From Chris Haynes - Pekovic Considers It A Compliment Blazers Could Be Interested

“That's really nice when you hear that other teams like Portland really want to bring you in,” Pekovic told CSNNW.com. “That means that I'm doing a good job and they like what I'm doing. That's something nice.”
“You never know. My first option is to stay here.” Pekovic said. “That's something that's really hard for me because there are people around me that are asking, 'What's going to happen this summer?'” Pekovic said. “This summer is going to be big for me. That's why I'm not really thinking about it and I'm just trying to focus on basketball.”
The Trail Blazers will have anywhere from $11.8 - $13.1 million in cap space this summer depending on a few variables and luring a quality big is a top priority. The Timberwolves are expected to match any offer sheet signed by Pekovic and he is aware of that.
Looks like this could be a Nicolas Batum situation all over again, just with the roles reveresed. Would you guys offer up big money for Pek?

    i would give him 8 to 10m

so that we can get a decent bench, and it would mean at least 3 new players, a PG, SG and an PF/C to replace JJ, if we dot keep him.

I would have him sign at midnight and force Minn to match.

Minnesota will match so as much as I like Pek, I think it ties up our money while marquis free agents get picked up elsewhere. We sort of just went through this with Hibbert.

^ I honestly don't see any "marquis" free agents to speak of, and the upcoming draft...at this point...looks weak.  "Don't get caught watching the paint dry"...

DHawes has a thread with a link to all the free agents and there are a lot of them, check it out. It's the unrestricted ones that interest me the most. Dwight Howard and Ray Allen are on the list along with Kevin Martin and JJ Redick. If we make a big offer to Pekovic just to drive his price up for Minni to match, we're going to lose out on a lot of them. Just my opinion and yeah BDawg, the draft is weak this year.

If we really want Pek, we'll have to MAX him out. I think that's the only way Minnesota would shy away from matching his contract. Is Pek a MAX player? No. But he's one of the best young centers in the league, which are hard to come by these days.

Hopefully Olshey is not so naive as to let that psycho Kahn bait him into tying up all our cash in a near or max offer to Pek.  It would be sublimely stupid to get tunnel vision on this guy and completely miss the boat on all the other pieces we need to make this team competitive.  Pek is the right guy, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.  There is no way we get Pek from Minny at a price that makes sense considering the status of our bench and the fact that we just took a center in the first round this season.  I agree the situation at center with JJ and Meyers is far from ideal.  But getting entangled in a run for Pek can only result in us getting Pek in a bad contract or missing the boat on UFA's that we desperately need to shore up our starting 5.

Well I don't think Minny will let him go however i would offer him a max. Here is why he is an above average center with time still to grow (and he looks like the bad guy off of superman). I agree we need a bench and if we can land a guy like JJ redrick and keep jj hickson i would love to do that. JJ can play out of postion again next year but i dont see us being able to sign both of them. And we need a big if i had to choose a center between Pec and JJ i choose Pec. Now with this being said Al jefferson is also free and could also be a good pick up.

Pekovic near max would be a disaster for this team. He is a good player but he is a 10 million a year player not more. Look for him to get a contract similar to what Deandre Jordan signed.

Lets just keep it simple Blazer nation. Denver has 3 7'0 centers. In the off season lets just steal Mosgov for like 3-5 million. Jefferson or Pekovic would eat up too much cap space.

I thought about Pekovic too, but Dwight Jaynes does not believe a trade will happen at the deadline, and I agree riverman, trying to pry him away from Minnesota would tie up the money and be another hibbert. But then again Olshey said that Hibbert was the top target. I actually believe Al Jefferson would be amazing, even if he ties up much of the cap. His high command in salary may shy away bidders anyway. I then say signing Marco Belinelli and Andray Blatche could bolster up the bench nicely. Pek's good but it seems unrealistic now

My 1st choice would b Pek (he's pretty young, a defensive force, CAN score when u need him to w/ GOOD efficiency, good character guy, etc.) but of course we all know/u guys have all made good pts as 2 why we can't/unlikely to get him.  Jefferson... IS a VERY real possibility 2 come here; if we gotta pay quite a bit 2 get him, it's ok bc he's actually worth (skills/contribuitions) big $ (if we don't pay him, some1 else will; I don't think any1 will offer him/afford a max contract but he'll get some good coin); if $ is to b tied up... this isn't the worst way to have it happen ;)  Jefferson's 28 right now; the longest contract he should get is a 3yr.

