With Free Agency coming to an end, teams are beginning to finally take shape. Starting out within the Division is always a good place to start. As of right now, for me, there is a clear no. 1 in the division and a clear no. 5 in the division

    1. Oklahoma City Thunder

It's hard to go against the thunder taking home another division title. They haven't signed anyone new and lost a key piece in Kevin Martin, but with Durant being the second best player in the NBA and with Russell Westbrook barely missing anytime with his injury, it looks like Oklahoma City will win the division.

    5. Utah Jazz

They lost Jefferson, Millsap, Williams, and Foye, 4 of their 5 starters. With young players like Burke, Burks, Hayward, Favors, and Kanter starting, this looks to be a rebuilding season for Utah, who I can see finishing with one of the worst records in the nba this season.

Now for the three teams in the middle, Minnesota, Denver, and us, I can see only a few game separation.

    2. Portland Trail Blazers

Call me bias with this, but I think we'll be able to capture the number 2 spot in the division, as well as capture a 7 or 8 seed in the playoffs. We addressed team needs by adding McCollum,Lopez, Robinson, and Wright, and by adding them along with LaMarcus, Damian, Wes, and Nic, we will have the ability to do well this season. There is no shortage of scoring in the lineup, as well as defense. I think we have the ability to finish next to OKC this year.

    3. Minnesota Timberwolves

I think Minnesota has the ability to be a scary team next season. With a healthy Love paired with Rubio, a healthy Budinger, as well as the additions of Corey Brewer, Kevin Martin, Gorgui Dieng and Shabazz Muhammad, Minnesota is very deep and I think will be right along with us as a 7 or 8 seed in the playoffs.

    4. Denver Nuggets

The nuggets are a bit puzzling to me. They had a great season last year, but this season could be different. They fired their coach, Lost their GM, and lost Andre Iguodala and Corey Brewer most notably. They will be without Danilo Gallinari for the majority of the season with his ACL tear, so the starting lineup looks something like this right now... PG- Ty Lawson SG- Randy Foye SF- Kenneth Faried PF- JJ Hickson C- Javale McGee ... They may switch Hickson and Wilson Chandler in the lineup and move Faried back to PF, but regardless, I don't see much of a scoring punch up and down the lineup. They did, however, pick up some decent free agents like Foye, Hickson, and Nate Robinson. Denver really doesn't have that number one guy to go to for scoring, and with Gallinari out, I think it will weigh on them much more.

    Any Division Predictions out there?

^ Hayward and Favors are going to have to be the keys for Utah this season. Kanter hasn't shown much so far in the NBA but I'm intrigued to see if he can live up to that #3 pick. Burks was a good scorer at Colorado so I'm also waiting to see if he can break out this season. As for the bench they got Brandon Rush in Golden State's cap clearing trade, but he's coming off of a gruesome injury. They also got Richard Jefferson and Andris Biedrins in the deal, and they still have Marvin Williams. I don't think they will be very good this season.

Sloane is alot like Popovich,he doesnt sugarcoat anything. Todays players {with a few exceptions} are soft mentally. Get in their face about blown assignments and they'll fold like a cheap lawn chair.

If you miss a layup on Jerry Sloan's watch or a free throw or lose your man, you're on the bench.

agreed with where the blazers would be in the division, but i think blazers can go high as no.4 in the west.

    1. spurs

    2. warriors

    3. thunders

    4. blazers

    5. clippers

    6. memphis

    7. houston

    8. t-wolves

blazers show that they can beat memphis last year, beat clippers when everyone healthy and top of their game. beat houston, and can beat up Dwight howard. expect big 60 win year by the blazers

we open the season at home against san antonio spurs. damian lillard will torch them with 65 point and 5 assist, 3 steal, and 2 block to start the historical season for the blazer. cj add 15 point and 2 assist off the bench while meyers torch duncan with 15 point and 15 rebound and 5 monster block

If you look  at the starting lineups you posted for Denver and Utah (though those aren't guaranteed) I think Utah looks better than Denver at least offensively. That Denver team wouldn't be able to score against their own shadows, and the way they've always gotten it done even before Iggy had everything to do with George Karl.

My list for the NW is

    1. OKC

    2. POR

    3. MIN

    4. UTA

    5. DEN

    For the west:

    1. SA

    2. LAC

    3. OKC

    4. GS

    5. HOU

    6. MEM

    7. POR

    8. MIN

The 8th could also go to LAL for their last playoff gasp before being completely done.

