7:30 PM | Staples Center | Los Angeles, CA
Trail Blazers (25-29) At Lakers (25-29)

    What To Watch For

    Damian Lillard
Damian Lillard is looking to continue his Rookie of the Year campaign in Los Angeles against the Lakers. And if you recall, playing in L.A the first time around resulted in one of the worst performances of his young career. In a 104-87 loss back on December 28th, Lillard had just 11 points on 4-17 shooting, 4 assists, and 3 turnovers. Thinking back to that game, Lillard was out of rhythm from the beginning. The Lakers put not Steve Nash on him, but the lengthier Darius Morris and used Morris as a personal pressing machine the entire night, which worked to a tee. Look for Coach Stotts to adjust and find easier ways for Lillard to handle the ball, maybe even using Nicolas Batum as a primary ball-handler to bring it up the court.

    3-Point Shooting
We know the Trail Blazers are at their best when they are hitting from downtown, but two months again in Los Angeles, Portland just just 3-19 from deep. And a lot of that had to do with not getting quality looks. Normally, the Blazers will get their open looks in transition and off of double-teams, but Portland allowed the Lakers to shoot 46.5% from the field and gave up 52 rebounds which negates a lot of opportunities in the open-court. Not only that, but there's the Dwight Howard factor. L.A. doesn't need to double LA because they have Dwight Howard -- one of the best interior defenders in the game. This means the Blazers might now get as many 3's off as they usually do, but when they get open looks they need to make them count.

With the passing of Dr. Buss I think the Lakers found their motivation to put all the BS aside and just play ball so this game could go either way I wouldn't be surprised if we win this game since it's the Lakers but, it wouldn't shock me if we lose a close one, I just hope the bench gets some playing time these guys need to find out where they stand in this league so in the off season they can figure out what they need to work on how are they gonna improve with no consistent playing time I tired of seeing DNP with someone who could of possibly gave us something that night.

Lakers looked like a refreshed team against Boston. They ran the ball hard, got it inside, and found open shooters. Dwight even made a couple free throws! I know right? But seriousy, the Lakers found usage of a porous Boston defense. We're gonna have to get tough in the middle and make some stops. Go Blazers!

@CT...I don't believe Maynor is available for tonight's contest. There's blood in the water, Blazer blood, and the sharks are circling. Smell a feast tonight. Hope they enjoy it, may be their last meal in P'Town.

I saw play Leonard. Let him foul.. Or at least let him play rough like he likes to. No problem getting Dwight to the line, almost as good as a turnover. And if he doesn't foul, he'll at least b disruptive as an athletic 7 footer.

Its so unclear as to why a ref would blatantly ignore fouls by the lakers, including the last hit on damian. They ignore multiple fouls on us, yet called some fouls that didn't exist for the lakers! When will the NBA start fining the refs for sloppy work? Maybe they wouldn't do this if that happened. That 3 pointer was another big one, that was so blatant.

Great game by the good guys, terrible game by the refs. Blatantly horrible non calls particularly on Lillard and Aldridge...it's starting to get really old. If we got to the line as much as we should have we win this game by 10 pts easily

34 foul shots for the lakers, blazers 12, that is how the nba controls their product.

Im sure Kobe can afford to pay the refs for a few wins after all how could he say we Will make the playoffs if he wasnt sure of it

I am a fan of the NBA fining referee's for obvious stupid calls and HARD AGRESSIVE DEFENCE FROM START TO FINISH NOT WAITING TO DIG A 10-30 POINT HOLE

there are alot of words i want to use right now but i wont. I have not see a game reffed this bad in some time. I like basketball i think it takes so much skill to do what these guys do but i am disappointed at the over all league i honestly think they cant afford to not have lakers in playoffs thus is why they are letting calls go their way. Some may say that is taking to far but we already know there is corruption that has happen in the game

One missed call down the stretch of a close game?  Common and excusable with "human element" argument.  Two?  Far less common; far less excuable.  Three?  The blatant Howard slap across Wesley's arm, Nic's three, and Kobe's head shot on Dame...  Tim Donaghy-like.

Important to note the most significant damage done in cases like this reach far beyond the outcome of any one game.  If I'm a free agent and can go where I choose, why would I choose a small, rainy market where I'll routinely not get a fair shake, at times even possibly jeopardizing my health?  Possibly, but only if that small market over paid me.  Thank you David Stern for buiding such a fair league featuring parody and impartial officiating (cough cough)

ITS SOOO hard I live in LA (I'm in highschool, always get s*** for being a blazer fan) and my best friends are Laker and Thunder fans and just always garbage calls against top teams. What really got to me was when WMP hacked Nic's arm and the ref was literally starring at it and didn't say anything and after the review it was Laker ball. And I don't know if the shot was a three or not but I thought something was very interesting on NBA game time. They showed all of the excitement of the end of the game except for Nic's shot they just skipped past it to the free throws hmmm a coverup maybe.....

