What do we need to pick up in FA?

After last nights NBA Draft, we welcome aboard Damian Lillard, Meyers Leonard, and Will Barton. Assuming we re-sign Przybilla, Batum and Hickson, our roster is starting to shape up by position.

    PG - Lillard, Smith
    SG - Matthews, Williams
    SF - Batum, Babbit
    PF - Aldridge, Hickson
    C - Przybilla, Leonard

Now with the FA market about to open. Who are you hoping we grab to complete our roster? Who or what do you think we need to pick up to make our roster better? And do you think we should not re-sign any of the 3 on the list above? If not, who are your picks to replace them?

Personally, I want to see Joel back. Not only is he a good center to have despite his age. He won't cost the Blazers much money, and he is a great guy to have in the locker room, especially for the new Leonard.
I agree that Batum is a huge piece to our puzzle, and as long as the cost doesn't become too steep, I think you have to take him. But I think this is Batum's last chance to perform at the level that he is capable of. We see flashes of it every season. Now it's time for him to be that player night in and night out.
Last is Hickson, his energy and play style is great for the team, and he is a great back up at PF behind L.A. As long as we can satisfy him with enough minutes, I think we should re-sign him. But the last thing we need/want on this team is someone causing rifts on the roster because he wants more minutes over an All Star.

That leaves me with the FA. I know we have players over seas that we are thinking about finally bringing over to the NBA. I'd be happy to see Freeland come over to play for us, but I think we really only have 1 huge piece that we need to fill more than anything for FA. I would like to see a veteran PG signed to not only play off the bench, but to teach the young Lillard how to be an NBA PG. Lillard has skills in scoring no doubt, but we need him to become an efficient passer and decision maker. This is where a PG Vet comes in. I think it would help Lillard grow very quick. Also, I'm not sold on the idea of Smith picking up regular minutes as our PG off the bench. Even though he showed some promise last season, I'd feel more comfortable knowing that the person that's coming off the bench has a lot of NBA experience.
If I could pick any PG Vet to join us, I'd pick Andre Miller. He's smart and still playing very well for his age. He doesn't mind coming off the bench and is a great locker room presence. However I realize that Miller will more than likely end his long career in Denver, so he's out. No one would say they wouldn't want Nash to be their bench PG, but I can't see Nash wanting to play off the bench yet, maybe in a year or two, but not now. But if we have the chance to grab him, I still say go for it. Let Lillard have 1 year as a bench PG to learn under Nash, and then switch Lillard and Nash's rolls on the team. Lillard to start, Nash to come off bench. If Nash is too expensive, or not possible, maybe go for someone like Jason Kidd.

    What are your thoughts Portland??

If Batum, Pryz, and Hickson are all retained, the only big free agent I want is Nash.  He already said money is important in his decision, so I say pay him... Get him in here on a two year deal...  I realize that he is old and has back problems, but with a short term deal, it wouldn't cripple the franchise if he were to get hurt.  This addition plus having Lillard come off the bench as a scoring option would propel the Blazers to the 5th to 7th seed in the West.

Nash and Aldridge on a team that is filled with shooters, solid wing defenders, and now has two defensive centers.

The first thing we need to do is sign Scott Machado, Kevin Jones, and Tu Holloway then send them to Idaho.

Once that is done, then we need make a substantial offer to Nash ideally 2 year plus a team option at 8 per but more likely 10 million per.  It appears that Houston will keep Dragic and Indy will keep Hill, Deron is too much so Portland has no better option than Nash short term or long.

With Barton, E. Williams, and W. Matthews Portland seems set at SG but Portland should consider making Matthews available via trade if the right player is available.

Not drafting a SF leaves us with S. Williams, Babbitt and potentially Claver if Batum is not resigned that is Bobcats bad so Batum becomes a huge priority now. Even with Batum resigned Portland needs another SF, while Babbitt shot a nice 3 point percentage his defense was terrible. Giving up a .586 EFG% and an unbelievably bad 1.31 PPP. Portland would be wise to try and bring over Kirilenko from Europe.

