Trail Blazers Acquire Jonny Flynn, Hasheem Thabeet, And 2012 Second Round Draft Pick
The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired guard Jonny Flynn, center Hasheem Thabeet and a second round pick from Houston in exchange for center Marcus Camby, it was announced today. The second round pick is Minnesota’s selection, acquired by the Rockets in a trade last season.
“We’re looking forward to what Jonny and Thabeet can bring to our team at two positions we can use help at and we’ve added an additional asset with the second-round draft pick,” said Acting General Manager Chad Buchanan. “We appreciate Marcus’s contributions over the past three seasons and we wish him the best for the future.”
Flynn, 23, has career averages of 9.7 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists in three seasons with Minnesota and Houston. The sixth overall selection out of Syracuse in the 2009 NBA Draft, Flynn was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2010.
In 120 games over three seasons with Memphis and Houston, Thabeet, 25, has career averages of 2.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 10.7 minutes. A native of Tanzania, Thabeet was selected by Memphis with the second overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. At 7-3, he is the tallest player in the NBA.

If Portland was going to send Marcus camby away, the one place to do so was Houston, the place Marcus called home in the offseason. It was apparent Portland wasn't heading in the right direction and wanted to salvage something from Camby, whose contract was set to expire this July. In return, Portland gets two promising players in point guard, Jonny Flynn and center Hasheem Thabeet. While neither player has lived up to their lofty expectations out of college, both have team options on their deals at the end of the season. If Portland were to opt in on both of those options, Thabeet would be set to make $6.4 million in2013 and Flynn, 4.3 million.

Normally a second-round pick seems like a throw-in. But not this year. The draft is so talented that Portland could see a talent be there ripe for the picking with Houston's selection.

I went B on this one. 2 pieces and a pick for a 37-year-old center isn't too bad of a trade. I'm not completely thrilled about the pieces. Johnny Flynn isn't a bad PG, but I don't think he's even close to answering our problems. However, from a building standpoint... decent trade.

Let both expiring contracts go and save up for cap room.  No need to do anything else.

A if we let them go.
    D if we keep them.

I gave it a "B" grade for the draft pick but the pieces are broken, Thabeet does not look like he wants to play anymore, I hope it was just the situation in Texas. Flynn has a messed up hip, I hope he can recover to his old play style soon. LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DRAFT !!!

Solid B a draft pick and cap space if the young players don't work out this is a good opportunity to see what they can do, you never know they may give us something we need and if they don't let them walk. Here to New Beginnings.

An A...only bested by the NJ deal.  The two players coming back in this deal are not only expirings, but both are serviceable NOW and can and will be used to close out the rest of this season.  Thabeet will keep LA out of the 5 spot and my hope is that Flynn will get a long look at the point, splitting time with the rook, sending Felton down to the D League.  The second rounder is icing on this cake, and worth substantially more in this draft than would be in years past.  Most GMs around the league are saying that draftees 1-25 are likely future rotational players.  This is a DEEP draft, similar to 2003.

I ranked it an F - If the stats on flyn work out it may be ok, although I did not see min played in stats, I dont think it was worth trading Camby though, he and Wallace where are toughs in the paint... You will be missed Marcus

    This gets a B

Cap space and a 2nd round pick this year is is not a bad haul for a very expensive Camby.  I'm a huge Camby fan and always will be, but you had to see this coming.  In the the context of the rebuild, this trade makes sense.  Bonus points for sending Camby somewhere he's going to be happy.

It looks like a C to me. It could get better if the pick ends up being someone decent, but that's unlikely. Not many quality second rounders for a guy like Camby, who seems almost ageless and a very high quality defensive center.

Flynn and Thabeet are journeymen at best, D Leaguers at worst. It might be a way to just clear a lot of room and start over after the season. For that, they get a passing grade.

I like the NJ trade a lot. Getting rid of Wallace, who didn't seem to fit well in Portland, for a potential lottery pick is a nice bonus.

    I graded A.
Anything for Camby was good. Observing him this season showed me that it's probably his last season in NBA. He was clearly going down with his production on the floor.

I think the trade was an a- or b+ as I don't feel Camby will play but maybe 1 more season. He seemed to be having more trouble getting down the floor this year compared to last year, and there is still some very talented guys in the second round.  It is also a positive for Camby, as he would be in his home town and will get good support which he deserves.

Probably a mutual trade to clear cap space and get Camby closer to home. I di not grade it but I like it. Camby was flustered and getting long in the tooth and it showed. He was one of the few players whose career I watched in the NBA I liked him because he could guard Shaq. Take Care Marcus

Quit drafting 2nd round players and stashing them in Europe! We're gonna need PLAYERS. Real flesh and blood players next season. Not some kid that has to learn 5 different languanges in order to understand the referees.

Flynn isn't even as good as Felton, and I don't see Thabeet taking any time from Pryz and Okur.

okur is injured and wont be playing anytime soon flynn would be to bad coming off the bench next season behind nolan because i doubt felton will stay. thabeet can also sit on the bench imo why not keep the young guys

Both trades were good.  It got rid of two players that obviously were not happy here.  I like this far better than the rumored Crawford deals.  I for one, think having Crawford here is more valuable.  I am not terribly happy Felton is still here, but I have to hope he will take this chance to show what he's really made of now that he helped usher out the coach he didn't really like.  It's a new era coming in PDX and I hope that there is a plan in place to make sure this season was just a pebble in the windshield of success we all have been hoping for.

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
