    March 23, 2012
7:30 PM | Staples Center | Los Angeles, CA
Trail Blazers (22-25) At Lakers (29-18)

The third and final meeting between the two bitter rivals takes place Friday night under the lights of Staples Center. As per usual in this series, each team held serve at home earlier this season with Portland winning 107-96 back on January 5th and the Lakers taking the infamous President's Day game, 103-92 in which Portland scored a dismal seven points in the first quarter. Before losing to the Jazz last Sunday, 103-99, Los Angeles had won 10 straight at home. Even with that loss, the Lakers are still owners of the West's best home record at 19-3. And we all know about Portland's season-long road woes. Currently, the stat book reads 7-17 away from Rip City -- fifth worst in the NBA.

Both teams will look different in this matchup. We all know Portland sent out Gerald Wallace, Marcus Camby and Chris Johnson and in return now has J.J. Hickson, Jonny Flynn, and Hasheem Thabeet on the roster. On the other side of things, gone is long time staple Derek Fisher and Luke Walton and some new blood has been inserted in the form of big man Jordan Hill and point guard Ramon Sessions. Besides shooting just 41% from the field in the loss in L.A., rebounding was the name of the game in Portland's defeat at the hands of the Evil Empire. In that contest, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum combined for 31 rebounds to lead the Lakers to a 51-37 advantage. And that was WITH Crash and Camby. This means Portland really needs their guards to help out Joel and LA on the glass. Against a similar frontcourt in Gasol and Randolph, the Trail Blazers contained the Grizzlies on the glass, only giving up three more rebounds, 41-38. It'll take that type of effort to stay in the game for the Men In Black.

Finally, it comes down to a balanced attack. Portland is a team that needs everyone to play well to win right now. Against Memphis Portland had five players score 13 or more points and never really fell into a lull on offense because there was always someone who had the hot hand. If the Trail Blazers can minimize L.A. under the boards, play with intensity on the defensive end of the court, and get good performances from more than just the usual suspects, then it could be a good night!

This season has been a case of which Blazer team was going to show up. Last night was a good example of everything good about our team. I would like to do that again tonight at the office supply warehouse. I get confused when we play there I am not sure if we are there to play Clippers,Lakers,Jack,or just pick up copy paper for Paul Allen

Love it Tobyus!  Operative word again tonight is PRIDE.  If the Blazers play with pride, they'll always be giving themselves a chance.  Would like to see more of Flynn and Smith, and am hoping Hicky gets time tonight and Hasheem gets his Tha-beet wet with the length this Laker team has.  Go Blazers!

Watch it Tobyus, there are die hard Blazers Fans who live California and I am one of them, and I would move back in a heartbeat but I am married to a beautiful woman who was born and raised here and her idea of relocation is a warmer climate.

I love everything Blazers; I love everything Winterhawks, Timbers, Oregon Ducks, Seahawks and Mariners.

I have loved the Blazers ever since they came into the league in 1970 and use to sit behind the basket when seats were $.25 a game.  I was there in 1977 sitting in section 72 Row F Seats 1 & 2 with my Dad when the Blazers won game 6 beating Philly to win the NBA Championship.  I defended them during the Jail Blazer era (which was not easy).  I caught so much ridicule and garbage when the Blazers collapsed in 2000 Western Conference Game 7 against the Lakers (I am still recovering from that one).  If I have the opportunity to see Portland play either of the LA Teams, I where the real LA Jersey and feel like the Giants Fan who got beat up at the Dodgers Game.

So my point is Tobyus, we are The Few, The Proud, The Blazers and the doors better be open for those of us who live in this Socialist State with Moon Beam Gerry Brown the idiot as Governor (oops, that is for another Blog) who want to move back.

    RIP CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Go Blazers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We played well tonight until the last 4 min. Hiskson looked pretty good, still can't figure why we quit going to Aldridge in the second half. Would have liked to see thabeet get some time since the lakers are huge in the middle. Nolan continues to impress me, all and all I think if we compete like we did tonight we can start winning some games.

