Preview: Portland, Memphis Jockey For Sixth At Rose Garden
The Trail Blazers and Grizzlies split the first two games of the series as this final matchup should determine who sits where. Portland holds a one-game edge over Memphis in the standings, but a Grizzlies' victory would give them the tiebreaker and propel Memphis into sixth place in the Western Conference. A Memphis loss and Portland would have a 2.5 game advantage with one contest left on the docket.
It's the last home regular season game in the Rose Garden aka Fan Appreciation Night, and it couldn't carry any more implications. With Memphis defeating New Orleans last night, Portland now controls their own destiny for the #6 seed. Also, a Portland win assures them of a seed no lower than #7, but it won't be easy. Even without Rudy Gay, the Grizzlies are still 15-8 in their last 23 games without their star wing. Why? They're huge. The tandem of Gasol and Randolph allow Memphis to dominate the paint. Also, Memphis picked up Shane Battier at the deadline and the resurgence of O.J. Mayo have also offset the loss of Gay. The two teams haven't matched up with one another since the Grizzlies' 86-73 win back on December 13th. The Trail Blazers' took the first contest, 100-99, on November 16th. This will be the first and only time the Grizzlies will make a stop in the Rose City.

There is no recent news on Marcus Camby's status for tomorrow night's game, but reports were that he was practicing with the first unit today. A semi-healthy Marcus can help Aldridge battle down low with Gasol & Z-Bo. While Portland can match up with the Memphis bigs well, an area Portland should look to exploit is at the point guard. Andre Miller should be able to have his way down low against the much smaller and thinner Mike Conley. For Portland to continue their push for #6, they must stay competitive in the paint and look to work inside-out. Also, I'd love to see the team push the tempo much like they did against L.A. We had over 20 fast break points that night and Gerald Wallace told us exactly why we ran; to tire their big men out. Memphis has lumbering bigs as well, so one would think the same strategy would work. Run, run, run!

You said it yourself.  Run run run.  I look for Miller to have another good assist day.  He needs to lead the offense.

Anybody remember Z-bo running a fast break when he played for us?   Yeah niether do I lol, we can easily get him tired and attack the basket.  Gasol is quicker but he cant hold the paint alone against G-Dub and LMA

As many games have come and gone this year and been called "Must Wins", none fit that description quite as much as this Memphis game.  I completely agree that Dre is as much a key as is Aldridge in this one.  Tempo may determine winner.  Push, push, push...treat this Griz team no different than you would the Lakers.

The Hornets just dropped their game to Utah, meaning that they are now mathmatically out of the hunt for the 6th seed.  If Portland beats Memphis, the 6th seed is theirs.

Lol I'm not sure how badly we want sixth seed with LA dropping a half game behind Dallas.  Lakers have lost five in a row and play the Spurs tonight.  The standings are really going down to the wire.

I'd like to see Portland try and emulate what they did to LA last week but I dunno' if that'll happen.  I'm glad Camby is back but I got a feeling this game is going to be a battle.
