I say bring in Barnes and PJ3 together and watch Jones blow Barnes out of discussion for the #6, if that's possible. I don't know if the scouting schedule is set. I am so happy with any combination of Lillard, Drummond, and PJ3. I wasn't a Lillard believer until I saw his workout video. Draft Jones to take Roy's old duties. He is the one man in the draft that can do it, although more like a Durant or Dirk, and he's tall enough, long enough, and quick enough to guard those guys which is something we really need. Drummond, defensive presence. Here are my 3 favorite scenarios. All have a mixture of height, veteran presence, and youth. Though all are pretty unlikely occurences. I think all three are good for a 4 to 7 seed in the west. If you get PJ3 you play him sf and make him a #1 scoring option from the beginning. Force him to push himself. What's your favorite version here? Others? Hate these choices? Let me know. I can't help but obsess over this wonderful psition that Portland is in. ---- My 3rd favorite option, most likely: Nash, Lillard (play them like Kidd and Terry) Mathews, McGrady Batum, Babbit Aldridge, Hickson Dummond, Pryz ---- 2nd favorite option: Nash, Mathews, McGrady PJ3, Batum Aldridge, Hickson Drummond, Pry (Trade Batum mid season when a desperate team is looking for a sf like Boston did for Green and sent Perkins. May need to trade #11, #40, #41 up to #8/9 to get pj3, maybe even mathews but we need a big and a game changer) ---- My favorite option: Nash McGrady, Mathews (sent for Howard if necessary) PJ3 (Batum: sent for Howard) Aldridge (hickson: sent for Howard) Howard (11, 40, 41, 2013 1st rd pick, 2013 2nd rd pick: sent for Howard)

Don't trade for a pg. That's all that's available in free agency. Lin, D-Will, Dj augustin, Nash, Brooks, Dragic, Kidd and Terry. Any of those (particulary first 6, hopefully first 4) would be excellent.

I think with Olshey on board the blazers can go all out in free agency and not hurt their future. Start with drafting drummond with the 6th pick if available and somehow draft lillard as well, it may mean moving up a couple spots by trading our second round picks but it defiantly is possible. With those two guys on board bring in Steve Nash for around 10mil, Kevin Garnett for around 12mil and possibly a vet. wing such as nash's friend grant hill to finish up the cap space all for 3-4 years. Hopefully Batum can hold out long enough for us to get this done and match the contract he gets going over the cap and maybe keep hickson if not to much
    2012 lineup
    pg- Nash, Lillard, Smith
    Sg- Mathews, Williams, Hill
    sf-Batum, Hill, Babbitt
    Pf-LA, hickson, craig smith
    c- KG, Drummond, Thomas
Obviously this is best case scenario but it would be a team that would compete not only next year but with nash, kg and hill helping out our young guys could be really dangerous in a few years. Thoughts?

The aging veteran route has never really worked for Portland. Spending our salary cap for Garnett,Nash,Kidd,Allen who are going to be 37,39,40,37  respectivly next year.Maybe if we had a good core team BUT we have only one guy that we know for sure is going to stay and even that is up to debate. Aging veterans are a good idea if you just need that final piece to make a run for the championship the next year and I think realistically that is probably got the same odds as us netting the #1 pick this year. Whether we like it or not we have to rebuild and I think we should address the problem as such. On the upside our down time SHOULD be quite limited due to cap space and draft picks. We are all like kids in the candystore right now with a pocket full of money and no adults. I say let us build something that will last for years that fate robbed from us with injuries.

I dont think getting Nash and Garnett and maybe hill is hurting our future at but increasing the potential. We are not going to get young all stars in free agency, Garnett is a stretch but if boston decides to rebuild we could be a good option. we give them all 3-4 year deals to groom our young guys ie: nash-lillard, hill-batum,mathews, KG-Drummond, LA. Then in a couple years when their contracts are up we have a starting 5 of lillard, mathews, batum, LA, and drummond and possibly some cap space to fill in needs.

Rob as I mentioned in my other thread taking Nash, Garnett and Hill is a good idea. But I think your plan is a little off Nash, Garnett, and Hill should receive no more than a 2 year offer with a 3rd year team option or a non guaranteed third season. Anything beyond that and your locking up around 22 million in cap space beyond our championship window.

Also Rob your scenario would not work cap wise Drummond would add 3 million and Lillard would add 2.4 milion. Add that to LA, Babbitt, E. Williams, S. Williams, K. Thomas, N. Smith and your looking at 35 million
Now add in Nash at 10 and Garnett at 12 and your up to 57. If you give JJ the mid level exception the team is up 62 and 64 if you sign hill for the 2 million exception. Add in at least 9 million to resign Batum and your up to 73 million add in Craig for the minimum and a second round pick also at the minimum and your look at a team salary of 75 million.

Your team is now 17 million over the cap and worst of all it is 4 million over the luxury tax.

In most mocks I've read, at least 7 of the first 10 picks in this years draft are frosh...teenagers.  LaMarcus and his window cannot wait for a 19-year old kid to develop...move 'em both

If we can get Beal and Lillard with #6 and #11 then we must keep the picks if all we got to choose from is Tyler Zeller and Jared Sullinger trade them as fast as possible.