With Aldridge and Thomas we have an okay start at PF we need to decide whether we are retaining Hickson or going after someone like Ilyasova. We can also try and get someone like Taj Gibson in trade. If all three of those fail signing someone like Kenyon Martin would not be a bad idea.

We have Leonard in place now but he is not ready to start in the NBA. We need to first decide what we are doing with Freeland. If we bring him over Leonard, Freeland and bringing back Pryzbilla should be enough. If not Portland would be wise to go after someone like Omer Asik or even Ian Mahinmi to give this position some depth.

If we want to develop our rookies I think it would be smart to sign Jason Kidd and Joel Pryzbilla to a vet. minimum contract. This way we get two smart, quality veterans to mentor our rookies for the future.

Not Rudy Fernandez i hope. Both those Lopez boys are scrubs. I do like the sound of Hibbert and Billups though.

@ Cmeese47: That's what I thought, but if he doesn't come over then insert Thomas for his locker room presence, or a cheap FA, etc.

@Commontongue: Yes Rudy, only because he knows our system, and we're a way dif. team, with more options for him. Not my pick, just a possibility I threw in there. I also agree that both Lopez's are scrubs, personally, I'd rather see Aaron Gray over either of them.

As would i, in regards to Gray. I still think we should throw some money at JaVale McGee and see if he bites. I think he would be a nice fit alongside LaMarcus. Two athletic bigs running the floor. Then we have Leonard and The Vanilla Gorilla as a third string.

Would love to see Portland go after Rudy Gay as another scoring option....wich is something we NEED. (i knows hes not a FA) I would defiantly try to find a replacement for Wes but that wouldnt be too high in our Priorities.
As centers i would like to go after Asik or Robin Lopez...a big defensive minded C. I doubt we can get Hibbert or Mcgee.
I might look at EGordan but he most likely staying in NOLA
If we get RudyG it might be time to part ways to Batum...even tho ive been a HUGE fan since he got drafted. Wonder if we can do a ssign and trade to Memphis lol...

Im justing looking at players that can put points on the board...play D..and good in the lockeroom

not sure where all this rudy gay talk is comming from, great player but the griz arnt resigning mayo which means they are going to keep Gay for sure. from olshey comments it looks like we are going to go after young starter quality players and a vet point guard. if nash ends up in toronto calderon could be had for cheap... for young starters i say we throw some money at one of the rfa centers ie hibert, b. lopez, mcgee or asik hopefully the first 3 if not a sg would probly be second on the list of upgrades, eric gordon would be awesome but i doubt NO lets him leave or posibly Mayo since he is a ufa

Assuming we sign Batum (safe assumption) and Shawne Williams picks up his player option, and all Blazers currently under contract stay healthy (need planets to align here) we need:

    A) Veteran (starting or mentoring) PG
    B) Back-up PF
    C) Starting C
    D) Back-up C

The question is, who do we chase for these positions?  My picks are the following (listed in order of preference), critique away and add your own below:

    A) PG--Steve Nash/Kyle Lowry/Jose Calderon
    B) J.J. Hickson/Joel Freeland
    C) Roy Hibbert/Brook Lopez
    D) Robin Lopez/Omer Asik/Joel Przybilla

    Thoughts?

Let me start with guys who won't be back:

    1) Kurt Thomas: he was a short term space holder in the front court. Good veteran leadership and some much needed nastiness on defense, but he's not even on the radar for FA deals.

    2) Craig Smith: another space filler. Rhino could hustle and scrap, but he's the kind of player that keeps Portland as a middle-of-the-road team. Gone.

    3) JJ Hickson: everyone loved what they saw from him, but his cap hold is bigger than Batum's, meaning he won't get the qualifying offer. Someone somewhere will offer him more than Portland, and he will be on his merry way.

    5) Raymond Felton: if there is life on another planet, even they know that the Felton experiment in Portland was a bust. He won't even get an offer.

    6) Johnny Flynn: he's the kind of kid you bring in for some pep in a losing season. But he really didn't show value to Portland moving forward, and he isn't worth using any cap space on.

