The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired forward Gerald Wallace from the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for center Joel Przybilla, forward Dante Cunningham, forward/center Sean Marks, a 2011 conditional first round pick acquired from New Orleans and a conditional 2013 first round pick, it was announced today by General Manager Rich Cho.
Wallace, 28, posted averages of 15.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.23 steals, 1.00 blocked shots and 39.0 minutes in 48 games (all starts) with the Bobcats this season. He scored 20 points or more 17 times and recorded 14 double-doubles.
Wallace (6-7, 220) was named to the 2010 Eastern Conference All-Star Team and the 2009-10 All-Defensive First Team. In nine-plus seasons with Charlotte and Sacramento, Wallace holds career averages of 13.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.49 steals, 0.96 blocks and 30.5 minutes in 592 games (453 starts).

    Portland Trades:
    Joel Przybilla
    Sean Marks
    Dante Cunningham
2011 New Orleans 1st Round Pick
    2013 1st Round Pick

    Portland Receives:
    Gerald Wallace

The deal finally got done. After days of speculation and rumors, Rich Cho delivers a splash for his first major trade as GM of the Trail Blazers. I hate giving up players like Joel and Dante, but sometimes you have to make the tough decision. Wallace, along with Batum and Camby will give Portland a trio of elite defenders and now Aldridge finally will be able to get some much needed rest. Playing him 40+ minutes a night will other wear him down.

So Rip City, what is it: How do you feel about this trade?

I think its a B+  not the absolute best in the world but enough to get us vastly improved.  Personally I would like to see Chris Johnson come back and get some run in the C position, he looks like he has a lot of potential.

A+ from me as well.  If this first major deal is to be the one that defines Cho as a GM, I'd say he did pretty good.  All the teams in the west making moves took a step back, with the exception of NO.  They, along with Portland, improved their product.  IMO, this deal was made with an eye on the second round.  Time to scoreboard watch, as NO and Portland will be engaging in a dog fight for the right to NOT have to face the Lakers in the first round, finishing in that 6th spot.

For those concerned about lack of depth at the 5, consider two things.  First, how many QUALITY centers are there in the west on playoff bound teams?  By quality, 5s opposing teams have to prepare for and strategize against.  Secondly, both Marks and Priz might find their way back to P'town after 30 days, if bought out.

Sweetening the deal even further?  Wallace's contract is not a long-term one.  In short, low risk < high reward = A+

Correction. Thought you said Joe Johnson. Sorry about that fallen.

Good point at the 5 spot BDawg, I don't believe the fight with NO will be as tough as it sounds. CP3 has been weak lately and clearly there is some chemistry issues with their team. If Wallace can't mesh quickly we will be fine and if he can, well, thats even better!

I have been a fan since I was in diapers I have the pictures to prove it.  I now know why we hardly ever make it to the playoffs.  I grade this as an F!!!!!  Without Joel I hope now we never make it to another playoff.  How could we.  His wife Noelle, his son Anthony, and him have been loyal to us and have worked all they could to make Portland there home.  They moved across the country to be here.  How many negative things have we heard about Roy, bot God forbid if we ever even thought about trading him, the city might come to a stand still.  What have we heard negatively about the Przybilla's?  Nothing!!!!  We don't ever deserve to even come close to going to the playoffs ever again.  To the Przybilla's, where ever you go that is my new team, I got your back.  And I have to say that I am embarrassed and ashamed of the city of portland for treating you this way.  I am so sorry.

With regard to the picks that were traded, keep in mind that the team still has international rights to players who have yet to play in the NBA namely: Petteri Kopponen, Victor Claver, and Joel Freeland.

If the team keeps on having draft picks, the roster's going to be perpetually clogged.

My focus and attention now turn to locking up Nate.  Does Wallace coming here make the Blazers a more attractive option for him?   He is, after all, the type of player Nate covets.  Isn't it possible this deal netted the Blazers Wallace AND Nate?  Yet another reason for high marks.

Looking forward to seeing GW and Dre on the floor together, igniting the break.  This Blazer team is going to be fast.

    Welcome Gerald!