    50-32

LAC, OKC, SAS, HOU, GSW, POR, MEM, DEN

If San Antonio shows their age FINALLY then we can potentially be the 5th seed. Higher or Lower if Injuries occur, of course.

I think we actually would have a chance of beating Spurs in the first round.

I maintain that we will come close in the division. San Antonio and OKC are still the guys to beat in the West. The Clips are right there now because of their improved bench and Doc Rivers who will certainly be the best part of the organization this year. The Warriors are the most improved and with Iggy will fight for that 4th spot and Houston will be next in line. I think we can get the 6 or 7th seed ahead of Memphis whose scoring will be a question now that they're older and haven't added a genuine scorer for their lineup. The 8th spot is up for grabs. Denver, Lakers or Minny will get it. Dallas will just miss out because their defense will be about as bad as we've seen in a while. Calderon and Ellis are good but can't defend for anything and guys like Westbrook, Parker and Curry will feast on them during the season.

I may be wrong, but Dallas could be trying a tank in order to win the race for Wiggins or Jabari Parker. If the lose Dirk in FA then Parker will certainly soften the blow.

Seeing the way that we handled the Spurs last year without a bench,i think we dominate this year. Three teams were problematic for us last year in the west, Clippers,Memphis  and OKC. I think we beat them this year. Beating the Clippers especially would be bittersweet for Olshey.

We did get a win in Memphis last year. More than anything I want us to sweep the Bulls and end all that rubbish talk of them taking LA from us for good. A winning record against the East and 10 division wins will get us a spot in the playoffs and might be good enough for a 6th seed. With Mo on the roster now we have enough firepower to take on anybody and compete for the 5th seed.

This team has potential as well as a ton of question marks. First, chemistry will be an issue and their are several new pieces to work into the equation. Rookie/ youth development will be another, can McCollum be a valuable contributor right away, is T-Rob improved over last year, did Lillard's defense improve much, and can Meyers Leonard actually play any defense?

This team will live and die from perimeter jumpers, how they react to the inevitable bad losses that will come from that style of play will say a lot about this team. Also health is a big issue for the team any significant injury to one of our starters and this so called deep team will not look anything like that.

    Wins projection 36-50.

you always got something bad to say about the blazers you just want to find a reason for us not to do good. you wanna trade Lamarcus so bad and tank for the 2014 draft, we dont have any draft picks and thats good we dont need anymore younger players, neil is building assets to make a bigger move. so stop doubting us !

HAHAHA. 36 to 50 wins. That's not far away from saying "I think they'll have between 0 and 82 wins..."

I really don't see chemistry being an issue. The only person who has been bumped down in his role is CJ, and he's a rookie so he can't really complain about that. None of the players seem pig headed. They all seem to WANT to be here. If adding an entire bench doesn't help us get more than 36 wins, I will start believing everything you post, meese. But why are you so afraid of getting excited for your own freaking team?

@ Mistafab322 & D_pickett, a HUGE I AGREE w/ u guys, as for cmeese47... NOT so much or even @ all!  The troll catches more heat (yet again)!  Yeah, cmeese47... r YOU SURE  u r a fan of OUR (sans u) Blazers?  YOU ARE a "fan" of criticizing & being NOT ONLY negative BUT OVERLY negative.  ANYTIME I've seen u b remotely positive, YOU almost always follow it up w/ lengthy negativity.  I know u think you're adding "something different" to the conversation(s) but your not; what u add is the SAME OLD BORING negativity that we've come to expect from u.  YOU don't disappoint w/ being disappointing.

I'm generally a positive person in life & on here BUT when I c u post something, w/o reading whatever it is, I ALREADY KNOW it's going to b something negative & THAT'S almost the only time on here when I become clearly negative. U or some1 else might say, "it's so boring to say so many nice things so often;" IF I'm in danger of that... I'll take THAT EVERYDAY of the week!  I'd rather players c thousands of positive comments v. a few negative 1's that r either founded or not.

There was nothing negative in my post. Does anyone believe that if LA misses say 8 weeks with an injury this team is anywhere close to a 50 win team.

