Seen a lot about PGs and Batum on here which is crucial, but don't forget the third position desperately needing to be filled: the vital center. There are a few options Portland has.

Draft Andre Drummond with our top first round pick. His strengths: He is extrmely quick and athletic for a 6'11" guy. Weaknesses: No offense whatsoever. I've talked to a few college basketball fanatics who watched him this last year and they laughed when I said he was being considered as a top ten pick this year. Its a huge risk. Should they take it?

Free Agent Route: Best Free Agents on the table:

    1) Roy Hibbert but I think hes untouchable at this point

    2) Brook Lopez - Restricted

    3) Chris Kaman - Unrestricted but overpayed

    4) Javale McGee - Restricted

    5) Spencer Hawes - Unrestricted

And it gets pretty sad in terms of talent after that...

Trade - a realistic one might I mention. I know its nice to dream of Dwight Howard but think about our front office - they arent gonna give up what Orlando would even start to listen to.

Centers that come to mind that arent untouchable (in alphabetical team order):

    - Joakim Noah, Bulls (tough but who knows what Chicago will do when they have an unsuccessful playoff run and they arent happy with Boozer, would LOVE a guy like Aldridge next year)

    - Anderson Varejao (low trade value, second round pick and cash?)

    - Greg Steisma, Celtics (its amazing how well Doc Rivers got this guy playing)

    - Tyson Chandler, Knicks (New York is a madhouse, need change but this would have to yield them a center)

    - Marcin Gortat, Suns (PHX might do anything if Nash leaves)

    - Nene, Wizards (wont be a good fit there, Washington needs every position)

Personally I think going for Brook Lopez, Varejao, or Nene are realistic and benefit the Blazers. They arent superstars but they get the job done in the paint much better than Camby or Pryzbilla did this last year.

So which route do the Blazers go? Is this the time to finally solve this problem thats been going on since June 2007?

Nice post although I am pretty sure Varejao would cost a lot more than a 2nd round pick. We need a great rebounder and shot blocker but I am not sure I see an affordable option available. I think we need to consider trading LA if he would bring a nice center and picks or pieces.

Greg Monroe, Demarcus Cousins, Al Jefferson, Derrick Favors are all options

Actually, Hibbert is touchable! they have a couple other free agents that they need to sign and might noot be able to get Hibbert! Honestly, you never know! if we can pull someting out of our butts, we could get him!

I'd like to get Kaman... Every other person on that list (minus Hawes) will command way too much money.  Kaman could probably be had at 6 to 8 million per year, while the others would be around 12 to 15 million per year.  I would not be opposed to signing him AND drafting Drummond if he is still available.  Center and Point Guard are a huge issue with this team and need to be the main focus of Free Agency and the Draft.

Jared Sullinger is 281 pounds and and that was after he was a pudgy 260 to start the season. The dude is a defensive liability and he doesn't seem to have the drive needed for NBA conditioning. Dude could easily balloon up like Antoine Walker or Shawn Kemp. If he doesn't his upside being the next Glen Davis. No thank you.

@zkelly, Hibbert is like Indiana's Batum but to an even greater scale. They can go out and get free agents and still match offers for Hibbert even if its over the salary cap. I dont see a way of getting him. What exactly were your ideas for getting him?

@mdmgrand, I honestly have feel Kaman will go for more than 8mil just because his name has been thrown around by so many teams. If he is that cheap and we havent acquired a better or equal player, then I would go for him yes. He wouldnt be the best mentor for Drummond as their body types and strengths are entirely different tho.

Look at Al Jefferson.  Utah has Kanter, Favors, and Millsap to build alround and Jefferson doesn't seem to fit in there.  They could sell him for cheap. I think the Blazers could look at a trade for him.

