My first choice would be Bill Laimbeer. During his playing career nobody got an easy layup against him or easily boxed him out. He won a couple of WNBA championships as a headcoach. He's known as a top tier big man coach. We need an elite defensive coordinator. Some say Patrick Ewing is also one of those guys. He was on the bench when DHoward was racking up defensive player of the year awards and Marcin Gortat developed along side him in Orlando. Another guy who doesn't have a job but worked with the Olympics as a defensive coach is....now I know this will probably cause an uproar, Nate McMillan. Stranger things have happened and Nate is not really getting head coaching calls. He knows defense, loves the Blazers and Portland. Any other ideas? My first choice would be Laimbeer.

i like ewing he can develop leonard, and give terry some defense stragety, my next choice payton. he play defense, that was his focus his whole career. maybe if he sit on the bench, he can give damian better advice. my next choice would also be nate mcmillan,  i like him because he know how to coach through injuries and he love portland. i don't like bill because there is a huge different between nba and wnba.

Good luck getting Nate to return. He would make a great defensive coach though. Pat Ewing would be a great big man coach, not a defensive coach though. Avery Johnson would be a good defensive coach too.

I think we should make big changes. Hire Larry Brown, move Stotts to offensive coordinator and hire Ron Adams as a defensive coordinator.

Larry Brown from 9 years ago was incredible but since then he's quit on teams, gotten fired, sued teams, I think his best days a long gone. I like Stotts as the head coach and want an elite defensive coordinator. Who's Ron Adams?

Why don't we get Pop as head coach, and hire Phil Jackson as offensive co-ordinator, and hire Tom Thibodeau as defensive co-ordinator? Seriously though, Stotts should stay head coach. He has done a very good job, and stability is important. You can't keep changing coaches and players and expect to win.

I think Nate would be a good choice to bridge the gap we need to become a two way team but, I'm with common it would be a little bit of a tall task to bring him back especially with the head coaching vacancies around the league so I would look elsewhere.

Nate got turned down by the Bobcats and hasn't even been on the radar of bottom feeding teams as a head coach. Look at Jim O'Brien, Maurice Cheeks, etc..there are a lot of ex head coaches working as assistants. I'm intrigued by a Stotts - McMillan offense, defense tandem in a way. Nate also loves Portland, was basically a defensive coordinator for the Olympic team. It might be his calling. Just saying...it's an idea. Jay Triano on our bench was a head coach and come to think of it, Kaleb was as well. Nate's weakness was offensive creativity

Well if the Blazers can convince him in that role I wouldn't be opposed to it as long as he's has no say in the offense and stay in his lane if he can do that bring him back.

We all know defense wins championships. The later in the season goes and into the playoffs it goes, defense is the key.

The only protégé of Karl they as won a championship was Rick Carlisle, and guess what, defense is what won the Championship for them.

Lets all remember, Stotts has been mentored the George Karl school of offense. How many championships has Karl teams won? Zero. Stott’s worked for Carlisle in Dallas when they won their only championship. Look at what won it. There two primary offensive weapons were Dirk and Jason Terry. Then you have Kidd, Marion, and Chandler (all who knew how to play defense). Off the bench you had defensive JJ Barea and Haywood at center. DEFENSE won that Championship.

I was concerned when Paul Allen hired Stott’s because of his lack of defensive experience. Yes he helped them unleash the offense, but look at our season, the two glaring area's were Team Defense, and lack of bench. Every time I watch the Blazers on TV, most if not all commentators indicated we had the best starting five in basketball offensively. LMA, JJ, Damian not defensive specialists. Wes and Batum (at times) played good defense.

We were consistently out played in the paint, and defense did not win our games. When our starting five were on their offensive game, we won, opponents could not match up when at least three of our starters were hitting.

Nate would be a great D-Coordinator. Would his ego allow him to come back?

I do not see a championship on the Horizon until the following needs are met:

    TEAM DEFENSE

    BENCH

Yes we can play offense. But Team Defense sucks.

I like Stotts as a headcoach, he's smart, level headed and creative. He worked without a lot of options. You're absolutely right about defense Maniac. Tired starters have a hard time finishing games on defense without bench help on both sides. One thing about Nate, he doesn't buddy up to his players and will crack down in the locker room. Kaleb was not that kind of guy. That's why I think Nate would be a good assistant defensive coordinator. I think the combination of Stotts-McMillan would be pretty strong on both sides. I think team defense, bench and ball movement are all areas that need improvement. I'd have everybody watching the Spurs tapes. They put on a clinic. I also think Damian should remain a pt guard and not play much off the ball unless it's small ball time. Damian cannot defend the 2 spot.

I said on another thread a while back that we needed a defensive coordinator. At the time I could not for the life of me think of one who could work with our team. If we want a real defensive minded coach then that would be Stan van Gundy, but he is certainly not taking a job as an assistant.

So that leaves 2 realistic options in my mind. Good assistants don't always make good head coaches which is the case with Lawrence Frank and Kurt Rambis. Rambis is a good defensive minded coach and was a hard player with championship experience...

And Rambis brings the toughness that we will need if we want to be contenders. He's currently out of work so I think he'd be more than happy to get a chance to work with our young players and teach them the art of defense.

Frank would be my 2nd option at this point. If Jeff van Gundy was an option I would definitely consider it. He was a great defensive tutor and he got good results in NY when he was there.

I think Jeff Van Gundy likes his cushy job on TV, he's been approached by teams for awhile and declined everytime

Again I have to ask the question:

Would Nate McMillan and Jeff Van Gundy's ego allow them to take an Assistant position.

Rambis is probably or only logical choice or Lambeer.  All four are great upgrades from Kaleb.

God love Kaleb, his work ethich was incredible, and he had a thirst for learning, but he needs to be in a proven system like Dallas where they have proven coaches and a system that works for them.  My guess is probably that Stotts arranged this marriage with Dallas.

Nate Mcmillan was a defensive coordinator for the US Men's team. That was a part time gig and I think he would atleast consider the possibility of working in Portland again. He was a good defensive point guard in his days with Seattle and he would be a good tutor for Damian on a continuing basis.

I don't think egos and reputations will be an issue. If we throw enough $ his way, considering he was a very well paid coach before we sacked him, then he will give it some thought.

Rambis was a feisty player and won championships with the Lakers in the 80's so that will already be a plus n his CV. He is out of work currently and I think he would be the best fit. He had experience guarding both the perimeter and a little bit of work inside. Like I said before, he may not have been a great head coach, but he will be a really good defensive assistant.

i think rambis would not be a good coach, nate would be better since he can give useful advice to damian lillard. nate would love to learn some offensive stragety from stotts, if terry ever leave or got fired, we got other capable coach in nate

Well, I think either way I would like a different look among our staff. Nate was a great coach in his days at Portland and he genuinely does love the city and the team. But his history as our coach may threaten the command that Stotts has in the locker room.

Dont get me wrong, I would love for Nate to come back and help our team with their defensive coordination and schemes. But Rambis will bring a new perspective and a lot of championship experience. He knows what it takes to win and he will bring that across in his coaching. We need to be tough on the perimeter and dominant in the post. Changing shots and grabbing boards will need to become a point of emphasis.

So we got a different Nate. I honestly am a little skeptical because Tibbets doesn't have much nba experience, nor a reputation as for coaching defense. But he was great working with young talented players and I think he could do some great work with our young players.

And he worked with Stotts before, so their understanding is already somewhat there and will only serve to help us out.