The team is young so winning on the road will not be easy. Furthermore, when you factor in the larger number of road games to start the season this could be a real issue as McCollum, Robinson, and the team develops and roles and minutes are not yet clear. Considering half of the NBA playoff teams last year had losing records on the road this should not be a surprise. 16-25 is probably likely.

If the team stays healthy and Leonard, Robinson, and McCollum, Crabbe or Barton develop into quality bench pieces then the team should have a better chance of winning around 30 games at home.

That would put the team around 46-36 and likely a 7th seed in the playoffs. If Lillard or Batum or LA get hurt I could see that number dropping down to as low as 36 wins.

It's because we don't have LeBron. That's THE ONLY thing that will make cmeese happy. Go join a LeBron fan board and any time you're tempted to post something that you consider "realistic but not negative" about the Blazers on here, go post something on your LeBron site.

I'm all for you continuing to be a part of the discussion on these boards, but if the franchise goes in the direction you've been urging for years, don't post ridiculous unfounded claims like predicting 36 wins.

OF COURSE, injuries hurt a team. But look at Chicago last season. We actually have depth now, so quit inventing chemistry issues and sudden underperformance from veterans just to keep your devil's advocate role alive. You annoy Blazer fans... like 99.9% of Blazer fans. If you can't take a step back and realize that maybe you're in the wrong, I can't come close to understanding your ego.

Aww Yes D_pickett!! I totally agree with you. I have disliked cmeese's post for a while. It is like he is a Laker's fan that is trolling. Neil has assembled a full team to head into 2013-14. Even if one of our core guys go down with a bad injury we have depth. Our veterans on our bench have started for other teams.. If our bench is Mo, McCollum, Wright, TRob, and Leonard... are you really scared we will be a 36 win team next year!?!?? You live on another planet cmeese, and when ever I see you post, I skip your section and read the next person's thoughts. Every time I happen to read back over your words I am disappointed.

Every team had bad losses it is a fact. When you consider Portland's perimeter based style and relative inexperience the team is going to struggle some nights. Being able to bounce back from a bad loss or even a close game that went the wrong way will tell a lot about the make up of the team.

Yes we have some depth, I will not argue that point. If Lillard goes down for a few games, Williams is capable of running the team. We have plenty of people who can play SG, with Williams or Batum being able to fill in if Crabbe, Barton, or McCollum are not ready. SF would be a bigger loss but Matthews and Wright could fill in. However, if LA goes down the team is in bad shape, I like T-Rob but a significant injury to LA makes 36 wins a possibility and it would also demonstrate a lack of front court depth. Then again who knows maybe Leonard or Freeland would step up and dominate in LA's absence.

Hopefully the starters will put away bottom level teams early and sit out more 4th qtrs which will minimize the risk of injury to our best players. We now have a bench that won't bleed pts when Lillard and LA are on the bench. We also have a new fitness and training squad and from what I've read, these guys might rival the Suns in keeping guys healthy.

Lets say one of the worst case scenarios go down where LA and Lillard get struck with injuries (knock on wood), Our starting lineup would be Williams, Matthews, Batum, TRob, and Lopez. That is not a 50 win team, but it is a good defensive squad. As long as we can get rebounds and play good def, we can surprise teams with a depleted squad. Coming off the bench we can get additional offense, but not so much Def. We have McCollum, Crabbe, Barton, Wright, Claver, and Leonard. All of our second year players, by nature will improve somewhat from last year and see where they can fit in to help our team succeed. I don't think they will all be great off the bench but that is why depth is helpful. It pushes them to work hard and be the best they can be.
Playing Wright, Claver, or even Batum at the 4 for short periods will stretch out defense. When the other team reacts to it we can switch back in any combo of Trob, lopez and Leonard. As long as Stotts keeps the other team reacting to what we are doing we will have success.  IMO Watson and Freeland will have minimal impact this year. Best of all, is the fact that we do have all of these new trade worth assets. All the way down to spot 15 on our roster. I really think we will make a move at the trade deadline to bring in another impact player to go along with lillard and LA. I feel like it could be a talented big (PF/C). I know we have LA and TRob, but we can play small ball and throw one of them at C if needed if we get a PF, and also if one gets hurt it is never a bad thing to have multiple bigs. Some options on bigs we can get through trades are: Sulinger, R. Evans, Haywood, T. Zeller, D. Arthur, Ezeli, Motiejunas, Markieff Morris, and P. Patterson. These aren't all offensive impact players, but they can impact a game in one way or another (def, reb, and/or athletic). All i know is we will be better than last year and as long as we are progressing forward each year I have nothing to complain about. So I don't see where the negative opinions are coming from cmeese.

