I really hope this game was a fluke but it is clear this team is still not there yet. Lopez the great replacement for Hickson did nothing tonight. Batum rebounded well and that was about it 4 ast is okay but not with 4 to and 7 points is not okay. The great new bench looked much like the old bench Mo showed why he was available for so cheap with an awful game tonight. He will have a few more of these just need to hope it does not happen often.
Our defense is not ready yet and it is clear we have 2 all stars but the team still needs help to do more than fight for a bottom tier playoff spot.

    Thoughts?

Not a fluke. Long season my friend.

Been saying it all summer long. Jumpshots < lay-ups. Why am I working a blue collar and netting less than 6-figs? Got beat by a team tonight projected to finish at the bottom. Not just beat either.

Said it in another thread. Teams not having a post threat in the half court must score at the rim in transition. That means PLAY DEFENSE and ignite the break. Not having a player on the entire roster capable of breaking down the opposition's defense and getting to the rim with the bounce (besides the player responsible for distributing the rock and the player playing the most minutes of anyone in the league his rookie season), only magnifies this already glaring deficiency. I watched in horror tonight, a Blazer roster not built to do any of the above.

    Long season. Buckle up.

LA needs to get his butt on the block simple as that he need to control the painted area on offense. He has the same issue that Rasheed had, he is unstoppable down low but if you do not force him down there he tends to float towards the perimeter.

LA also got murdered on pick and roll tonight, the guards must fight through screens better because the Suns destroyed us on mid range jumpers and that will just continue without more effort from LA and the guards.

Also JJ had 12 pts 9 boards and 4 blks tonight

i was really mad at the defensive effort, i started punching things especially since i spent a non refundable $130 on league pass because the preseason made it seem worth it. at least its a deep draft, though im sure its a little early to tank :)

LA scored 28 points tonight. I'm happy with his offense. It's his rebounding that shocked me tonight. He said during preseason that he would grab more boards now that Lopez was in town. It looked like we were the guys looking for a shot at Andrew Wiggins. He would certainly be an improvement over the shocking offense we got from the 7 other guys who took the floor for us tonight.

I think coach Stotts will do his part to get everyone else working better in the offense but we need more from Lopez, Matthews, Batum and Mo on both ends. LA and Dame were good tonight. They need to keep their play up at that level for us to be competitive. We had 19 assists tonight. That's decent but we can be better. A few positives to take out of the game and overall, the sort of start we've come to loathe from our Blazers.

In truth, while I'm sad about the loss, I'm glad we got a bit of a reality check. Now the real grind starts. LA and the Mo/Wright combo need to rally the locker room and get to work making us genuine playoff contender.

    Welcome to the boards blzr4ever.

Just one game and just one loss. I agree. However, I would argue that the reasons for said loss are justifiably cause for significant concern moving forward.

Oh...and Miami lost to Philly tonight while the Lakers got throttled by GS, 125-94.

Dang, I guess its true that PRESEASON means NOTHING

I really thought we would come out with improved Defense and improved Rebounding. Batum kept up with his great rebounding but Lopez and LA both were weak on boards and on defense

I am hoping this will be one of our worst games this year. Nothing went according to plan except for Damian or LAs offensive game.

Terrible game, we will clean it up soon, i hope

This was an ugly one...Mo Williams was a complete no show, first qtr was horrible. Lopez had his worst game and only Dame and LA could find a bucket. LaMarcus did not rebound and Phoenix couldn't miss a shot all night. Not an encouraging opening night. I didn't understand Stotts rotations in this game and my worst fear was losing to these guys. As much as Damian scored in two stretches, he got schooled by Bledsoe.

We rebounded less because Phoenix hit most of their shots. Is it just me, or did Batum look like he was stealing rebounds? And why do all the fringe role players ALWAYS have good games against us. Goran Dragic is a good player, a decent starter, but he turns into a beast playing against us.

I am a fan of Raymond Felton. Haha, seriously though I'm a fan of Batum's Lobs and JJ's Slams.

Portlands shot chart was ugly. 6-19 from inside the paint.

PJ Tucker and Plumlee went 10-18.

As well as LA shot he needed to score on the block last night if for no other reason than to get Plumlee in foul trouble. He went 3-7 and got 5 total trips to the line.

Here is an old stat we all hated to see last year. Points in the Paint Portland 24- Phoenix 52. No wonder they shot over 50% despite going 4-19 from downtown.

Out of the 14 games everyone won at home except 2 teams, pacers won on the road and so did the thunder, point is if you play sluggish on opening night you lose, Blazers played sluggish, except DL and LA, What I want to see as this team goes forward is hustle and grind, that is what gets wins, Batum is a big disappointment scoring wise, he should be in there dominating in his 6 yr in the league, and just think of the money the blazers pay him, we need another 20 point scorer and he was supposed to be that guy, hopefully he gets the memo that he should be running the show. we'll thats 14 straight regular season losses, hope we get on a winning streak. * I think Myers should get the second center position over brit.

Portland made Plumlee the second best center in the western conference last night...if, for only a night. Scola comes to mind when speaking of consistent Blazer killers whom otherwise are fringe role players. Not playing good, hard, TEAM defense for a full 48 will make heroes from obscurity.

Here is the thing it is hard to rebound when you are far from the hoop. LA taking perimeter jumpers and guarding Frye who does the thing pulls him from the hoop. Lopez on the other hand had no excuse he just plain sucked last night.

Looking forward to seeing what a motivated Hickson does to a Portland defense that made Plumlee an all-star.  Plumlee!

Denver will be gunning, as the Trailblazers are their home opener opponent, and they too dropped their first game...also to an inferior team in SAC.  On paper, this one looks to be over before the ball gets tossed in the air.  Nuggets by 22.

Portland's schedule doesn't get any easier, as they host San Antonio in the Moda Saturday, on the second night of their first back-to-back of the season.

Portland schedule does look tough the next 3, could easily see an 0-4 start.

Then we get Sac twice a semi tough detroit game at home and then the suns again.
