Where will our bench scoring come from?

With Elliot out for a prolonged period of time, not only does that hurt our overall depth but takes away another up and coming scorer. In limited action last year, E-Will showed he was more than just a Human Highlight Reel. He was hitting 3's and scoring off the dribble. Really he was the only guard, outside of Lillard, who was able to create his own offense.

Without him, we will now rely on second-year point guard Nolan Smith, rookie(s) Will Barton, Joel Freeland, Victor Claver, Luke Babbitt, who is still 22 years old, and JJ Hickson. Outside of JJ, I just don't see much consistent scoring, especially from the wing and it could get real dicey this season if someone doesn't step up. We can't rely on the starters all playing 35+ minutes a night over the span of an 82 game season. Hickson aside, my money's on Luke to have a breakout year.

My fear with Babbit is that for every 3 he hits, he gives up 6 on defense. I think this is Barton's green light to be a scorer and hopefully Claver shows some promise. Nolan Smith is still a question mark to me when playing against real NBA competition. Hopefully Babbit and Smith prove me wrong. I think we're going to see alot of staggered rotations that keep scorers on the court. Batum is going to have to take over games offensively and JJ is going to have to show the explosive offense he showed at the end of last year. I think Batum and Mathews are the guys to have breakout seasons now. Hope for the best. Stotts has said repeatedly that he loves the 3 so I'm pretty sure he'll keep Babbit around. Barton is now the X factor off the bench.

I think our bench scoring will come mainly from three players. The first, and possible 6th man of the year, will be JJ. If he can duplicate the success we enjoyed at the end of last season then he will be a huge piece of our team. With us lacking a starting caliber center, I see JJ playing along side LA a lot this season. The second and probably the least expected contributor will be Will the thrill. I don't think he will quite average 10ppg, but I think he is going to surprise a lot of people. With Elliot going down, again, we definitely need him to step up. (On a side note, why is it that Elliot gets no criticism while Oden was crucified while enduring an eerily similar situation.) Lastly, I think a huge improvement will be had by Nolan. He and Lillard proved that they could play well together during summer league. I think that having two scoring combo guards in the backcourt together will put a lot of pressure on the opposing defense. Both have the ability to score, and to find the open man once they collapse the defense.

Foul weather: Williams isn't getting ripped as much as oden because he was not the first overall pick in a draft that includes one of the best of this era.

To the main topic, basically we have a pack of unproven guys, including 5 rookies this year. This roster is full of question marks with few answers, the only place we will get the answers is once games begin to be played.
This is a young and exciting team, they have two options. Either use their youth and band together and play well. Or use their youth as a crutch and an excuse and fall apart into the draft lottery for another year. Personally I hope it's the former

Depending on EWills future with the organization this season, we may take a look at one of the Greeks we got in the Felton trade. I read that they are both standout players in Europe.

I don't think that his draft position or the players selected around him make Oden any less a victim than Elliot. That's what I don't think people see. If Elliot doesn't pan out, oh well hes just another guy that didn't make it. Meanwhile Oden gets labeled the biggest bust in franchise history and is ran out of town. It just doesn't seem right. Also completely off topic, sorry, who else thinks we could have got Miami's 1st round pick for Oden instead of waiving him. That would have been Arnett Moultrie, Perry Jones III, or Festus Ezeli. A lot better than nothing.

All I know is that Fesenko is a big body at 7'1 280lbs. Not sure he would give us any scoring, but being a big guy getting rebounds and playing defense would be good since were weak there. To fix our bench problem I would
    Sign Fesenko
Try to sign either Barbosa, Pietrus, or Redd
Maybe try to trade for  Hamilton, or maybe some of Milwaukees many forwards (Udoh, Mbah, Sanders)

Just try to get some quality bench players! lol

Maybe we can sign someone nice to a 1 year contract and sign and trade him after season like Felton

I am more concerned with where this roster will get points from their STARTERS, on a CONSISTENT basis. The Blazers have been a jumpshooting team lacking jumpshooters. If JJ comes off the bench, there is no post threat. With DLill, one of the two glaring needs this team had, has been addressed...that being a player with the ability to create with the bounce. However, without a threat in the post and a player with the ability to collapse defenses, there will be a hand in the face with every shot. How many possessions can we expect Lillard to dominate with penetration? Still see a jumpshooting team, now with potentially a quality point. Better rebound and run, because the half court thing isn't going to happen.

@ Hawes...I'm glad it's YOUR money on Babbitt. Sign Barbosa.

