Cavs center Marreese Speights is expected to opt out of his contract at the end of the season. I don’t believe the Cavs will go out of their way to try to sign him in free agency. Here’s why. Anderson Varejao will be the starting center, flanked by Thompson at power forward, on next year’s team.

I like this kids game. If we lose out on JJ, this guy might be a nice piece to pick up.

I agree... if Hickson leaves Speights would be a good substitute...

He would fill Hicksons void completely

We can sign Speights to a 15 million deal over 3 years

Then sign Maynor, another center, and a bench guy

6'10" 255 lbs and he's 25 years old. Definitely young enough to blossom with our core four.

James Edward "J. J." Hickson Jr. is 6'9" 242 but plays way bigger than his size.

JJ is explosive. He needs to improve a bit defensively but he's better now than he was early in the season. I just watched him outplay Tim Duncan last game and being 7' doesn't necessarly mean you can run or jump better than a guy who's 6'9 (Charles Barkley, Dennis Rodman?) A big double double machine that runs the court and scores in the paint and rebounds at a high clip....where's the upgrade? He may be a PF but he's never had the success he's having with the Blazers in his career. At this point we could resign JJ and bring in a big cheap bench center for mismatches.

    no

Blazers should go after Anderson Varejao. He ws playing really good basketball before his injury this season. I think he would have ade the Eastern All-Stars. Decent defender, good passer, good hands around the rim. Can drive the basketball. His skillset was really flourishing this season.

I like Speights but we need a real defender and none of these guys fit that mold. Hibbert has not been great this year but his defense despite the huge tag would look pretty nice here now. Asik someone I touted and recommended going after would have looked even better especially with his friendly cap figure. JJ is nice for what he is but his terrible help defense is not championship worthy.

A poor man's LaMarcus Aldridge and another jumpshooting big.  If the Blazers are to build around LA, a much better compliment to his skill set must be found.  Re Varejao...he has less than a full season worth of games in that body and therefore couldn't possibly be added as part of the core of this team.

SIGN OJ MAYO TO 3 YEARS AND 7.5 MILLION DOLLARS EACH YEAR. THEN SIGN BLAIR AND WRIGHT TO 4 YEARS AND 2 MILLIONS EACH YEAR. THEN SIGN RUSS SMITH AND SOLOMON HILLS.

    PG-LILLARD/MAYNOR/SMITH

    SG/MATTHEWS/MAYO/BARTON

    SF-BATUM/HILL/CLAVER

    PF-ALDRIGGE/BLAIR/FREELAND

    C-LEONARD-WRIGHT/BLAIR

PERFECT STARTING 5, THEY WILL BE LIKE THE CLIPPERS WITH ENERGY.

2 UNITS PROVIDE REBOUNDING, SHOOTING, DEFENSE, PASSING WHICH MEAN OUR 2 UNITS WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST.

3RD UNITS WILL BASICIALLY PROVIDE 18 POINTS PER NIGHT IF YOU REALIZE EACH PLAYER

SO WHAT YOU THINK BLAZERS NATION WITH ONE OF THE BEST STARTING 5, BEST 2ND UNITS WITH 6TH MAN OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE, AND 3RD UNITS PROVIDE SOLID NUMBERS, ALSO WHO WANT LILLARD AND BATUM INJURES AGAIN NEXT YEAR, SO WHAT UP BLAZERSNATION

I am a fan of Damian Lilard leading us to a title and MVP to him, LA and MEYERS

1st try not to use caps lock next time...

2nd, Mayo, as Hickson will get a contract around 10m/per year...

3rd you would get 2 (Blair and Wright) other undersized centers to replace Hickson? Maybe 1 of them and a 7´ Center, experienced and good on D, that can teach some stuff to Leonard... that would make sense

4, IF Hickson leaves, something that isnt guaranted, we will target  7´Center to pair up with Aldridge for sure...

This is the best idea I have heard in a LONG time. If we don't resign JJ (For whatever crazy reason), Andy Varejao would be amazing. He was leading the league in rebounding, and getting a decent number of points before his injury.

I am a fan of Raymond Felton. Haha, seriously though I'm a fan of Batum's Lobs and JJ's Slams.

Varejao 5 years ago maybe, though the price tag would have been too great.  Varejao today may have a full season worth of healthy games left in that body for the entire remainder of his career.  PASS...

Varejao I think is 31 now. Coming off injury I"d pass.

I think Tristan Thompson would be a better fit. He's already a great rebounder, and he's JUST 22!

Nah uhhh a defensive center, a backup big either position I don''t care, an experienced wing, without having to give up any draft picks. I''d probably do this but I just don''t know for sure.

I completely agree he could be that voice on the court we need. Lamarcus just isn''t that guy and Damian can learn some on court leadership from him. A small lineup when we need a score bad of Dame, Wes, Paul, Nic, and Lamarcus would be potent.