There are prices to pay for victory.
And idk if you knew, but Joel and his wife had talked frequently about retirement, like she wanted it for him kind of vibe.
Not to mention Joel has no offensive skill what so ever. If anything feel for Marks, he gets traded just to be waived in 3-4 days. ouch!
Joel has played 31 games this season, 9 started. 1.8 pts 3.4 rbds.
Cunningham had avgs 5.1 pts with 3.4? rpg

where as wallace has a whopping 15ppg and 8.2 rpg
You should be nice to Wallace, he is finna help this team win a championship
    thats a total steal....

You do realize that Joel can be bought out and Portland could bring him back after 30 days right? Also if I'm not mistaken, he's going to be a free agent next summer so we can pick him up then as well. I have much love for the Vanilla Gorilla too and I sure hope we bring him back to Portland where he belongs. He brings a kind of toughness to this team that no one else can bring. I'm going to miss Cunningham as well. But, let's be honest.. you have a chance to get Gerald Wallace without giving up any of our core pieces, you do it.

My wife says, Ditto for her. For me I love me some Joel, but I don't know what he can or will bring in the future and it is Cho's job to give us the best players he can get.

It is My opinion that Joel's contract will be bought out and in 30 days will be a Blazer again. Well may that is my hope more then my opinion.
You were a Blazer fan since diaper years and I probably have been a Blazer fan since your Dad and Mom's diaper years. Therefore, I am used to letting go of my players and have found out that it is not the end of the world. I was madder then a wet hornet when Outlaw was traded even if I knew it was for the betterment of the team.

I gave this a B+. because I don't know all the facts, but I do believe it is to the beterment of the team.

Gerald is a multi-tool player. He can board, block, dunk, dribble, pass and shoot. MJ did good in making Cho give up half our bench for his All-Star, but Gerald is exactly the right player to perform on this team.

My only question is...is Chris Johnson gonna get another short term contract to fill the void at reserve Center? This trade did take a chunk outta our tall guys, and I liked what we saw outta Johnson in his previous 10 day contract.

in this game of basketball(nba mostly) there is no time for emotional attachments... im sorry but priz was on his last run ...  if someone offered you a a used ferrari for a beat up cadilac with tons of mileage on it, do u mean to tell me u rather keep the beat up caddy? lol... no way u always take the best deal u can get on the table... this without a doubt puts us up there with the top teams in the west.... if we didn't trade priz then who camby?  u rather keep keep priz over roy? .. come on its common sense this deal was needed to give us that extra push for the rest of the season not to mention GERALD WALLACE WANTED TO BE A BLAZER!!! so with that said.... Brookelyn... WOW on the bitterness level.   As a Blazer fan, I am all for improvement.  It's sad when a Favorite goes but bottom line, it’s business.  Follow your favorites, you should… I do (Joel included).  But as a Blazer Fan, I will support my team as they reach for a ring.   There’s more here than one player.

I wish Joel, Dante and Sean luck and sincere thanks for their contribution.  In regard Gerald Wallace, I look forward to seeing him ball in the Red and Black.

@Brooklyn: Everyone who is a Blazer fan hopes that Joel finds a way to finish his career as a Blazer. The dude bleed and sweated for us. In the end though you have to do what is right for the team. I hope Joel is a Blazer in a month but I accept that the team is better now. It is a family here. That is why people get all butt-hurt, but to be a team that WINS.... you have to make hard choices. You have to decide that talent and quality might be as important or more important than loyalty.

If we only operated on loyalty there would be many players that would have retired a blazer: R Wallace, I Rider, T Outlaw, Q Woods... etc....

My point is that you have to make a choice. Do you want to be loyal and drive your team into the dirt whether or not they are competitive or not? Or do you want to take a chance to improve your team? In businesses you have to make the hard choices. If you stand pat you will be left behind in this league.

Kudos to Paul Allen and Cho. Good job. Hope we can resign Joel.

I believe since Joel is going to retire soon, he was more then happy with doing what he could do for the blazers before he could go. Otherwise he retires and we get nothing for him. See it as Joels thank you to the blazers and their fans. Also fingers crossed that we buy him out in 30 days!

@HG - well put.  I also went B+ on this, as it leaves us vulnerable for the 2nd half of the season at the 5 and that 2nd draft pick might not have been in the mix if this trade had gone down earlier.  Guys like Joel, Sean Marks and Dante will definitely be missed, as they were all classy, hard working players.  But like almost everyone here seems to agree - they aren't the type of player who can substantially affect a Playoff series.

