People want a high energy low post banger for the backup PF position next year. I dont like Antonio McDyess because i dont think he fits our team. He is a good vet but he cant really be a banger anymore because his bad knees prevent him from being a threat down low. I like the idea of drafting Josh Heytvelt with one of our picks and then signing a low risk high reward player in Pops Mensah Bonsu. Just hear me out. I think that our second unit should run more next year because i think thats where they all excel. Bayless is a get to the rim player and Rudy can hit the 3 along with Outlaw. I think that with the high enegry of Pops and with his non stop attitude and agressiveness around the rim Greg would play very and get more chances to score. People are hating on Greg and saying that he is a bust but maybe its the style of offense that dosent fit him. Im not saying the Pops is our savior but i think if Nate would let the second team run more often that he would be more help than somebody like McDyess.

Although I agree about running I think your methods are a little off. The problem with running is that in order to run, you really have to play defense. It's hard to run off a made basket. You will notice a lot more running this coming season because their defense will be that much better. As far as Greg goes, he will be a LOT better because he will be able to put some consecutive games together after playing through training camp. Bayless will be better, Batum will be better, and Martel will be healthy. This will be a much better team from the start of the season. Not to say that they will start off as well because they aren't going to catch anyone by surprise, but they will be able to actually out play teams. This is going to be a GREAT team next year as is. If they do add a vet, it will be a retired one to cover for the absence Lucas has left while getting healthy (thoughts and prayers with him). I hear Brian Grant moved back.

i agree. I think that our second unit could still be a really fast paced unit. I think that you are right when you say that you cant run off a made basket. Why not move Batum to the second unit and start Martell or Travis. Batum is a good defender and would probably be able to score more being able to attack the basket rather than trying to shoot. Batum is a poor shooter so the fast paced style would be good for him to get to the basket. Pops is a good defensive guy too. He is a great athlete and maybe with a little coaching he could be our version of "Birdman". Brian Grant would be a great addition to our staff. A very classy guy and would help our bigs out alot.

I think the assumption is that Martel will be the starter. He was supposed to be this year until he got injured. Batum just fit better in the first unit than TO. Martel will undoubtedly be the starting SF and Batum will be the SF in the second unit moving Travis (if he's still here) to the PF spot in the second unit. It will be a much quicker second unit with a lot of blocks from behind starting fast breaks and steals from Batum and Rudy. Both teams will be fun to watch for sure.

Thanks for your comments. I have been on the Blazers Edge website and it seems that all they do is bash your ideas. I have asked them what they thought about Pops Mensah Bonsu and they say he is garbage. I was curious to know what you thought about having Pops play with our second unit in the fast paced offense. He isnt a good low post scorer but he is an athletic freak and can really sky for rebounds and put backs. On top of that he is a really good guy and is a fan favorite with whatever team he has a short stint with. I think we could have jerryd just run our seond team because of his style of offense. Our second unit would be Bayless, Rudy, Batum, Pops and Oden. With Travis probably either getting traded or having to split time with Batum i can see this team running and playing very well.

I personally haven't studied Pops much, but from the sound of it he is like a big version of Ruben Patterson. The problem with that is that if he isn't a good inside scorer and he isn't a great jump shooter, then his contributions on the offensive end of the floor are limited. Rebounding is as much about strength and position as it is athleticism so if he isn't stronger than the other back up PF then even his rebounding could be limited. I think the inection of Travis at that PF spot is more beneficial because it pulls the other PF away from the basket leaving inside rebeounds up to Greg with the mid range and long rebounds up to the collective Travis, Batum, Rudy, and Bayless. I think with the speed and athleticism of those guys we should be successful in that area but they will have to commit to it better this coming season. I really think they should save their capspace for the coming years. Again, they have several Max contract players coming up for FA in the next three years and you don't want to use it all up on Journeymen. Remember, the economic crunch is affecting the NBA too. Merchandise sales are down, ticket sales are down, and concessions sales are down. Granted we didn't see the ticket sales drop here in Portland, but they didn't see the merchandise sales of previous years because we are all watching our money. I think financially the team is best NOT making any FA moves this season other than extending the contracts of guys they want in the future. I think the biggest knock on Pops is that his limitations might out weigh Travis's limitations. Although they are different limitations, infact polar opposites, that second unit needs to have everyone be a scoring threat in order to be successful. Maybe not so much in a couple years, once Batum and Jerryd settle in on the offensive end, but atleast for another season you need all the scoring in that second unit that you can get.

I completely understand your points. I like Travis at the 3 also but that dosent mean we shouldnt get another big guy. Travis wont be able to play with the bigger true power forwards. Pops isnt going to cost us anything. He is a mid level player who will cost us a minimal contract but can bring excitment and energy to the second unit. He does lack the shooting to play a 4 but he uses power and energy to get his shots away. He is good defensively because he disrupts peoples shots with his defense. He runs the court well and for somebody nearly 7ft tall he is very fast and can jump extremely well. Even with him at the 4 it makes sense and would disrupt the other team just as much as Travis would. Yes Travis can shoot but he wouldnt have the inside game that Pops could bring. I think Pops could just tire there big man out and then maybe think about putting Travis in to take him off the dribble.

No, but what becomes an issue is playing time. That word has ruined many good teams. It has to be someone that could accept whatever their position is with this team. I can tell Travis and Rudy are already reaching their boiling point so we better know it is the right move before we even give it some considderation.
