A lot of people are referring to this next draft class as pretty weak, I disagree though. There is a lot of talent in this draft especially at the SF.

Most of you are probably familiar with the likes of Cody Zeller, Nelrens Noel and Shabazz Muhammad and if you want to talk about them great but I wanted to throw out a few names people might not know much about.

    SF/PF Tony Mitchell North Texas
He is a very aggressive player that will not wow you on the offensive end but will produce. However, his biggest impact will come on the defensive end where his excellent defense, shot blocking and rebounding will serve him well at the next level. Most early mock drafts have him going in the middle of the first round, but he will end up a top ten pick barring injury. His game is a combination of Kawhi Leonard and Kenyon Martin.

    SF Andre Roberson Colorado
He is a solid defender who should continue to improve his in his junior season. He has a little bit of range on his jumper shooting 38% from distance and 51% overall last season. He is an absolute monster on the boards with 11.1 per game last season. He has a relentless motor and a good basketball IQ, which combined with his ability to jump out of the gym gives him a real chance to shine in the NBA next season. His game is a mix of Kenneth Faried and Andre Iguodala.

    SF Adonis Thomas Memphis
Another college player with an excellent motor who needs to improve his offensive skill set. Out of Mitchell and Roberson I think Thomas' offensive game needs the most work. His jumper is constantly rushed and off balance and while he has excellent size and strength especially for a sf he has not developed any post moves to help him take advantage in this area. He is a solid rebounder and defender who can also jump out the gym. Most often compared to Iguodala but I think that is a stretch consider the lack of passing and offensive moves. With his frame a more athletic Metta World Peace is probably a better comparison.

    SF/PF Doug McDermott Creighton
McDermott is exactly like Luke Babbitt only a better shooter. This kid shot over 60% last season while averaging over 22 points a game he also chipped in 8 rebounds. 48.6% from 3pt range on nearly 5 attempts per game. He will score at the next level but like Luke defense will be a major concern. He will be taken in the first round should he enter the draft since shooters always have a role in the NBA.

I agree with you and I think aside from whoever else is in the draft Cody, Nelrens, or Shabazz need to be wearing a Blazer uniform after the draft is over. With the look of our team I think it is possible without a single trade. We have no coach and no starting center. We need a coach with a wide open style for the team that has been assembled.

all of these players are great but i don't think small forwards and power forwards are on the blazers' bucket list for next year.. We're gonna be crazy deep at SF with Batum, Claver, Babbit and a possibly Barton! Needless to say we also have LA, Hickson and Freeland at the 4 next year. I know you weren't talking about adding them to the Blazers but i just had to let that out.

Also, I think this next year's draft will be significantly weaker than 12's. They just look a lot more talented than next year's class will be. The names you did mention are pretty good though and i think Muhammad will be the best one even though Zeller is projected top pick in some mock drafts. Great analysis!

I agree that right now SF is not a priority but if we make a deal next summer or we decide to take the best available player these guys could be an option. I like the first three because they are solid defenders and while we have Babbitt there is no need for McDermott I think he could easily play a similar role to Mehmet Okur and will likely have a nice impact for some team.

I have not seen much on Rudy Gobert but I hear good things about him and if we are going to keep Batum long term maybe it would be nice to add one of his fellow Frenchmen.

I think as the year plays out, the best player and possibly the top overall pick is going to be McAdoo of North Carolina.  Also Minnesota had one of the top players go down with an injury and he missed all year, Trevor Mbakwe.  He redshirted and decided to comeback, so he's now on his 6th year.  If he stays healthy, he's going to have a monster season.  Mike Moser and Le'Bryan Nash are 2 forwards who both could have gone pro, but stayed in school.

some guards I like are Ray McCallum Jr, Trey Burke's alright, Isaiah Canaan can shoot, but talking about incoming freshman, the next Magic Johnson could be 6-9 PG Kyle Anderson. I'm real excited to see the Pac 12 this year... UCLA and Arizona have 2 awesome recuiting classes...  not sure where they're ranked nationally but I have to believe they're both ahead of Kentucky.

I just hope that Anderson and Muhammad can work out in the same back court. Moser will likely be a lottery pick he has some skills. I see Anderson more as an Iguodala/ Odom Point-Forward in the NBA than an actual PG.

Shabazz is Kobe/ Harden like and he would be a major upgrade over any of our SG's maybe as early as his rookie year.