ps currently Al gets $15million/yr.; I don't think any1 will pay that or close to it; the most I c some1 paying is $13million.  LMA makes $13,500,00 & Nico makes $10,850,000, so Al would land between these 2 guys for $.  I say in the offseason when deals can b made, near the beginning (done @ this time I think shows a guy u really want him), make a $10million/yr. 3yr. deal. good for 1 week (I'm not sure if u can tell them the offer is only good for a week but if u can... DO IT & if he doesn't take it we can have the rest of the time to go after others with ~$11.8-$13.1million) to Jefferson & c what he says ;)

Another ps, sorry; wanted 2 clarify something:  I know $10million ISN'T between Nico & LMA's $; Jefferson's worth is between these 2 guys BUT I would pay Jefferson $10million/yr. to play for us; any more than that & I'll just have to say pass on him ;)

Jefferson plays no defense and is really slow besides being really expensive. He needs to be on a half court team and the Spurs are interested. Not the center I want next to LA in the post and he would wipe out our cap room for shoring up the bench. With our young team we need to run the floor.

I agree with riverman completely. Jefferson is a great offensive threat but he has never played defense in his life and also doesn't pass out of the block much.

The thing is, we are not a goo running team. No one really execls in the break on our team. Lillard is the best and he often takes fast break threes. Batum is ok too. But other than that we are a half court jump shooting team.

I wouldnt be upset if we brought in Al Jefferson. But I think a big defensive center would compliment Lamarcus better.

I think we should use our 13 million cap space like this

12 million 3 years for Randy Foye/NickYoung/ ShannonBrown

    18 million 3 years for Timofey Mozgov/SamuelDalembert/ZaZa

    9 million 3 years for Aaron Brooks/DarrenCollison/CjWatson

If Hickson will demand a huge contract then try to trade him for maybe a pick and a solid big man...or some good

    assets

All 3 of u guys have valid points & I agree w/ all of u ;)  The team needs a defensive stopper center that can occasionally score (IF the guy can't score @ all & is ONLY a defensive beast... I'd accept this if we had 2 ;)  I like bringing in Mozgov (I've said this b4 elsewhere ;)  From a practical, possible, & contribution perspective I think/have thought this is the best choice; paying him ~7million/yr. works for me; this allows enough $ (coupled w/ other actions) left over to boost the bench.

@ Siccolo, "I wouldn't be upset if we brought in Al Jefferson " also ;)  Al is a tempting addition w/ his pwr offense (if we didn't have Meyers, It'd b hard for me 2 consider Al; Meyers I think is our 5 of the future.  The low post threat that we would have in Al would get opposing bigs in foul trouble & draw defenders in so that our perimeter game would b opened up +, w/ another scoring threat starter, LMA & the other scoring starters can play fewer minutes) but Mozgov gives us what we sorely lack + flexibility w/ $ :)

ps I threw out $7million/yr. (NOW I realize this is a lil high for this guy even IF he's got potential ;) bc in the old days, u had to pay more to get bigs; I just looked @/reminded myself of contracts these days ;p  To help our cause in getting Mozgov, Asik makes $8,374,646/yr. & I don't c Mosgov (currently makes $3,140,429/yr.) ever becoming as good as Asik so... paying actually ~ $6million/yr. (the guy should b happy w/ a pay raise of ~2x's ;) is the max for him (he currently gets little burn & really hasn't proven much, he's pretty much potential-ish so his agent SHOULDN'T b able to get him $7million/yr. :)  Mozgov is actually looking more & more like the right choice!  Hahaha!

(my favourite are underlined )Mozgov can be a good option, such as Pachulia and Dalembert.

Supposing we dont resign JJ Hickson we should get the best of him, and we would also need another 1 or 2 PF/C, to our bench, Mareese Speights, Antwan Jamison, Elton Brand, Andray Blatche or Earl Clark

And then 2 more for our backcourt...

a backup PG like Will Bynum, Nate Robinson or Jarret Jack

and a backup SG such as Tony Allen , Marco Bellineli or Leandro Barbosa

Adding that to what we most likely will keep we would have a very strong team, 12 players, then with the rest of the money resign useful players like pavlovic and jeffries , get some cheap and effective players and a couple rookies... note: i think freeland is way to expensive for what he plays... so he could leave along with other expiring contracts and the non guaranted...

    PG: Lillard

    SG: Mathews/ Barton

    SF: Batum/Claver

    PF: Aldridge

    C: Leonard