Overall great move by Cho (woulda been an A without that 2nd draft pick)

The fundamental question is "does this make the Blazers a more competitive team?".

My answer is yes.  A much tougher team, a better rebounding team, and a team that will be more entertaining to watch.  My guess is that once the fans get a chance to see Gerald Wallace in a Blazer uniform for a few games, he will quickly become one of the most popular players on the team.  A great move.

No you obviously don't know what you are talking about. Rasheed was a jerk (mod-edit, language.  Keep it clean!), he didn't even like Portland HE himself wanted to leave and the other players on that list are or were nobody. If we kept them we would still be the jail blazers with exception to outlaw. And who is our back-up big men? Can you name one.

Wallace might start at 3, La at 4 and Camby at 5, when fit.
When Batum comes in at 3, Wallace to 4 and LA to 5 meaning we play small.

Brookelyn, if that's how you're going to be, then I have to say - we don't want you as a fan anyway.  Seriously, wishing for us to not make the playoffs?  You may have been a fan since you were a baby, but you don't understand that the NBA is a business.  Joel had an expiring contract, so we had to move him, especially for someone like Wallace.  He's a great guy and I'm going to miss him out on the floor a lot, but he's a role player and role players (especially those with expiring contracts) get moved around a lot.  We've been fortunate to have him as long as we did.  As for trading Roy, he's exactly the opposite - a big contract that no one wants to take on, especially with his unsure future about his knees.

Anyway, if you really think I don't care about Joel being traded, here's what I posted on his Facebook wall:

The worst part about being a fan of a sports team is getting too attached to players who not only work hard on the court, but are also great people off the court. Joel, you are one of those people. It's hard to remember that the NBA is a business, but that's what you've got to do. Good luck in Charlotte...as Joel Jenck (a guy who had posted before me on Joel's wall) said, you will be getting a standing ovation on March 5th. Unfortunately, I won't be there, but I know the rest of the crowd will give you one. If you don't retire after the season, we'd love to see you back in Portland for maybe one more year before you hang it up? We all love ya, big guy!

Its easy to look back now and say G.O. was a bad idea. But It is rare to find a 5 with the calliber of a player Oden is. There are what...3 other true centers in the entire league that plays up to his level? I can give you a massive list of good guards. Take into consideration, there is no way we could see Oden would of been out for as long as he has been and Durant would have been leading scorer in the NBA.

Fantastic trade. The possibilities are endless. There's a lot of mix and match that Nate can work with. To the extent that Batum can guard the opposing PG, consider for short durations, a line-up of Camby, Aldridge, Wallace, Batum and Roy -- would give opponents all kinds of size problems on both ends of the floor. Very exciting.

Michael Jordan is a terrible GM. HAHAHA this trade is AMAZING for the blazers. They honestly may be the most deep team in the nba. Our bench look pretty damn solid.

Not sure what Rich Cho accomplishes here. Gerald Wallace is a tremendous player at his position but he is only a three, not a four, and after (reportedly) four concussions, is reluctant to play that postion. Without Joel or Dante, we lose inside toughness and scrap, not to mention Joel's ability to affect shots with his presence. Our depth at the three (along with Victor Claver whom we drafted two years ago and have yet to see) makes it very difficult for me to see how Rudy, Nicholas, and Luke get the playing time they need to produce. Not to mention the fact that we are currently without a starting center and now have shipped our backup off. With Greg Oden's contract expiring and no extension in sight, Marcus Camby turning 37, and no true backup for LaMarcus Aldridge at the four, I question the addition of another athletic three. Hell, we could have kept either Outlaw or Webster and saved ourselves some cash and Draft Picks.
I am a fan of The Sarge Nate McMillan

Paul Allen said how do we get better?  I see no activity in the draft with no draft picks.  The trade possibilities are limited because of the value of our bench players.  We have no cap space.  So I think the improvement of our b...

First Game starts tonight. Houston is a tough first round opponent and they play exceptionally well at home. If we can steal a game or two at their place, I feel like we have extremely good chances.

P.S. Would anybody happen to have a...

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