Whose going to fine these refs? Certainly not A David Stern run league, they're probably receiving bonuses... Although I'm a referee too and have made mistakes, their full time job is to get these calls right, and when you have access to the monitor for replay like they do and they STILL get the call wrong is frustrating.

There is a distinct possibility, imo, that this goes above the officials. When was the last time the Lakers weren't in the playoffs? (Crickets) How about the last time a team with a payroll double that of the cap and with the star power on paper the Lakers have? (Crickets) This assertion is not completely void of validity as we have seen precedent under Stern's leadership in the past (google Tim Donaghy). Remember, my word is "possibility".

I believe it was MB last night on the CCSN broadcast that pointed out that 2 of the 3 officials called Nic's shot a 3, but the third...the lead official reversed it, calling it a 2. As Mike said, this was important because it mandated conclusive evidence on the replay to then overturn.

I didnt expect the blazers to win this game, and I pride myself on being a no excuses type of fan and not a blazer apologist or homer like alot of people are for their teams, including some of the tv shows hosts here on the website. But lets be real, blazers had them in that game and the refs really, really made it obvious that the league wants to give the lakers a nice push to make the playoffs and draw some ratings. Its a insult to a basketball fan, if you live in LA as I do you have to deal with Lakers fans and my best friend is a Laker fan and he's one of those fans whose team NEVER does anything wrong. Though if you live in LA Sug81 and some of your friends are thunder fans I'd seriously Check them for being frontrunners, live in los angeles and just coincidently root for the western conferance champions from OKC. The problem here in los angeles is fans arent real. They turn on their team if they dont win. I remember back in 1998 when I was working at Jc penny and selling basketball jerseys, the most popular selling jerseys were Both Bulls and Utah. What a coincidence they were nba finalists in 1997 and 1998, people here are frontrunners and I would question anyone who is a thunder fan

Yeah haha all but one are he was a fan of the supersonics his whole life (known him forever) so I can't give him any but the rest OH YEAH! I have a laker fan friend who gets under my skin soooo much he is the worst, but I mean all laker fans are so... But if two of the refs said it was a three then that's honestly so frustrating maybe the ref system of having a lead official should be changed to majority rule. You could even add two more refs for more eyes or something but that'll never happen.

Its BS,what I hate is when lakers lose he tells me the officals robbed them or its a league conspricy, but then when the calls go the lakers way its like im full of bs to think blazers got robbed, laker fans are cry babies and spoiled and when their team loses they stop watching. Blazer fans are hardcore fans but whats your friend gonna do now that they are bringing the sonics back,Ill bet he sticks with OKC cause they are in first place.lol

Kobe dropping 40 on 65% shooting and missing 5 free throws has as much to do with this loss as the refs. Look at the Lakers shot chart almost everything inside do that you will get calls especially with superstar players.

Totally agree that mistakes happen.  How embarrassing is it though when you can look at video replay and realize you totally screwed up, and refuse to correct it?

Nash falling  because Lillard backed away from contact.

Jamison grabbing Leonards wrist on a rebound and stealing it from him.

No technical for a should to the face of Leonard by Howard.

Two technicals on Aldridge and Wes the second they said something about a missed call.

Wes hacked by howard on the elbow forcing the ball to fly in the air for a turnover, another missed call right infront of the baseline official.

Lillard run down on a late game 3 by kobe, and then nearly concussed on a last second 3.  Kobe literally just whacked Dame on the head.

With all the drives Lillard had, he was not given a single trip to the free throw line.

Steve Blake dribbling the ball twice, and they refs concluding that wasn't a change of possession.

Artest allowed to take 3 1/2 steps and given the basket and the foul.  Because traveling is allowed if you're fouled.

Laker player throwing the ball across the base line and well over the rim, catching his own pass, and not only not getting called for traveling, but given 2 points for a goal tend.

28 fouls in favor of the Fakers to 14 for Portland.  You cannot tell me that the NBA instructed the officials to get the Fakers into the playoffs.  The rules are different for cash cows.  Always have been, and always will be.  Shame.

I've mentioned this before but Cuban has a crew compile a DVD of bad calls after every game and send it to the league for review. He now gets better calls at Mavs games because refs know he holds them accountable. I hope the Blazers do the same as it must help and we are on the wrong side of the whistle far too often.
