    March 30th, 2012
7:30 PM | Staples Center | Los Angeles, CA
Trail Blazers (24-27) At Clippers (29-21)

The Trail Blazers will be looking for consecutive wins for the first time since January 24 when they take on the Clippers for the fourth and final time of the 2011-12 season. To date, Los Angles has a 2-1 lead in the season series, winning 93-88 back on New Year's Day in L.A. and taking the most recent contest, a sluggish 74-71 win at the Rose Garden back on a February 16. Although, it should be pointed out, that during the last meeting, the Trail Blazers were without LaMarcus Aldridge and it was the third game in as many nights. But the Trail Blazers still let an 18-point third quarter lead slip through their fingers in the process. The lone Portland win was a 105-97 back and forth affair which marked the highlight of the Trail Blazers' season, record-wise. That win on January 10th had Rip City riding high as they were 7-2, the talk of the league and leaders of the Western Conference. Nearly three months later, Portland is struggling to stay afloat in the wacky Western Conference and has had quite a face lift in regards to the roster.

It's been an up and down season for the Clip-Show as well. After starting out 22-13, they proceeded to lose eight of their next 12 before winning three consecutive games heading into tonight's date with Portland. Over their last three wins, all at home, the Clippers have been the team most experts thought they would be, just obliterating foes by an average of 15 points per contest. Those opponents that fell victim to Lob City along the way were Memphis, Phoenix and New Orleans. After picking up the pieces at home, L.A. is now 18-8 on their homecourt while  the Trail Blazers' struggles away from the Rose City continue. Their 7-18 road record is second-worst in the West, behind only the Sacramento Kings. One team is hot, the other inconsistent. One team looks unbeatable at home, the other can't find their way away from home. It looks like the classic mismatch. On paper, this should be a sure-thing for the Clippers. But just as we saw last night with a depleted, eight-man Hornets squad heading into the Rose Garden on the second night of a back-to-back, you simply can't count any team out. Good thing they don't play games on paper.

For Portland to win, they need offense, offense, and more offense. When the Trail Blazers score over 100 points, they are 13-5 on the season. Unfortunately, they've only reached the century mark 18 times out of 51 games on the season and once in their last eight games (100-89 win at Chicago). We know LaMarcus is good for his usual 20-25 points but what the Trail Blazers need is for Wesley and Nic to join the party. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it seems like those three have very rarely been on the same page offensively this year. With Wallace gone, the onus is now on those three guys to lead the charge. Although Babbitt and Hickson have been surprises off the bench, Portland needs to see more and on a consistent basis before they can already chalk up points and with Jamal's recent struggles, the bench has been hit or miss lately. So along with our "big Three" scoring 60+ points combined, the bench needs to put up 25 or more points for Rip City to dethrone Lob City.

One last thought. Keep an eye on Luke Babbitt. He's been unconscious in the month of March, scorching the nets to the tune of 14-27 from downtown -- a .519 average. And the Clippers do not do a good job of defending the trifecta, allowing opposing teams to shoot .371 from behind the arc -- third worst in the entire NBA. While Babbitt is under contract for next season, this is still an extended trial for him to see if he'll see minutes in the fall. And the most important quality a shooter can have is consistency. Can Luke continue to shoot it over over the course of the final month? On the road, on the second night of a back-to-back...this will be a good indicator of just how far Babbitt has come in his progression.

I totally forgot, you can play hack-a-Clipper. Griffin and Jordan aren't talented at the stripe.

Does the NBA have it out for the TrailBlazers?  So many calls not called! and how did they not call that last foul on Mathews?  Another game won but lost on account of the ref.  just dumb.

Hey, folks pay for a ticket hoping to see a good game. That was a great game. Nothing to hang your head about Portland, go take it out on Minnesota.

    Post-Game Quotes:
Coach Kaleb Canales on J.J. Hickson-

“I thought J. J. [Hickson] was terrific.   We are excited to have him and we believe in him.  We have talked about the process with him, getting him more comfortable but we are excited about him going forward.”
    Jamal Crawford on the loss-
“They made timely plays and we didn’t.  This was a one point game and that is a game you wish you could get five more minutes on clock.”
J.J. Hickson on the last play-

“The play was drawn up for Jamal [Crawford] but Chris [Paul] took him out of it.  Wesley got the ball and took it to the basket and there was a tough no call.  So we have to get back in the gym and get back to work.”

It's hard to accept all these close games we have lost that we should have won. J.j. Was good tonight, but wish he made those two at the stripe. Looking forward to seeing him more the rest of this season.

How can a loss be a win win?  We gain better position in a lottery and we see continued improvement and consistent play in some of our new young talent.  NICE.

Im still furious about the referees today. Its getting out of control. All about the big stars and money. Our media doesn't even address it. We are getting robbed by the NBA on a nightly basis. I don't know how our players don't erupt on these officials. Im ready to give up on basketball. Games like last night truly make me sick. I can think of almost a dozen plays that were blatantly bad calls at the end of that game last night. The only foul on griffin they called was when he palmed hicksons face to elevate himself. Im tired of seeing our guys work so hard just to get screwed by officials. We played a great game, it was fun to watch. But as usual totally frustrating and inexcusable. This is not basketball. I could walk onto the floor with no officiating experience and call a better more fair game! Im fed up with this, its time we make a stand. That Portland is just as worthy at having a fair shot as anywhere else!

29 points from Portland's bench. That's a strong effort. We'd probably enjoy seeing more blocks. Clippers up 6 to 1 in that category. Send 'em packin' Portland, some of those opponent's shots are asking you for a one way airline ticket into the crowd.

i think it actually doesn't matter whether he starts or comes of the bench. all that matters is that he gets more than 30 minutes and finishes the game
