@ cmeese47...agree with you.  Remember, potential is simply UNREALIZED TALENT.  Having the word "potential" linked to your name in ANY profession for as many years as it has been now for 23 year old Nic Batum is NOT a good thing.  We are in agreement here.  Buy low and SELL HIGH.  I believe that the Blazers may use another team's higher offer to simply let Nic go, and would be wise to do so.  Public Relations 101, given his popularity locally.

My bottom line is and always has been this...Statistics aside, Batum has not demonstrated the ability to be consistently impactful while on the floor and has had ample opportunity.  He is a sports car without a motor.  Looks pretty sittin' in the garage, but he ain't gonna take ya anywhere.

i like batum, but i dont think he is worth it..... we could get harrison barnes and he would not get paid as much as batum! and i think that barnes is better...... @BDawg, i agree he hasnt proven himself that he can do something on the floor. and we need someone to prove themselves. We are running out of time to find another playmaker to go aong with aldridge!

zkelly makes a good point. Batum is a nice player, but is he $10 million nice? I don't think he's there, yet. And that's the key word, yet. How much longer do we wait on Nic? We've been waiting for him to tap into his seemingly endless reservoir of potential for four years now but all we've been getting are minimal improvements and the same problems (passiveness) keep lingering around. I mean, if they did decide to pass on matching Batum's contract, there are SF options in the draft (MKG, Barnes) or you can slide EWill over there for short periods of time. We've got a lot of money to spend this summer and we need to spend if wisely because there is a ton of talent for sale.

Dang...you guys are crazy! Either you have lost it or you don't watch a lot of basketball. Is there a Matt Barnes in the draft? You know his stats for his career? 7 ppg; 4.4 rpg and very minimal everything else. Nicolas has been hurt quite a bit and don't forget that he also was not really given an opportunity to shine under Nate. If you look at the stats given from last season in comparison to this season, it's very difficult to say that he has made minimal improvements. And move Ewill to the shooting forward position? He hasn't proven that he has been able to play either! All I'm saying is that we put this problem on ourselves when we kept Nate in as coach for so long and followed the game plan of watching the Brandon Roy show. No one progressed until we stopped leaning on Brandon and expected more out of our players. Let Batum thrive and he will flourish. He has shown his capabilities throughout the season.

He was referring to Harrison Barnes not Matt Barnes and while Nico might get better I think he has quite a ways to go to earn 11 million a season. He is a 7 million dollar a year player right now. If he gets 15% better each year, which is a lot he would not actually earn that salary until year 4, not exactly a great return on your investment. If he only gets 10% better each season then he is worth 9.5 million during year 4 and you over paid by around 10 million over 4 years.

Ben Gordon on the Pistons is gonna get 10 mill, would you rather have him?

Batum is worth 10 bills, you look around the league, talent at the SF position is an absolute must on the league's best teams. Batum gonna get paid, like it or not.

Peyton Manning when asked what he was going to do with his rookie signing bonus said "earn it".

He's a winner.  Batum is a whiner.  He and his agent have done nothing but bitch and make excuses about why he plays as badly as he does.  "Like it or not" is not how to run an NBA franchise.  Please Blazers don't tie another boat anchor to a ship that's already sunk.

I'm glad somebody mentioned EWill.  If had not gotten hurt, this conversation would not even be happening.  Batum and all his wasted athleticism would be completely overshadowed by another young player with better athleticism and the stones to actually play in this league.  He's hungry and fearless.  Everything that Batum is not.

Great comments about E-Will, but man alive, I've never heard Batum complain about anything in his young career here. Batum is a true pro, always looking to get better, and inspire his teammates to get better.

Shopping Batum will not be easy teams will need to believe that we seriously will do whatever it takes to resign him rather than losing him for nothing. If we can get someone to give us a 1st round pick for Batum then we have to take it.

My thing with getting young talent to replace Batum is that Batum is already young! I would be fine with trading him away for something in return but to just let him go like that...I don't agree. Though who cares what I say right?

My opinion, Batum isnt worth 10 mill. Give him a 5 year- 40-45 million. He is a solid player. And can and will, be a part of the rebuilding process. Only problem is, he hasn't proved that he is worth that much, yet. But, I believe in Batum. Give it to him.

Another option, is let Batum, test free agent waters, and match whatever offer comes this way. Unless, it is like 12 mill or more a year on him. Just my opinion....

after some deep thought, is thinking about this all wrong- we can go after stars- we can get our william or gordon and whoever else we want- once we hit the salary cap and someone offers batum more than 5 mil, we can match however the amount they offer, we can
cheat" our way to the top- example when this is better- a lineup of williams gordon cj miles LA and kayman would totally fill our cap and we can not get the best bench players- however say we take a deeper team- offer batum 5.4 mil, then a cj miles williams kayman LA, then on top of that we get our jj our bench c, and other quality guys to come off the bench, then if batum wants 10 mil, its perfectly  ok, because we are aloud to go over the cap for him if we have offers to other guys, just makes more sense to me to have batum - not saying batum is greater than gorden, he isnt- but the abuility to get batum for 10 mil "5 over the cap"  and still be able to afford a bench  is more valuable (right bench is better than your 3 option on ur team in my opinion)

Here's what Chad Buchanan said during a radio interview on 1080 The Fan (transcribe courtesy of Blazersedge)

It appears the Blazers have a ceiling price for Batum this summer-
"There's a certain threshold you're always going to have in the back of your mind. I'm not going to reveal it. Part of it is going to depend on how our cap room situation plays out. That might determine, that might dictate our threshold to a certain degree as well. We love Nic as a player, we drafted him because we believe in him. He's been a valuable contributor for us these for these last few years. We still believe in him long-term. Ultimately it will be a business decision at the end of the day but I would say that from a basketball standpoint we really believe in Nic long-term and hope to have him around for quite awhile."
And the benefits on not getting an extension done during the season are-
"Part of the reason why we didn't come to an early agreement with Nic on his extension back in January, part of it is finding a number that both sides are comfortable with but also by not doing an early extension with Nic his cap hold is $5.4 million that sits on our books heading into free agency as opposed to whatever the extension number would have been at. It does allow us a little more cap room heading into free agency but we're allowed to go over the cap to re-sign our own player because we have Nic's Bird rights. There was benefits to not getting a deal done early. We'd have liked to have done it, Nic would have liked to do it too, but the numbers didn't match up on both ends. We can still spend our cap room and match an offer and go over the cap this summer as long as we're comfortable with the number on Nic and still retain him."

Heres what Batum had to say today.....

San Antonio is an option for me. There are 30 NBA teams, so I'm going to look at everything and see who's best. But it's clear that San Antonio is not a bad option. I don't want to leave Portland, but I'm going to look at everything and see what's best for me.

If I can't find something better elsewhere, I'll stay in Portland. But if I find something better elsewhere, I'll leave. The market opens July 1, so I really have the time to take my time and look at everything out there. I have about 10 teams in mind already (as possible destinations) but we'll have to see what happens.

By "better" he means money?  I don't think he's going to find another team or fan base willing to blow sunshine and rainbows up his backside in exchange for 4 years of uninspiring and mediocre play.  Batum should take the opportunity at this point in his career to get the biggest contract he can, because I guarantee this will be the biggest contract he will ever get.  I'd love to see this self-entitled wanker go to any large market like LA, NY etc. where fans boo their own players pretty much nightly and see if he still thinks he's worth more than 7.5 mil.

Batum and his agent need to tread lightly here. If they want to go out and sign the first lucrative offer, that's fine. But what happens when that team is the Raptors and the price is too expensive for Portland's taste? Now Batum would be stuck with the bottom-feeding Raps. He and his agent shouldn't just assume that Portland is going to match.

Nate's "go stand in the corner" offense basically negated Nic's abilities, to what degree though, none of us really know.  I DO believe Nic is better right now than what we've seen because of the offense he found himself handcuffed in.  For me, this argument has far more validity than does anything involving the word potential.  That said, I still maintain that Nico lacks the motor to be the all-star some claim he'll be.  A good player for years to come?  Sure.  An all-star and player commanding the lettuce his agent is barking for?  No.  I would like to see Nic in an uptempo style offense, similar to that of say, a D'antoni offense.

I bet we see some passion out of Nico in the Olympics then it will be back to the same passive player once he returns to the NBA.

If Nico played with half the heart and effort as Gerald Wallace he would be the next Lebron James and we would giving him a max deal. But his effort is more like the local fat man at the gym short bursts off effort and skill followed by minutes off standing still.

Funny I do not ever remember him being that player. He was closest in the 37 games he played in 09 which were his only season at 50% shooting and 40% from 3 pt range. It also was his best season from the line at .843%.

If he was still playing that way 12 would be a good deal but his is not

Batum is only 23 he is way above the curve you just have a bad taste in your mouth from the miserable point guard play last year.... only good as the quarterback... plus Nate don't get me started

He was tracking 50/40/90 with Miller is all i meant you tell his iq and effeciency was there he need to mature... also he got benched for Wallace, took it pretty well.  I hope we keep our investment.

agree to disagree I hope we sign the #3 on the market