    Lets look at the bench:
Nolan Smith- shot below 40% last year and looked terrible all year long then reworked his shot in the off-season and looked better in summer league but the level of competition is far below the regular season their especially defensively.
Luke Babbitt- can score a little but hurts the team pretty much everywhere else.
Price and Jeffries are here for defense so won't score much.
Claver and Pavlovic one of these players will likely not make the active roster and the other probably won't produce much
That leaves JJ and Freeland to carry the bench but one of them is likely to start.

Not much production to be found here.

I think Wes and Nic will be much more productive on offense under Stotts. Lillard, Aldridge, Batum, Mathews, Hickson, Barton and even Leonard are all capable of double digit scoring. It's defense that will give us an edge. Freeland, Pavlovich, Jeffries and Claver will have to step up. Babbit can have spurts of 3 pt finesse but he's a one trick pony. The team still has the ability to put pts on the board but Elliot could create in a crowd and that's a big loss. I hope Leonard becomes a second chance guy and a monster rebounder. He can make freethrows all day long.

What an awful start to the season.  I was so excited about seeing Williams get some playing time and providing some spark on a team that did a lot of spectating last season.  Hickson is going to have to be the guy to step in and fill that gap now.

This team needs to make some moves before the start of the season. I like the idea of Barbosa he would provide much needed experience.

I would like to sign barbosa or pietrus to play. I think picking up pietrus would be good especially because I think he could be a good starter at small forward, move batum to shooting guard, and see how putting wes as the sixth man would play out. He could add a much needed spark...

I feel so bad for E-Will :(  He's a good guy & I think he's gonna b a good player in this league (pretty sure I'm not alone here ;) but we now must make the best of our current situation.  Pietrus is a good person/WOULD fit w/ our team's chemistry BUT he can't give us enough of what we need to make a + difference.  Barbosa's shot is not as good as it once (only allow him to shoot when he ABSOLUTELY has a CLEAR advantage for a shot, i.e. beats his man to the cup for a layup or a WIDE open 3 when we have a lead & can afford a missed possession) was BUT given the pool of players that we could realistically get right now (w/o overpaying & being stuck w/ too long), he IS the best choice; as long as we use him more as a drive/slash & kick kind of a player (I know he was/is known for being a scorer & speedy guy, especially during the time that he was paired w/ Nash but for Barbosa to b of any use to us, he has to cool it w/ his poor fg%/shots & distribute more & b a leader on the floor w/ the 2nd unit).

Sorry, 4got to add this:  We'll need/have to lean on Nolan also for bench scoring/defense but it's Will & JJ that will carry the heaviest of loads for OUR Blazers; not only in these areas but also they'll also b the primary guys for keeping OUR Blazer's energy up & the opponents/their energy down!  :)

Opening night is going to be a good barometer for us to gage our squads mettle. Dwight wont be playing so that moves Pao Gasoft to the pivot. Id like to see L.A. move to the pivot in that game and JJ at the four. Batum or Wesley  on Kobe.

A bench is just a bench. I ain't worried about the bench. Some teams don't even have a bench. We got a bench, so we'll be fine there. I'm just worried about the team getting more then 5 assists per game, and shooting 10% from downtown every other game, like what happened to us last season.

Dwight should be ready for opening night, unfortunately. At least what I read is that he will miss training camp and possibly some preseason. The one downside that I see to signing Pietrus or Barbosa is that we are most likely not even making the playoffs this year. Those two are both in their 30's, so that's playing time that could go to the youngsters. Since we probably aren't going anywhere this season I think we should just test all of our pieces.

I think you can rebuild fast and get into the mix again... even this year.  This team will be more like the team that tested Dallas two years ago rather than the team that was put on the floor last year....  IMO we are much better even though we are young and a vet would strengthen our bench even more, however, Barbosa is likely joining Nash though so its kinda a moot.

I believer the bench scoring will come from the following people.  JJ Hickson, Meyers Leonard(if he doesnt start), Nolan Smith and Will Barton. If Hickson can contribute as he did at the end of the season then he will help considerably at the 4 and 5 position depending upon matchups.  Meyers Leonard will surprise people with his offensive ability.  I understand he has a nice mid range jumper and with his quickness should give some 5's trouble off the dribble. I believe he will contribute nicely on offense.  Nolan Smith showed a new aggressiveness in summer league before being injured.  If he can show that confidence and be that aggressive during the regular season he also  will contribute.  My surprise contributer will be Will Barton.  I believe he will surprise people with his offensive abilities.  He is slasher, aggressive on the drive and seems to be fearless going to the basket.  He also looked as if he has good court vision and awareness. He passed well in the summer league.  The one area I think that is overlooked is his 3 pt shooting ability.  I think he will surprise people with his 3 pt ability.  This of course is all speculation, but makes for an exciting expectation to see how all of this comes together.