    7) Jamal Crawford: just because I'm listing everyone, we all know his opting out marked the end of his time in Portland. No explanation needed.

    8) Hasheem Thabeet: in the same vein as Flynn, there's just not enough he adds to a rebuilding franchise that makes him worth eating up cap space.

I think it's pretty clear that a huge chunk of the budget has been allocated to re-signing Nic Batum. He will be back, and he will be promised a stable, starting role for good measure.

Joel is 50/50. He won't be the first center that the front office approaches. He might even be the last they approach. I really don't know what to expect here.

That leaves us with this roster (with some of our tweeners, I'm breaking it into G, F, C):

    G Damian Lillard
    G Wesley Matthews
    G Nolan Smith
    G Elliot Williams
    F Luke Babbitt
    F Nicolas Batum
    F Shawne Williams
    F/C LaMarcus Aldridge
    C Meyers Leonard
    C Joel Przybilla (possibly)

Knock down Brook Lopez's door. He's the offensive threat, rebounder, and defensive presence that we want Leonard to be, plus he's young enough to play for a while ahead of Meyers and pass the torch when the time comes. Brooklyn will be going ape for Dwight Howard while Dallas is going berserk for Deron Williams, and Lopez will come easier than expected. This also assumes that Przybilla will not be re-signed, and Freeland probably comes over from GB. Portland will have paid some serious money to both Batum and Lopez at this point, which will take Nash out of the equation. However, Jason Kidd is more comfortable with his age and dwindling role. He already has a ring and a few different teams on which he's played, so those hang-ups (that will certainly affect Nash's decision) are non-existent. Kidd already commands very little money, and he'll take a reasonable contract to come live out his days as a player/coach in Portland. I'm going to assume that either Will Barton or Jon Deibler will show enough in summer league or training camp to earn himself a position on the bench. That leaves the ever-present gap at backup 4. Hickson would've been ideal, but he's been snatched up for too much money. Ersan Ilyasova might require similar money, but he's a great way to back up LaMarcus with minimal drop-off, and he just might be a better piece long-term.

    2012-2013 Portland Trailblazers

    PG - Damian Lillard
    SG - Wesley Matthews
    SF - Nicolas Batum
    PF - LaMarcus Aldridge
    C - Brook Lopez
    6th Man - Jason Kidd
    7 - Meyers Leonard
    8 - Ersan Ilyasova
    9 - Luke Babbitt
    10 - Elliot Williams
    11 - Nolan Smith
    12 - Joel Freeland
    13 - Will Barton/Jon Deibler
    14 - Shawne Williams
    15 - Victor Claver/FA Rookie

there was really no reason to claim hickson off waivers, give him minutes and then decide he's too good/makes too much money to re-sign. i say olshey keeps him. after that all they need is a starting C and another pg. i agree with whoever said we should get jason kidd.

I agree, unholy. I think we should get Hickson back, but I don't think he's worth a 5.9 Million cap hold for his qualifying offer. I really think he should be our top free agent PF, but Olshey basically called him a low priority. And I think another team will snatch him up before Portland even gets to him on their to-do list.

Brook Lopez, plain and simple. We're one of only a handful that would be able to pay him. Then sign either Billups, Kidd or maybe Miller.
This way we get a mentor for Lillard and a great center that will continue to improve further, instead of just a point gaurd that will retire in 2 years.

No way in heaven or hell that Jason Kidd gets a starting role over Deron Williams. Maybe they will play for the same team, but you don't bring D. Will in as a bench guy.

It's looking like Hibbert... max deal offered and Indiana is small market... you neva know

    12 man roster
    Hibbert/Leonard
    LMA/ Freeland
    Batum/ Babbit / Claver
    Wesley/E WIll/ Barton
    Lillard/ NoSmith

The mid level fa point guards are pretty weak... and we need some insurance.. we might need to make a trade.. maybe an experience vet like Ridnour or that is used to coming off bench or someone like DJ Augustin who has some experience and would accept a role that supports Lillard.
