Trail Blazers (20-17) At Nuggets (23-16)

    What To Watch For

    Balanced Scoring
Over their last two losses, the Trail Blazers starters have not all been on the same page. Against Golden State, it was the Damian Lillard show. And on Sunday versus Oklahoma City, only LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum had anything working. With a bench not capable of producing consistent points, it's imperative the Blazers starters all have good-great games for them to win, especially against a dangerous team like the Nuggets. If all five first-unit Trail Blazers hit their averages, Portland will be just the third team to knock off Denver at home.

    Defend The Paint
Besides a meaningless Ty Lawson bucket with under a minute to go, the Nuggets went scoreless outside the paint when they last faced off against the Trail Blazers back on December 20th. That's right. Denver, at one point, shot 0-28 from outside the paint. It's to imagine the Nuggets doing that again. Regardless of their shooting woes, the game was still up for grabs as Portland allowed over 70 points in the paint. Without a true shot-blocker inside, the Blazers must find a way to keep Ty Lawson from penetrating and Andre Miller off the blocks. Another reason the Trail Blazers escaped with a 101-93 victory was the play of JJ Hickson who not only held his counterpart, Kenneth Faried, in check (6 points, 8 rebounds) but he had a monster 18 & 18 performance to lead Rip City to victory. If JJ can have the same type of night and the guards can play lockdown defense on the perimeter, chances of a win will increase.

An 0-28 outing from the Nuggets isnt probable. Especially at home. But we've got to be clicking on all cylinders to match the effort these guys display at home. Batum always plays well against these guys. Wilson Chandler is a guy i always said we should go after. He's got a real solid game which i hope he doesnt exhibit against us tonight. He's the reason Afflalo became expendable. I hope we see Lillard in a few post ups against the smaller Lawson too. Should be a pretty good game just the same.

I love playing the Nuggets.  Get to see Dre ball, and the two cats I wanted Portland to draft...Lawson and Faried.  Dame > Lawson, however, hindsight being 20/20.  As D mentioned in his opening, defending the paint will be key to having a shot in Denver.  Somebody must be assigned Faried's suitor and maintain his uni in their hands.  Manimal, with his activity level and effectiveness around the cup, coupled with Portland's notoriously absent post defense and late rotations spells disaster for our road warriors.  Keep a body on Faried and stay in front of Lawson and we'll have that shot.

This is the kind of team we are always going to struggle with. Their ability to penetrate forces us to rotate on defense and while we have improved in this area we still struggle playing solid team defense. We shot the ball very well tonight but we turned the ball over too much especially in the third quarter. We usually lose the fast break point battle and tonight was no different losing 22-7. Getting pounded in the turnover battle really hurt as the Nuggets managed 11 more shot attempts. This was a game we could have won considering our rebounding edge and nice shooting percentage but we turned the ball over and allowed dribble penetration at will.

Agree meese.  My keys were to keep a body on Faried and stay in front of Lawson...and as you said, rotations were again late.  This team struggles to defend in the post and deny dribble penetration.  Not a good combination.  In the Miamia game, Wes and Nic were far more effective defending the perimeter, taking the Heat out of their sets.  I just didn't see that same effort from those terrible two-some v Denver, particularly Wes.  Just one game, and a close, hard fought one at that.  Denver has never treated Portland well.  Just some of my observations.  Let's get CLE!

I just hope we start winning again soon or I think this team will start to unravel.

I dont think we've lost that winning feeling. I think we're hurting for a big man. Lawson got into the paint so many times last night i was seething. Hard fouls send a message. You cannot allow the littlest guy on the floor to constantly embarass your bigs. Someone has to step up and put these little guys on their back. Not a dirty flagrant foul, a hard foul. We need a BIG that puts other teams on notice that there will be no one coming in the paint. A Theo Ratliffe Marcus Camby type who just gets after blocks and boards. Where art thou Big Man ?

Dame too WAY too long to get into the final offensive set. With the game tied, he was walking the ball up the court with under 7 seconds to go. I just think had he hurried more, he could have gotten off a better look.