Yeah, by the trade deadline we'll know how the team is doing and where the obvious weaknesses are. I expect Barton, Claver, and/or Freeland to be moved at the deadline, but I don't know what will come back. The front office might decide our front court is the strongest part of our team (unlikely). For right now, I'm happy how we're coming into the season, and I have faith that Olshey will make the right moves if the team isn't performing the way we hoped.

I think that was a win estimate, meaning between 36 and 50 wins. That's why I thought it was amusing. It ranges from late-lottery team to about 5th or 6th seed depending on other teams' performances in the West. It's like a horoscope that says, "Something will make you smile today." It's not a big stretch.

I don't endulge in prediction much. But I just have to laugh at statements like "this team has potential as well as a ton of question marks", and was litterlly falling out of my chair laughing when "chemistry" is considered a "question mark". Another more selfless team in the NBA you won't find. These guys know their role. Mo knows he is a starter and has absolutely embraced being a mentor and 6th man in coming to Portland... over going to Miami for (laughing so hard I'm) crying out loud. There are no question marks regarding chemisty. They guys loved playing with each other last year, and the only real frustrations were the lack of wins and the lack of help (and the ever constant media drama fueling rumor and mouse clicks).

A legit center, a 6th man, a full bench of qualified and more experienced players, all ADDED and to think someone is giving Portland 3 wins over last season? It's just pure comedy at this point. Why not just predict 15 or 20 wins so there's something positive to talk about when they surpass that?

And what are these people even talking about "how they react to the inevitable bad losses". Did they even watch last season? Do they not attribute the words "never quit", or "resiliant" to this Blazer team? Are they even even talking about the Blazers anymore?

Lillard was thrown into a starting role last season and did ok for himself. McCollum doesn't even have to play and the combo of Lillard/Mo/Wes is significantly better than last season. He doesn't have to contribute right away. Do people even look at the roster before posting this stuff?

Injuries? "Any significant injury to one of our starters and this so called deep team will not look anything like that." I could not think of a more genaric and cleche' statement regarding any team. This is either an uninformed opinion, or one that was formed before last season and is simply being reposted. Portland added Mo, Wright, Lopez (started all 82 games), TReb, CJ. Who did they lose of any real value? Hickson?  Just... wow.

It's nice to see fellow Blazer fans openly rejecting this kind of non-stop non-sense.

If Lebron misses 8 weeks, the Heat won't get anywhere near 50 wins.  If LA lose Kobe for 8 weeks, the Lakers won't get anywhere near 50 wins.  If SA loses Parker for 8 weeks, the Spurs won't get anywhere near 50 wins.

Anyone find these statements a great contribution to the conversation?  Anyone see these statements as profound, original, or even accurate?  Value = zero.  Worse than a junk email, because I can't delete it.

I love the work ethic, character and talent level of the roster period. Stotts is now the X factor for making this team like two gloves with 10 fingers that can make things happen. One of the things I like about Stotts and Olshey is their calm, intelligent demeanor and communication skills. Some coaches are grating personality types that clash with stars...we don't have those problems. That's why this roster can grow into a winning machine. We have backup bigs going to big man camp, one who opted out of his national squad to compete for minutes in Portland. We have an up and coming star in Lillard who still is seeking to work with Wall and Payton to improve his defense but Mo Williams is going to be the guy who CJ, Dame, Will, Allen and company really learn the ropes from as well as Earl. Our sophmores came to work in June and so did Nico. Wes was at the practice facility shooting left hand shots with a bandage on his right hand. LaMarcus came to work last week. What's not to love about this roster? Robin Lopez may be looking at a career year and he worked out with Hakeem...it's a sign of success across the board! This team has a collectively high basketball IQ...TRobs will improve from working with LaMarcus. Lillard will practice against Williams, CJ will practice against Wes, TRob will practice against LaMarcus and Robin will practice against Meyers....that's going to push team forward.

We're going to be dangerous. No more giving up leads when the starters take a rest with Mo and D. Wright on the floor. Im still waiting for Crabbe to regain his shooting touch. At 6'6" his length will be a problem for smaller 2 guards.

I am a fan of our new roster playing with and for eachother.

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