WE MUST KEEP OUR PICKS...........WE HAVE TO CONTINUE TO DO WHAT BROUGHT US BACK IN THE PLAYOFF PICTURE OVER THE YEARS......AND THATS THROUGH THE DRAFT AND DRAFT DAY TRADES FOR OTHER PICKS........WE CAN USE FREE AGENCY TO GET A PURE PG AND PUT TOGETHER ROLE PLAYERS AROUND ALDRIDGE,BATUM,AND WESLEY MATTHEWS.....AS FOR THE DRAFT.....WE TAKE CENTER FAB MELO FROM SYRACUSE AT #6 OR CENTER/FORWARD ARNETT MOULTRIE FROM MISSISSIPPI STATE......BOTH BIG MEN ARE VERY GOOD SCORERS WITH BACK TO THE BASKET....A MUST HAVE AT THE MIDDLE NEXT TO ALDRIDGE.....AND TAKE SF MOE HARKLESS OUT OF ST. JOHNS.....A GREAT BACKUP SF FOR BATUM.....CAN DEFEND THE PERIMETER LIKE BATUM.....BETTER OFFENSIVE SPARK OFF THE BENCH AT THE POSITION...CAN ATTACK THE RIM AND VERY GOOD AT GETTING TO FREE THROW LINE.....LUKE BABBIT AND NOLAN SMITH ARE BOTH ROTATION READY FOR THIS TEAM.......THE SECOND ROUND....YOU GO PERIMETER PLAYERS AT THE POING AND SHOOTING GUARDS RESPECTIVELY..........GO BLAZERS!!!!!!.........RIP CITY  EAST REPRESENTING TRAIL BLAZER PRIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we could come out of the draft and free agency with a team that looks like:

    Dragic PG     Smith

    Mathews SG  E Williams

    Batum SF     Barnes

    Pryz C         Drummond/zeller/Meyers one of

    LA PF          JJ

This would be a decent team to go forward with

I am sick of decent teams Portland either needs to be great or terrible. After this off-season if Batum and JJ are maintained and we bring in a couple free agents Portland will not have any cap room for at least 4 seasons. With that is consideration Portland needs to build a team that can become a contender. @Ricky what you described is an 6th seed at best. If Elliot, Barnes or one of the bigs fails to develop then your looking at team likely to miss the playoffs and that is not acceptable.

Portland needs to let the draft come to them because of how deep this class is. if Drummond is still on the board at 6 they have to draft him. LA needs a true C because he hates to bang down low when Portland plays him at the 5. With the 11th pick the Blazers should take either Rivers or Waiters whoever is higher on their board. I think the Blazers are in love with PG Damian Lilliard but there is no way he is still on the board at 11 but they could easily pick him here.

Portland should have close to 20 million to spend in FA and they have to re-sign Batum no matter what and they have the money to do so. Steve Nash would fit perfect on this team with his excellent shooting. I would love for the Blazers to sign Derron Williams but I just don't think they will have the money to give him the max contract that he will sign but he is close with LA and Paul Allen could throw a ton of cash at Williams if he thinks the Blazers have a shot.

If I was the GM I would see what it would take to get Kyle Lowry from Houston because he might be the best defensive PG in the game not to mention his improved shooting. Lowry would have made the all star team had he not got hurt.

Ok honestly people, stop with the Nash and Deron Williams talk. Nash is a great player but is much too old to be spending the money he will demand. Nash is a quick fix for a championship contender and that is certainly not us this coming year. Williams is not a winner and will not get us to where we will want to be either. Look towards the future, not one or two years down the road.

Nash would also make sure Portland is a playoff team and would be a great mentor for any young PG we draft that would make him worth every bit of 10 million a season.

FA is so risky to depend on and you don't win without a point guard or someone who can dominate the ball during key game moments.....  all of sudden fa point guards tiers start to run.... D Will signs with Dallas and Dragic re-signs with Houston then we end up with settling for mid level pg... but if we could get someone like Nash that will groom a young point guard for a few years, then I think it makes sense if we can't hit a home run with a long term solution like D WIll or Dragic

and draft the best pg prospect in the draft and groom him

Nash and Lillard seem to make sense for this team right now if we want to make the playoffs... let Lillard learn pick and roll from Nash and LMA and we could go small ball too at times.   Someone mentioned Nash and playoffs...  LMA could pick up where he left of with Miller and continue his pick and roll knowledge with Nash and Lillard could learn from one of the games best.

We still need to add a few Bigs but the back court would be strong and efficient in closing out games with Nash running the show

Nash almost got a team with the second best player being Marcin Gortat to the playoffs give him an all star in LA and someone like Batum and the playoffs would pretty much be a certainty barring injury.

No Zeller we need someone who will play tough defense and bang. Zeller will get a few rebounds but he foul prone and gives up post position easily to stronger bigs.

Looks like we're keeping both picks from everything that Olshey said during Monday's Pre-Draft Workout and Andy Katz relayed that sentiment on the ESPNU draft special last night.