You know, kenny, I couldn't figure out why we played with a small front court most of that game either. If desired, Blazers have the ability to be bigger than the Lakers if you play Thabeet and Przybilla together. We might be the only team in the NBA with that option. Does Thabeet just absolutely suck? Or has he just not found a place in the rotation?

Oh, and is anyone going to vote that Hickson didn't crack the rotation? How long have we needed a solid backup PF?

JJ looked good tonight. He should be the 3rd big in the rotation. Actually I'd look to start him instead of Joel. Great pick up.

All I can say is that for the first time in a very, very long time...I saw something very positive on the floor tonight. He played like he had been part of the team all year. It was exciting. Also, for the first time this year, I can say I am pleased with a loss. Why? We competed the whole way, we got to see another player blossom and we made alot of good decisions on the floor tonight against a top notch team. We could have had this one if we had made a few more buckets!!! Very proud of tonight's effort!!! Now...let's get them at home....

    peace out,
    daddy

ray is still getting in shape so he will play better in the second of b2b as the season goes on. i thought he fought though even on the defensive end of the floor best example is his ´fight against pau where he is yelling for help but does everything he can to stop pau himself
but i have one question why don't we play thabeet? i mean the lakers got 3 or 4 chances from time to time to make a basket and even if thabeet is not playing great as of right now but i think if you are 7'3 you can pull down some rebounds and alter bynums shots a little so why didn't he get any playing time?

Ray is definitely showing more consistency, he's rocking the drive-and-dish game, and his scoring is up (when he takes more shots; not many attempts from him last night). I'd say he's pretty well established himself as the starting PG.

I would agree about Hickson's rebounding, I wanted to see that as well. But, when you consider the type of hustle player he is, we could expect 3-rebound games and 10-rebound games out of him. He'll be kind of like Gerald Wallace in that sense: the hustle will always be a good thing, but it will fill up the stat sheet different ways every night.

First...Hickson.  Voted "No" and that I need to see more from JJ.  I need to see energy from him, and on a consistent basis, at BOTH ends of the floor.  As I said in a previous thread, I love the pick up...if for no other reason he "knows how to finish around the basket" as evidenced with the 6-9 shooting.

Secondly, and most importantly...Felton.  Absolute garbage.  If any of you have a DVR and/or any other means of watching this game again, I'd implore you to do so.  Count how many times Felton would bring the ball across mid court, make a meaningless perimeter pass, then STAND there (even sometimes slowly backing up toward mid court) while watching his man wisely dive into the paint for the double down on LA or whomever else may have been there.  He literally makes it a 4 on 5 and is the reason Aldridge suddenly went cold and became a non-factor after going into beast mode in the first half.  We need a facilitator running the point, and more importantly, a point guard that not only doesn't take away from this franchise's cornerstone, but rather contributes to his impactfullness.  Felton is garbage.

LaMarcus was a beast and showed glimpses of dominance in this game, shades of last season.  Very encouraged by what I saw from him in this game.  Batease again disappeared.

I voted no on JJ for the reason Bdawg said need to see more. That being said for a guy being picked up off of waivers he played better than 3 of our 5 starters ( I dont count Joel although his rebounding is starting to suck) after praising Mattews and Batum for yesterdays game they came out and played like they want to be cut and traded. Having a bad game happens but when the A team comes you have to bring your A game and they aint doing it. Hey Batum whining how you want a big contract. how about you put that little round thing in the circular hole on a CONSISTANT BASIS!!!!! only playing good against a sub 500 teams does not impress me. Draft day is coming and alot of real good 3's and 4's out there. 3-13,2-10,3-9 I guess that is consistant shooting if it happens every night. That and we got outrebounded BY 25 which basically adds up to all the shots our starters missed. Kobe was off last night I think he only had 14 points otherwise the score would have been 113 to 96.

I'm just going to point out the fundamental flaw that you can't actually see more out of Hickson unless he cracks the rotation...

Why are rebounds so difficult to predict their direction?
It seems to me that the rebounds could have salvaged the 4th quarter of this game.
The missed shot from the top of the key has to return directly in the oppsite direction.
A Blazer should have bee there to catch it.
