't bock at the names just 'cause you can't pronounce them. Nicolas Batum....international player. Did people wonder about him? Do they still struggle to pronounce his name? Thank you.

Yes!!!! I have been saying all along, really Aldridge is are top scorer and will never be asked to be a great defender, good yeah, but great no. So who is consistently holding it down on the D?
Batum, and Mathews are the players we have who keep the defense together. If Batum goes teams would be putting 100-110 on us every night. Plus I think myself that  Batum's offensive numbers will be better every year. I actually think he will be an ALL-Star this year.
I am a fan of Blazers making the playoffs in 2012, and developing young talent.

Paul Allen said how do we get better?  I see no activity in the draft with no draft picks.  The trade possibilities are limited because of the value of our bench players.  We have no cap space.  So I think the improvement of our b...

First Game starts tonight. Houston is a tough first round opponent and they play exceptionally well at home. If we can steal a game or two at their place, I feel like we have extremely good chances.

P.S. Would anybody happen to have a...

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Thank God they are 19 games over 500.  Mayb...

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