I do I think Craft with a little more offensive production is a lottery pick this year. He is the best on ball defender in college basketball.

I wanted to know what you guys thought of Tim Hardaway Jr. I think he will be a very good pro just like his dad and most sites have him going in the early second round.

Not as high on Muhammad as some.  He reminds me of Armon Johnson with length.  Left hand dominant with a tendency to look for his own too much.  Seems a bit undersized for an NBA 3 as well at 6'5.  Better suited at the 2 as a pro.  Like the attack mentality, but HAS to develop his right and his overall ballhandling.  Otherwise, he is likely to suffer the same fate Armon did.

...@ cmeese...agree with Jr.  Would like to see the young man shoot the rock a little bit better this year and make better decisions, particularly in transition.  Great thread!  Way to bring it.

Draft Shabuzz not Zeller because if we do then we will spoil Meyers career. I think if we make the playoff then the only way is to trade Wes for Shabuzz

Shabazz will likely go number 1 and their is no way in hell Matthews nets us a pick anywhere close to that. I do not mind moving him to make space but he will not net us Muhammad straight up.

I would offer Wes, 2nd rounder, and a draft right to Jon Diebler and maybe put in Luke since he will not be a star player for Shabuzz

I dont really follow college ball, but I have read some 2013 draft articles. Isn't Shabazz, Noel, and Zeller all top 5 prospects. How will the Blazers be able to get those draft picks?? Unless we conduct a trade with Bobcats, Washington, Kings, or Cleveland. I dont really think we have any assets that those teams would trade a first rounder to. Unless its Batum.

No one really wants Wes i would think. Since Waiters, Beal, got drafted. Sac also has many guards. I can see us getting a lottery pick but ......unless Shabazz and them will fall to the 11-14 range were we will be......

Well college ball and drafts arent in my ball park lol

Already traded the rights to Diebler and it would likely take Wes, our own lottery pick if we miss the playoffs and cash to get Muhammad assuming he does not go number 1.

You are right all of them are top 5 prospects and none are really likely without a trade unless we get lucky and win the lottery. Which is why we should be targeting someone like Tony Mitchell.

Negatory my friend.  I believe the Mitchell meese is referrencing plays for N Texas, plays the 3/4, and wears #13.  Like meese mentioned in his opener, the kid is aggressive, knows how to finish, and has some length.

Exactly BDawg the only problem is he went from 20 to top 5 in most mock drafts and he hasn't even played a game this year yet he is probably out of our picking range now.

Generally what they mean when they say a weak draft, it doesn't mean that there aren't good players to be had. It just means that there aren't that many. I feel like this was a really deep draft. Getting guys like Jeremy Lamb, Kendall Marshall and Jared Sullinger in the Mid-1st round is really rare. Those were all thought to be lottery picks and next year they would be. Will Barton would be a low lottery, at no least a 1st round, pick. Im not sure how good next years draft is, but I know this year it was really deep. I mean its not to often that teams like Miami and OKC get guys like Arnett Moultrie and Perry Jones III at the end of the 1st round.

For sure. You aren't getting a number 1 pick for anything short of the best player on your team.

That'd be him common. In that video, you can see the instincts, the timing, and the length. He gets off the floor well too. Love the aggression...so rare in todays game. His biggest issue in making the transition will almost certainly be the whistles.

Matthews should have a monster year. If we play our cards right and trade him to someone for a lottery pick prior to the draft then we have a chance at a top pick. Then package that pick with a player or 2nd round pick. Or make a trade with Houston they have massive picks and no brains.

The problem is now most picks are protected so if that lottery team did do well in the lottery they would make sure they keep their pick.

To me, he seems like a four-year guy all the way. He could be a nice pick-up down the road though as he has that one great skill (defense) that would allow him to stick around in the league for a long time.

A player to watch out for this year is UNC's James McAdoo. He reminds a lot of James Worthy with his ability to play the 3 and the 4. I'd love to be in position to pick him up if Shabazz is off the board.

I'm typically Pro-Draft, but this one looks super weak outside of the top 3-4 picks. Granted, I haven't seen any of the incoming freshmen play or how last year's freshmen have progressed. And our pick (top 12 protected) goes to the Bobcats this year as well. So, if we are hovering around 11-13, I hope we start to win down the stretch. We're going to have to let this pick go sooner or later so unless we're in position to get a top 5 pick, it might as well be this year's that Charlotte receives.