Yeah not stoked about any center at this point. The only center I would ever consider making a big trade for is Greg Monroe, but that is definately not happening. I do think we look at the draft here for a center. I agree with commontongue here that Drummond is our best option. Very athletic. He's got potential thorugh the roof but could be a giant risk, but, the best available. Unfortunately he could go before pick 6, which is the pick we will be around. The next best available center I think would be Zeller, but we can easily get him with the second lottery pick. He is surprisingly athletic and a good rebounder. Sullinger and Jones III aren't really centers, but one player could  be John Henson too, who could easily be moved to the 5. So if we can get Drummond and Lillard/Marshall at the point, those could be solid picks. Hopefully this offseason we can sign Dragic and even maybe Eric Gordon too.

Centers are a dying breed and all of the good, available ones are restricted, meaning if their teams' had any smarts, they'll match any and all offers. The best option, imo, is to draft Drummond and play him at the 5 or take a power forward in the draft or sign one via Free Agent (Ilyasova?) and go small with LA at the 5. Plus, I don't think Lopez or Hibbert is worth the MAX and that's the only type of offer it'll take to even get Indy of NJ to consider not matching.

Cousins is probably my fv Non-Blazer in the league right now and would do nearly anything to get him. He's a little crazy, but I think we could use that and his post moves are impressive for a 21 year-old. Pretty soon he'll pass Bynum as the 2nd best center in the league.

Drafting Andre Drummond here makes the most sense. But then again, its quite a gamble. But from the list, you have, i would want Anderson Varejao. I think, he will be a great pick up. Great rebounder, good defense, and can score, when called upon. Only problem is, Anderson is not going for a second. Ill try to dump felton on the cavs. Like DHawes22, said Cousins is a great center. But, we arent going to get him. Offer felton, a 2nd for Anderson. If thats a done deal, Blazers have filled up their center position really well.

We wont be able to trade Felton, his contract expires.  And we don't need Anderson if we have Drummond as we only need one post player because Hickson should be behind LA at the 4 and when JJ is at the 4 LA should play at the 5

I'm afraid that there isn't a quality center to be had in free agency. Realistically, we're not going to lure Hibbert away from Indiana. Kaman is not worth spending 10+ Million on (and he wouldn't be a good fit here anyway.) and anyone else besides these two we could get through the draft (at a smaller price.) We must face the facts that we must do a little rebuilding as we also retool. You can't trade away your two best rebounders and not expect to have gaping holes to fill. We must get a quality big who can rebound/play defense/set picks. That should be priority #1. A point guard #2. Role players #3. I'm sorry but Przybilla is a third option center(if that) on any other team in the league. If we can't get Drummond with the 6th or 7th pick then and only then go for someone through free agency. You have to consider the type of player that can compliment LA. It's dangerous to pick a center early but I don't think there is a better choice. Brook Lopez is a very good offensive center; but defense/rebounding, up-tempo style isn't his game. And he seems injury prone too. I'd rather have his brother being a back-up for us (which is an option.)
i believe going young at center is the way to go. And what about Thabeet? Was he given a chance to prove his worth?

True, Thabeet hasnt got a chance to prove his worth. Obviously, Memphis saw something him that led to them picking him with 2nd pick. He has the height, thats for sure. People are already calling him a bust, but he is pretty young. Maybe, he just needs time to grow. He was a 2x NABC Defensive Player of the Year. I wouldn't say put him as a starter. But, it wouldnt hurt giving him more court time.

Before the playoffs had started, I would have said Spencer Hawes would have been a nice complimentary piece to the puzzle, but after his showing against Chicago, his price on the open market is going to be far too much for my liking. Some team will get desperate and overpay.

To me the options are becoming more and more clear. Either we A) Draft Andre Drummond or B) Play LA at the 5.

On last night's Courtside, Mike Barrett threw out the name Joakim Noah as a possible target this summer. While I'd love Noah on this team, I think he's cost an arm and a leg. Not only would Chicago demand both of our lottery picks but we'd also have to throw in around $10 million in salary to make it work or eat $11 million of Noah's contract which could kill almost all cap space if we re-signed Batum. Also, I just don't see Noah being readily available. He's tailor-made for that Bulls team. Finally, Noah is a final piece to the puzzle not a starting block, which is what we need. We need a #1 option to play with Aldridge.

Anyway if you want to check out the interview:
