Everyone knew that the Trail Blazers were going to try and address a lack of depth in the front court. The only question was who that player would be. As it turns out, that player is 16-year veteran forward/center Kurt Thomas, who has signed with the Trail Blazers as a free agent. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Last season with the Chicago Bulls, Thomas averaged 4.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in 52 games, 37 of those being starts. Thomas, known for his rugged defense and willingness to mix it up in the post, joins a Trail Blazers roster that could use both traits.

What are you thoughts on the move? To me, it seems feels Juwan Howard 2.0, which isn't a bad thing at all.

If I am remembering correctly, when the Bulls put Kurt Thomas in their starting lineup they had one of the best (if not the best) rated defenses in the NBA.
Not a flashy signing, but Portland couldn't sign a flashy guy this time around. Should be a solid signing.

Old, being the operative word.  Bring back Pryzbilla.  He knows how to play with the Blazers, he can bring it and is about a decade younger than Thomas.

I like Kurt Thomas he is a great defender and rebounder, in terms for our future though, I would've prefered to see a young guy signed such as Josh McRoberts. And I agree with some of the other comments we need height on this team because we lost Oden and Im scared Camby won't be able to take on as much game time as he did last year. I would've liked the blazers to pursue a bigger guy such as Spencer Hawes which philly picked up for a cheap deal, Or even Aaron Gray.

But my hope is Kurt will work hard, and give us similar results as Juwan Howard did.

Does anyone know the update on Troy Murphy? I know he didn't play well at all last year. But the guy has talent. I would not mind seeing him back up LA or Camby. Plus it spreads our floor more with his shooting ability.

Kurt Thomas has some serious post D, and if you've seen his baseline J, you'll understand why I'm not upset. I too was leaning toward a younger big in free agency, but now I'm thinking about the up-and-coming Chris Johnson and the possibility of having a healthy Oden later this year. Camby and Thomas as veteran mentors for these two... I see some potential. Also, kaemicha, Joel has had recurring knee injuries and is considering hanging it up this year. So an older, healthy center that wants to play is probably a better pick up than a younger, worn-out center whose heart isn't with the game. As much as I loved Pryzbilla, I'd rather see him chilling with his family than busting himself up for us.

Just what the Blazers needed, a guy with 10 games left in him. Good choice front office! Curt was good a decade ago.

You would be surprised how tough Thomas is. There was nothing wrong with Juwan Howard, come on now he'll will fit in. Trust LA, he wouldn't have brought him here. I don't think he wanted 2 years to sit on the bench. I think he will be a reliable backup 4 or 5. I like the acquisition.

We lose Roy and bring in this fossil. Thanks management. He's smart,he's tough, but is he going to last. This smells like another half-court offense brewing. Which means that we're going to corral our horses and keep them galloping as opposed to the sprinting.

I do not see how adding the oldest player in the league to our team helps.  He is not all that good or bad.  Also, with injury problems, I do not see how he helps us.  We need a guy like Jeff Pendergraph, who I know is not available.  But we still have one roster spot left, so cross your fingers, hoping they make a smart decision.

Maybe we can call up Sean Kemp and see if he is available? I mean is this the best we can do? short term fix? why didn't we go after Pendergraph? He knows the system and he dont have one foot in retirement and the other in a can of Ensure. Good thing we made a splash in free agency.

No one said we're done in FA. The front court needs solidity and he is well respected around the league. Chicago offered him a contract I think it's better for him here.

If we can get some of the things he did for SA or PHX here in Portland then we are all good. He has played in the tough western conference before and made great contributions on playoff teams.

I think everyone is expressing their feelings about Roy being gone, as hate on Kurt.. Seriously everyone calm down, and stop attacking the front office! They didn't amnesty roy (for the wrong reasons thus far), they brought in wallace and matthews, and they still have some good adds that we are unsure how they will produce as well like: Felton, Smith, and now thomas..
They signed Kurt for a VETERANS MINIMUM contract! That doesn't hurt us at all! It adds a "back up big" for a team plagued with injured bigs. With all the injuries we have had as a team, why are we angry about adding a veteran for soo cheap. Ya we could have got a slightly better and younger big player, but it would have cost money we are planning on using for something else.. None of us know what the front office is doing exactly.. but one way or another, now with Roy retiring it looks like we have a chance at either a good FA this year or next. It all depends on whether or not roy retires or is amnestied/retires. I think we still might have a shot at some great players with the MLE this year: Kirilenko, Crawford, Dalembert, Landry, Powe, Redd, Stevenson, Arenas, Humphries, and maybe Hamilton if the bulls don't get him.

ALSO keep in mind the players i stated aren't all worth a MLE, but they are FA i feel can help this team win one way or another
